"Pending case study: Leather or Aluminum?" Choosing between two types of handheld cases can be a daunting task. Leather provides a classic design, but aluminum offers superior protection. To help us decide, Proporta offers us their Alu-Leather Case that promises style, form, and function not normally found in a single case.
HARDWARE:
The Proporta Alu-Leather Case (Book Type) used for this review is for the palmOne Tungsten E, currently having a retail price of USD 34.95. The Alu-Leather Case is also available for other handhelds.
According to Proporta, the Alu-Leather Case is a leather case that features a "Screen Saver" system that combines the classic styling of a traditional leather case with the rigid protection of aluminum. It has two internal SD/MMC card storage pockets, a secure magnetic clasp enclosure, elegant contrast overstitching, easy in-case access to PDA functions (sync port, IR port, stylus, & stereo output), and can be docked in a vehicle using the Proporta Magnetic Vehicle Docking Mount.
The package includes the leather case and a 2-piece removable belt clip system.
EVALUATI0N:
At first glance, the Proporta Alu-Leather Case may look similar to other leather cases. It features a black-colored leather skin that feels soft but also firm. The case is in book-type form factor, meaning the front cover is opened in a manner similar to opening a book. The contrast overstitching (white stitch on black leather) was indeed very nice, precisely sewn straight and tight, evidently a good sign that the case was of high-quality.
The most unique design of the case is revealed when you flip open the front cover - an aluminum plate is sandwiched inside, seen through a pre-cut window. This is the "Screen Saver" system feature, where the handheld touchscreen is not only protected by leather, but with a rigid aluminum shield.
At the middle part of the case, a stylus silo and handheld attachment are to be found. I believe that the silo is a nice touch, letting you carry an extra stylus in the case. Sliding the PDA into the attachment was a little tricky since the attachment was a little on the softer side, but when I did manage to slither it in place, it had a secure and positive lock.
The inside of the back cover has two SD/MMC card holders. This is most welcome feature for users who tend to carry multiple memory cards, probably separating storage for apps, audio files, and pictures. I found that the card holders held memory cards firmly, and you won't be worrying about lost cards. (Note: Only SD cards where fit-tested on the holders since I did not have access to MMC cards at the time.)
The included belt clip can be attached to the back of the case. This enables you to attach your handheld at your pants waist area, or anywhere you would like to clip your PDA to. The 2-piece belt clip is removable, so you can decide whenever you would like to make use of this feature.
The magnetic clasp enclosure is a welcome treat to past users of leather cases. It is trouble-free to open or close the belt loop, as opposed to the usual metal snaps that usually accompany leather cases.
Last but not least, the top and bottom areas of the handheld are straightforwardly accessible, letting you change memory cards, use the IR port, attach earphones, charge and sync the PDA while it is in the case.
CONCLUSION:
The Proporta Alu-Leather Case (Book Type) is an excellent handheld case that effectively blends the traditional styling of leather, the avant-garde protection of light but durable aluminum, and the versatility of extra functions such as memory & stylus holders.
Most probable target users for this product would be:
Users who want the classic styling of leather;
Users who want the protection of aluminum;
Users who carry multiple memory cards;
