  Microquad
Last update:  06-16-2004

Submitted by Chris Brown

Until recently there has only been one really good 3D racing game to take advantage of the latest PalmOS devices, that was GTS Racing Challenge which I covered before. Now a newcomer to the handheld software market make their debut with Microquad.

Microquad actually bears more of a resemblance to a certain popular racing game, containing a plumber, than Astraware's racer.

Using a similar engine (no pun intended) to GTS, the in game graphics are all pre-rendered - giving Microquad a very clean and smooth look. As expected there is also sound to accompany the fast graphics, however as with all racing games I soon found myself playing an mp3 in the background to ease my ears from the drone of engines.

The game has a lot to offer. If you hide virtual grafitti on a hires+ Palm then you are automatically treated to a full landscape game which runs very nicely.

Something else which is nice is the control sytem. You have the choices of button control, which is totally configurable, or on screen. The on screen option gives you virtual controls overlaid on the game.

As with the previously mentioned, plumber inclusive game, Microquad comes armed to the teeth. By driving over arrows you recieve a speed boost, complete with flaming exhausts. By driving through boxes printed with a question mark you pick up goodies which can be activated at any time. These range from missiles to oil slicks. This coupled with the Bluetooth multiplayer mode makes for a mean two player game.

Microquad has already taken the PalmOS world by storm, it's easy to see why. This game is quality throughout. With better sound, maybe in-game music, it would be almost unbeatable in every way.

If there is one racing game to have for showing off the powerof the Palm at the moment - it is a close call between this and GTS Racing, if there is one for sheer playability - it's Microquad.
