Jeff, You make me Sad.

Your podcast makes me feel very sad. You also forget about Tapwave, they are still alive and kicking. All I can say is that was a stupid mistake for the company to split up, if only handspring, palm, sony, and tapwave were still developing their own products maybe we would be happy right now. I don't blame you ditching your T5 though, I did. By the way, Lets Try Not to fight on chat tomarrow.

Sorry, this is not really Tungsten related, but this is a pretty active forum.

Anything you guys want to say about palm OS. or about palm, ahh, palmone, errr palm?

Sorry Mitch, but AFAIK, Tapwave is dying too. They are moving to becoming a developer for integrated hardware, and are dumping the purely Palm PDA idea.

well, they still support their pda's though. You can go to support and at least you get answers.

sorry, but unlike sony, they don't just stop supporting pda's one day.

Actually, Sony released a couple updates to the system after they stopped selling the TH, their last device. You can still go onto their site, download updates, and view all of the documentation. We will have to see for how long Tapwave releases updates after they stop selling their systems. Anyway, its not the developer support that matters, but the third party support, from companies like Mobile Stream.

There is a method to the madness. I'm working on my column for Monday and it's amazing how the pieces might fall together.

Suffice for now to say that the negativity and gloom from Kent Pribbernow and others is once again premature and unwarranted.

These are the ashes. The Phoenix is coming.

I was surprised that Tapwave were still developing stuff at the moment (Well, the WiFi driver anyway. I cope they're still doing stuff with it 'tho because it crashes really easily on mine!).

Sony hung around for a while but since they were pulling out it doesn't make sense from their PoV to bother supporting the Clie line (Lets face it, Sony support has never been what you'd call great anyway )

But I'm with you on the split T|5; I always thought it was a bad idea from the start, and I still don't know what the point of it was (If anything both companies are worse off now than if they had stuck together!)
Someone reckoned it was so that the Palm licences would be opened up more, but if anything the opposite happened, with Palm1 now the ONLY licencee of any noteworthyness!

All we need now is for Microsoft to initiate a hostile take-over of Palm1src and then everything will be smegging perfect

Frankly they'd be much better off, esp. if they can hire back all the oldsk00l PalmOS devs PalmSrc sacked, but they will have a lot of ground to re-capture, and rebuilding the company will be a long and arduous process. (Big shakeups like that really screw things up).

Still, if they can recapture the elegance of the Palm Vx days, or maybe branch out some more (Like buying the Clie name and IP off Sony ) we'll be good.

This is, of course, merely wishful thinking on my part however...

What they need to do is hire Sharky, Dmitry, and Cliepet. Those three alone could replace their entire programming staff.

Well, but they dont.

BTW; I think that PalmOS on Linux definitely also will be available for PDA's(PDA=Smartphone-GSM...). It could be as simple as an IFDEF to create two different versions, so I wouldnt fear the death of the PalmOS PDA yet!

Never say never

But it doesn't look that optimistic... well who knows, weirder things have happened.

TBH, with the direction of things I don't think PDAs as we know them will be around for much longer.

We're leaving the golden age of geek hi-tech and entering the age of Consumer hi-tech now, the realm of crap support, crap build quality and a throwaway mentality... Mmm, a lot like computers now that I think about it...!

Man I sound so depressing.

I know, everyone have a cookie!

(Munching on a Fig Newton, startled by the irony.)

I think you are right.
The question is, where is the hip, modern geek gonna go for their thrills? -Biotech?
