| it depends. what's the framerate? if it's 15 fps, or higher than 24 fps, then it is going to look choppy. 15 fps is very choppy despite smooth playback. Anything above 24 fps will just end up in lagged playback, like it will actually jump a few seconds every now and then.

Which program did you use for encoding?
I am using PocketDivX Encoder ( http://divx.ppccool.com/) and it works well on my NX60. PocketDivX Encoder can either create an AVI or OGM file. I 've always used AVI and had no problems. TCPMP tells me that it plays at approx. 17 to 18 fps. That's not the original framerate of 25 fps, but still viewable w/o being choppy. |

| You should definitely encode at a lower bitrate. Framerate is not so much of an issue, kee p it ~25 and you should be fine. However, you should be looking at more like 300, 400 kb.s-1 for smooth playback - which looks fine even at full res. (As well ensure video is encoded at 480x320 or lower.) |

Hey Treffmeister,
I've encoded at at a bitrate of 360kb/s using 480x320 resolution, 2-pass encoding, VHQ and mono sound (22.1KHz) this time. TCPMP tells me now that I have a frame rate of nearly 20fps. Not bad... I'll keep trying out different settings...
Another issue: Do you have any idea why PocketDivX Encoder does not encode a DVD movie directly from DVD when using AnyDVD? AnyDVD should remove CSS protection, but PocketDivX Encoder still does not encode it.
Question Too bad... Would be cool to encode a complete movie.. |

| Fair Use Wizard can make an avi from the DVD, then you can use pocket Divx encoder to make a smaller handheld copy. Two steps and double the encoding which sucks, but it works.

| PocketDivX Encoder can only encode movie files, not VOBs. I think it can only encode MPG1/2, AVI, MOV, and OGM. It was designed for re-encoding video files to fit on a SD/MS/CF card, not to rip DVDs.

| Actaully I have just finished ripping an un-encrypted DVD with Pocket Divx Encoder, and it worked great. I had to make sure the screen ratio was properly proportioned but it worked flawlessly from a de-crypted DVD ISO image (made ISO image with DVD Decrypter) mounted through a virtual disc drive (daemon tools). Just select the VOB file for the video you want to convert and it converts it the same as any other MPEG/AVI file. I noticed that the file select dialog box for the video to convert only lists the first VOB for multi-part VOB videos, which most any commercial DVD movie is formatted to have VOB files no larger than 1048574 KB resulting in multi-part VOB videos.
VIDEO_TS folder example:
VTS_01_PGC_01_1.VOB 1048574 KB (first part of the main feature, the movie)
VTS_01_PGC_01_2.VOB 1048574 KB
VTS_01_PGC_01_3.VOB 1048574 KB
VTS_01_PGC_01_4.VOB 1048574 KB
VTS_01_PGC_01_5.VOB 42236 KB
Pocket Divx Encoder will only show the first file of this set since they're linked together as one video on the DVD though they're physically seperate files. Other VOBs on the DVD will also be shown and can be selected.
The movie I converted was Fahrenheit 911 for the record.

| guess i have the older version. because when i click on the open video button, i can only open AVI and MPEG files. i have yet to try MOVs, but i know for sure that it cannot open WMVs. i'm just too lazy to upgrade...yet

| Yeah, I wish it could convert WMV, but for free it does a lot as it is. I hate WMV.

| i don't mind WMVs. i just hate the fact that no freeware developers (developers of video encoding programs) support the format. i've read that Pocket DVD Studio and SmartMovie can encode WMVs, but they're both commercial products. ARGH
