The HTC-Universal that HTC recently reveled to the world, is the first to use WM5.0, also the first 3G dual mode PPC phone. It will go under the name of "VPA IV" from Vodafone in Europe, and as "SPV 3G" from Orange, and is scheduled to be avaliable in the summer of 2005.
The goal of the HTC-Universal's development is to "put a home computer into your pocket, and become the best personal business/entertainment platform". With the strong support of Microsoft's software/hardware platform, the HTC-universal instantly catched everybody's eye with it's solid performance. Eprice(the reporting site) felt everybody's anticipation, and posted some exclusive photos in advance, to let every PPC junky have a sneek preview of this highly featured and Bill Gates endorced 3G PPC phone!
A Black PPC monster, bigger size, upgraded features
The HTC-Universal is a little bigger then it's sibling Dopod 818(also known as the MDA Compact), and also a quarter heavier. Different from the white model previously showed in Europe, this time we see a whole new "foggy-black" look. The simple and cool black casing gives it a better feel, the hidden antenna also makes the overall design seem more smooth and mature.
The HTC-Universal has a speaker on each of it's sides, can produce a stereo audio effect when playing multimedia; it also has a convenent cammera/shutter button, allowing you to quickly enter cammera mode without openning the phone. On the left side, there's also dial/hang buttons for fast voice function controls. Next to it is a mini USB port for convenently connecting devices, the reset button vital to PPCs and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The HTC-Universal supports WIFI IEEE 802.11b, bluetooth and inferred communication functions; the power button is located on the top, next to the memory card slot. It has 96MB ROM, 128MB RAM and supports SD/MMC card expansion; the company hasn't reveled the largest memory card size it can support.
Huge VGA TFT screen, fast and accurate keybord input
Here comes the best part! The HTC-Universal comes with a 65000 colored 640*480 pixels VGA TFT screen. The astonding screen of nearly 4 taiwaness-inches shows info in great detail, alowing you to view full web pages without cutoff parts. The full keyboard layout lets you type faster wither you're editing documents or inputing text. There's also dedicated dial, browser and email buttons to let the user access all sorts of functions faster, highly optimizing work efficincy.
180 degress swival screen
Not only does it has a big screen, the HTC-Universal also catched on the latest swival trend; it's screen can be folded, and also turn 180 degress. Add on the keyboard below, and it becames a highly featured mini-notebook. Turn the big screen again, and the HTC-Universal instantly becames a movie showing, music playing personal theatere.
Touch screen
Maybe they heard everybody's wish, the HTC-Universal, under notebook mode, can be controled by both the touch screen and the keyboard, all at the same time. With both the convenence of screen tapping and the rapid speed of keyboard input, the handling of the HTC-Universal can be considered to be great for any occation.
Double cameras on the front and the back; there's no problem video chat and self-picture taking
On the back of the HTC-Universal there's a mainstreem 1.23mega pixel CMOS camera built-in, it can take photos and videos. The white frame of the lens on a all-black body seems very special; a useful light is also added to solve the embarressing moments of taking photos in the dark. The Microsoft logo under the lens shows everybody that it is indeed a Pocket PC phone.
A 5 way D-pad is located on the right side of the screen, alowing the user to easily control it single handedly without the stylus. Right under that, there's a QVGA 0.3mega pixel secondary camera, which can that photos of up to 640*480 pixels; be it video conferances, video phone or taking a picture of your self, it's very handy.
Open the main camera on the back, just the feeling of using such a large screen to capture is very satisfying! Not only is framing convenent, the HTC-Universal also has a good screen refresh rate, there won't be any on screen artifacts when taking pictures of moving objects. Switching to the secondary camera, the QVGA view on the screen is acceptably clear, enough for video conferances. All related functions such as picture size, light, digital zoom and exposure settings can be set by a screen tap, pretty simple.
Not confortable until said...
The HTC-Universal can almost be considered today's new standerd of PPCs: WM5.0, VGA swival touch screen, keyboard input, WCDMA dual network support, bluetooth, WIFI, double camera, it can almost fulfill all your mobile needs. Just give it a price that's not too expensive and it should sell like hotcakes. To really pick a bad part, the HTC-Universal is too big, on first sight you'd think it's a color screen electronic translator(or e-dictionaries, which are the best selling devices in Taiwan after phones). If you really want to use it to make a call, it would be better to get a bluetooth headset.

I guess the rest is clear enough from the original site:

Boy, so this is the ultimate "bag of features". It must've cost a fortune. Although I wish it runs on Cobalt, WM5.0 sure's a looker. Garnet works great but look sooooo "90's" without skinUI. Palm should get a better looking GUI.
