Anyway, I proceeded with my experiment. I deleted backupman and installed rescobackup. I re-installed Fonts4OS5 and included it in the application lock end exclusion list of rescobackup. I then tried to backup....I had a soft reset and a message appeared stating that Rescobackup caused the reset. I deleted rescobackup. Re-installed backupman and installed rescolocker, then included fonts4os5 in the lock list. I made a backup....it was successful. Previously, everytime I make a backup with Fonts4os5 installed, I always get either a soft reset or soft reset loop. But not I can make a successful backup. Rescolocker is great! |

Fantastic, RescoLocker works with ClipPro as well, which was previously crashing both Backupman and Botzam Backup (the 2 backup programs I own). |

must be something else going on. I just have f4os5 locked and backup with RB works great. I havent even bothered to exclude it from backup list!
has anyone seen any speed increase with Rescolocker. I tried locking in a few things with Rescobackup but didnt make any noticeable difference to launch speed.
btw, also have textplus in and no resets with it locked in . A bit slow though!! |

| looks like I spoke or posted too soon. On my 3rd (or was it the 4th) backup, I got a soft reset, and a message appeared that the reset was caused by backupman. I experimented again and I observed that if I do a warm reset (as suggested for rescobackup), prior to backing up with backupman, I am successful in making backups. |

| Just an update. Today, I had numerous soft resets, not necessarily occuring after backing up. My LD has become very unstable after installation of Fonts4OS5 and rescolocker. I ended up uninstalling bot applications on my LD |

well, it wont but in any case, where would you back it up to if it was more than 2Gb for example....I am taking the view that usinng the drive for storage if non-mission crtical stuff (mp3s, some movies, ebooks, non-essential documents) and keeping RAM backups and other important stuff on the SD card, is probably the best way to use these devices. |

Hi,
So far, the only backup program offering an option to backup the HD is BackupBuddyVFS professional. However, IIRC, this backup must be run automatically, and also there is the problem of storage.
For me, if I must back something from the HD up, I just use the synchronisation with my PC, or an onboard file manager like FileZ or RescoExplorer.

| I may have misunderstood. If you just want to backup lifedrive to PC, I would just copy everything over in drive mode! |

Hi,
At first I was doing that too, but I found out that the synchronization in the LifeDrive manager works pretty well, in both direction (i.e. if you have a synched folder and you add some files in it on the PC, then synching will bring the files on the LD, well, that's what synching is about ;-)
I like that I can synch over wireless, what the drive mode doesn't allow. I also use WiFile Pro sometimes to copy files over wireless. But the synchronization mode has the advantage that you don't need to think about it. For example, the folder hierarchy with all my Palm applications is synched to the LD, it's nice to have everything in case I need to install something temporarily. Also all my e-books.

Laurent |

| just an update but this is the 4th day of my trial for rescobackup (I am a fully paid up backupbuddyvfspro type also but bored of waiting for the LD update). Ok, I havent tried a hard reset and restore and that is, ultimately, the real test but as far as automated backups and no resets is concerened, resco has been flawless so far. I will probably register it to support the resco guys who seem to be really on the ball and extremely helpful.
oops, my 500th post on 1src! Cool! |

Hi,
Good to know. I use RescoBackup every day to backup my LD up 3 times a day, and had to make a full restore already 2 times (due to my trying old applications, obviously not NVFS compatible), without any issue. Just make sure that you have the latest version, as they have been solving a few bugs I reported, for example a soft reset when restoring individual files (as opposed to making a full restore). Also, the newer version is much faster when doing a "Diff" operation, because you now have the possibility to make a Diff based on Date, Content or Both (before it was always "Both" by default, which was much slower).

| Reliable backups I have done some testing this week with TealBack and RescoBackup this week.
I did 4 seperate tests.
1) TealBack backing up everything
On restore, program seemed to restore everything but then crashed while
displaying the completion dialog. I was unable to view the error log
because of the crash. I know there are some files that won't restore
from prior TealBack restores though. After the reset my WiFi connection
was gone and I couldn't figure out how to re-add it.
2) TealBack only backing up MY files, excluding anything I did not need
Restore was perfect. No errors, no crashes. I had to reestablish the WiFi
connection but that was it.
3) RescoBackup backing up everything
On restore it seemed to complete and I got to the RESET REQUIRED
screen. After hitting reset the LD locked up on the Palm Powered screen.
In other tests I ended up in a reset loop that I couldn't break even with
warm reset. A hard reset was required in both cases.
4) RescoBackup only backing up MY files, excluding anything I did not need
Also work fine. All files restored, no errors, no resets. Again, I had to
reestablish my WiFi connection since the database containing that info
was not part of my backup.
So it seems the best way to get a backup that will restore OK is to eliminate any files from your backup that don't need to be backed up. For me this was all the built in apps and databases other than SavedPreferences and UnSavedPreferences. I do back up all my installed apps and their related databases.
While this takes a few minutes of work up front it only has to be done one time and it reduces the time/size of your backup as well.
This trick doesn't seem to help BackupBuddyVFS since it doesn't even seem to run on my LifeDrive. It crashes as soon as I start it. I am a long time registered user of that software so it's a bit irritating.
I hope this tip helps anyone who is having trouble with getting or restoring a backup. I have been fighting with this since last Saturday morning. |

| I haven't tested a restore yet (and hopefully won't have to for a little while) but the backupbuddyvfs pro I downloaded off their site today (to make sure it was most up to date) was able to backup all my files off the lifedrive I have onto the internal harddrive.
Hopefully it restores fine too. Haven't tested the backup to SD card yet because I don't have one big enough (only 16MB) |
