  JAVOedge Portable Battery Charger Review

JAVOedge High Capacity Portable Battery Charger Complete Bundle Review

I recently was given the opportunity to test out the new JAVOedge 3400mAH Lithium-ion Portable Battery Charger Complete Bundle.  The first thing that I noticed about this kit was that everything about it is modular.  By modular I mean that you can mix and match many of the JAVOedge parts to build the kit that works best for you.

The Portable Battery Charger Complete Bundle kit includes the external battery, a wall and vehicle plug modules, a USB cable used to charge the external battery, a retractable USB power cable, and four interchangeable tips which connect the retractable USB cable to your gadgets.  The four included tips are for iPods with the Dock Connector, Palm devices that use the Athena MultiConnector (Treo 650 and later; Palm Tungsten T5 and later), the Sony PlayStation Portable, a Mini-USB adapter, and a nylon carry case.

The charger is really easy to use.  When you first take it out of the box you connect the wall adapter to the white USB cable and then connect that cable to the mini-USB port labeled “In” on the device.  A green LED will illuminate on the wall adapter and the status LED will turn red on the battery pack.  When the battery is fully charged, the status LED will change from red to green.

When you are ready to charge your gadget you plug the retractable USB cable into the rectangular USB A port labeled “Out”, attach the appropriate tip to the other end, and then connect the tip to the device in need of a charge.  To begin charging the device, press the status button on the external battery and the gadget will begin charging.  When the gadget has been charged the external battery will stop charging the attached device and the status LED will go off.

I tested the Portable Battery Charger with an Apple 30GB 5th Generation iPod and a 4GB iPod mini, a Sony Playstation Portable, and a Palm Treo 700p and a LifeDrive Mobile Manager.  During the last week, I was able to charge my 30GB iPod, PSP, and Treo 700p multiple times from a single charge of the battery pack.  During the week of testing, each device was used until it was below the 50% mark and then was charged back up to 100%.

Charging times varied by device and how depleted the device’s internal battery was.  You can charge your gadget while the battery pack is connected to the wall charger.  I can see this as being handy if you travel a lot and want to charge both a gadget and the battery pack over night.  You would simply connect both devices together, plug the battery pack into the wall adapter, and then press the button to start charging your gadget while you sleep.  The only negative is that the Complete Bundle kit only allows you to charge a single device at a time.  If you wanted to charge a cell phone and an iPod, you will need to bring an extra device charger with you.

1SRC Buying Advice

JAVOEdge sells the Portable Battery Charger in two bundled options: The Complete Bundle ($79 MSRP, $67 when purchased from the JAVOedge online store) and the Essentials Bundle ($50 MSRP).  If you already have some power accessories from JAVOedge, such as the wall to USB adapter ($14 MSRP), purchasing the Essentails Kit might be the right choice for you.  If you do not currently have a portable charging solution, the answer is clear; the Complete Bundle is for you.  The Complete Bundle gives you everything that you will need to charge your gadgets right out of the box.

The Portable Battery Charger’s compact and lightweight design means that you will be able to easily take it with you whenever and wherever you travel.  The roomy carry case is large enough to hold the battery and charging accessories and still provide enough free space to hold gadget sync cables, storage media, and ear buds (all sold separately).

Regardless of whether you are traveling for business or recreation, the JAVOedge High Capacity Portable Battery Charger Complete Bundle will keep your devices powered, your accessories organized, and you on the move.
