| Take apart Zire 72 Wasted almost three hours just to unsuccesfully search a take apart guide for the Zire 72. Google has become the worst nightmare ever during the last few years, cause its almost impossible to find anything beside obvious things (where you wont need a search engine at all).
So could please someone here post a link with a take apart guide für the Zire 72. The Audio jack has some contact problems which cant be solved from outside. So thats why I try to take the Zire 72 apart. Its wasnt much of a prob (first the two torx screws at the bottom of the back side and then lifting the front side from the main body usin a plastic tool) til I reached the top of the device (the side notches were some prob too, but with the plastic tools the unplugged w/o usin too much force). The top of the device seems to have some real heavy folded notch or something like that. So could someone post here either a detailed take apart instruction or a link for such a detailed (!!!) instruction (not just "lift the front side away", cause thats the whole prob ).
Thx a lot in advance
ps : Really horrible. Not the smallest take apart instruction out there for the Zire 72 . As if there never was a battery prob with the Zire 72 . |

| Then, maybe, none exists. Take a deep breath, a set of good screwdrivers, a digital camera and try it yourself .
Just photograsph each step you make and dont brerak anything. Then you should be able to put it together without any spare parts lying on the bench... |

| Its too dangerous. The top edge of the front panel is really hard to take apart. I presume that there are either hidden screws or some notches which you could easily destroy by using too much force. So I need some take apart instruction. TIA |

| Disassembling the Zire 72 I am also looking for some GOOD disassembly instructions for the Zire 72. My charger jack is loose, and I need to get in there and repair it. (Presumably a bad solder joint?). I have been reading through your thread here. When you mentioned the Zire 71 instructions on PDAparts, I wondered if you actually read thorugh them like I did. I know the 2 units are different. But the Zire 71 instructions detailed some additional screws UNDERNEATH the label on the back. If you take your finger nail and fish around on the Zire 72 label, you will eventually find 2 indents. (BTW - the SN on the label is inked to it and WILL RUB OFF!! I learned that the hard way! So be careful near the SN and its bar code). One indent is round and definitley the right shape for a concealed screw. It is under the RH end of the SN barcode. The other indent is under the label below the camera lens, but it feels pretty rectangular. There may or may not be a screw there as well.
I haven't gotten brave and torn into this yet. I was hoping for some very descriptive instructions first. But I first disassembled my Tungsten T without any help, and many times afterward to clean the power switch. ( I use these in outdoor industrial environments, and the dust finds its way under the spring washers inside the contact switches. If you have never disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled the actual power switch on one of these, you are missing out on a real challenge! Microsurgery at its best!)
Anyway, I'm betting there is at least 1 screw under the label, and maybe 2. If I can't find some instructions on the web within the next half hour or so, I'm going to dive in and see what I can find out. Your description of the plastic snap latches paint a familiar scenario in most electronics disassembly. I call them "snap together / explode apart" cases, because that is usually what happens as you force them open, often to the gut-wrenching sound of what you think is every latch breaking off. But often times they do not break. If they do, you can sometimes do without one here and there. Or, you can get micro-precise with some super glue and fix them (providing the piece that went flying can be found).
If any of you run across some decent instructions, please email them to me at repairs@adelphia.net. Good luck!
PS - I am new here. Can anyone tell me why the word "electronics" above ended up as a link to ebay? That was certainly not my intention!

| Zire 72 Hidden Screws My presumption was correct. In my previous post I described the possible locations of 2 hidden screws under the label on the back of the Zire 72. The round indentation in the label only covers a mold mark in the case. There is no need to cut the label open over this depression, located near the RH end of the SN barcode.
The rectangular depression under the label covers a small Philips head screw that retains the mesh cover on the camera.
This Philips screw must be removed to get the case apart. It will reveal 2 more Philips screws under the perforated screen covering the camera.

| I have successfully disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled my Zire 72, and restored its data. I posted a new thread detailing the Zire 72 Disassembly.

#9 | | Guest | Help! I'm trying to replace the battery on my zire 72 but I can't open the freaking thing! I called Palm support but they won't tell me anything because I bought it off of ebay. They told me to send it into them, but I don't want to wait and I don't want to spend that money! Could some body give me detailed description on how to open the zire 72 and the name of the tools needed to do so? Thanks! | |
