my compiled list of freeware apps for Palm

LAST UPDATED 8/1/05
-alot of new calculators
-some fun/misc. stuff
-freeware word processor and spreadsheet app

This list excludes games. For games, look here
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthre...ed=1#post830239

If you guys have any other freeware apps to add for Palm, post away. Include DL links for those that aren't readily available. Also include a brief description for those apps that aren’t obvious by name, and maybe even a short review if you’re in the mood

Find these by searching within sites like www.palmgear.com, www.handago.com, and www.palmsource.com. You can also google them by entering “freewarepalm” + <name of app> as the search terms. If the download link on FreewarePalm doesn’t work, try linking to the developer’s homepage to download the app.

Key:
* - recommended
** - highly recommended
! - have used before
~ - had problems getting it to work

Calculators
Power48 – ”PalmOS based emulator for the Hewlett-Packard 48SX, 48GX and 49G series of calculators”. In short, a neat HP graphing calculator. Only engineers will really make full use of it though. Requires a hi-res screen. Hi-res+ portrait is recommended. It also requires A LOT of memory (home site says 12MB of free internal RAM). There are shareware graphing calculators with smaller footprints and color graphs among other features for those having problems getting this one to work
http://www.mobilevoodoo.com/power48.htm
EasyCalc v1.22 - “Scientific Calculator with trigonometric funcs, complex numbers, graphs, unlimited number of variables, degree/radian mode, HEX/OCT/BIN/DEC conversions and more.”
snapCalc5.v6.3 - “ It allows you to pop up a basic calculator from within any PalmOS® application, do some calculations, and, if you choose, copy the result to the underlying application”

Converter v2.2 !*- Converter that can handle A LOT of different unit types. From engineering, measurements, cooking, computer science, and beyond. Pity it doesn’t include a currency converter. That would’ve rounded out the deal.
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfmfu...EF=&prodID=3367
parens lite!* - a stripped down version of shareware version Parens, and another version Advanced Calc that was licensed to Handspring Visor model line users. Interface is different from Parens and Adv Calc, but otherwise, you can add in (import) the rest of the conversions types that the 2 have for the same effect. All have memory and 10 digit display. Parens has parenthesis operations as the only feature not available in the other 2.
B-S Calc v1.3x – ”This calculator is on par with Parens Lite and does some things a little bit better. I actually have both this and Parens Lite on my IIIx.”
PalmSharp - An algebraic calculator with multi-line display
Kalk 2.1.2 - – ” This calculator is for all of you RPN geeks out there”
http://www.hpmuseum.org/rpn.htm
http://www.geocities.com/freewarepalm/calculators.html

Watch/Alarm
BigClock!** - still no hi-res+ nor hi-res support, but it’s still a great app to set multiple time alarms, set days that alarms go off, countdown timers (ie remind yourself when to turn off the oven in 20 minutes), stopwatches, and even customize up to 4 simple MIDI alarms of your own. Apps like Datebook, Calendar, and Datebook5 can also set alarms, but the interface and extra options make this more of a joy to use. Unfortunately, unlike those 3 above, BigClock doesn’t support the T3’s vibration feature.
Khronos!** - stopwatch for runners or lap runners. Times shown down to tenths of seconds, can record up to 10 laps of times, and easy access to stop and reset using the up/down buttons.
Watchmaker v1.2! – Requires hi-res, color screen. Multiple clock views spices up time telling and dates. Alarms available here as well. Whereas Bigclock lacked the polish, hi-res, and nicer look of this app.... BC does have better functionality which is why I deleted this app and stuck with BigClock instead.
ClockPop5 - Clock will “pop up” on the screen everytime a certain button is pressed. For os5 devices, pressing the center button when the device is off, or pressing the statusbar or clock icon when the device is on accomplishes the same thing, so I kinda find this pointless
SC-103PU! - Units, Logic, and scientific modes are included. They’re supposed to be plugins (free and shareware) that add additional functionality
http://palmos.front.ru/
GeekSounds!* - These integrate into Datebook, Calendar, and Datebook5 alarms. Perhaps in other apps and those used by other Palm PIMs as well. Adds more non-polyphonic tones based on popular culture in addition to the default chirps, concerto, etc. tones provided by PalmOS default
Emerald Sounds v2.1 - Being from the same dev, this can be considered a sequel to GeekSounds. It contains all the MIDI tones of GeekSounds but with its own extras (South Park, Metallica, more movies, TV, and much more!)

Backup Programs
Backup - Apparently, aka “BackupBuddyVFS:Free”. Going by the screenshot, the look does resemble Blue Nomad’s 2 other versions of this popular backup app which are shareware. According to Blue Nomad, This freeware version was just that but was made shareware at some point. It is now the basic version that doesn’t offer features like incremental backups/restores (the option to backup/restore up individual files)
http://palmos.front.ru/
Inner Backup - Nice GUI. May have issues with certain models. m515, z72, and T|C were mentioned, while other users also report some of these to work fine. I don’t know how they tested it, but to be certain, I would test the backup AND restore yourself for peace of mind

Launchers, desktop environments
SkPad!~ - Supposed to allows for tabbed interface with adding of expansion card apps mixed in as well. Last version months ago crashed my T3
Singlebutton - turns your app and other hard buttons into 4x the number of apps accessed
http://www.beiks.com/palmzonebg/Sho...asp?TitleID=302

Screen Button v2.30 - Fast application launcher. VFS is still in works though
Button Launch v1.9”Button Launch is a utility to let you launch applications (and prefence panels) by combinations of the hardware buttons. Button Launch uses 6 of hardward buttons (the two scroll buttons and the four "application" buttons) in two ways: a short tap (tap) and a long press (tap and hold for more than 1/3 of a second)”

File Managers
FileZ!** - Great file manager. Almost like having Windows Explorer and its functionality for your Palm handheld. View basic info like folder/file sizes, create/modify date, creatorID, type of file, and can even sort them by those attributes. Can color code types of file, set attributes to files (to backup during hotsync, hidden, archived, etc.), copy/ delete files without affecting settings in the saved/unsaved preferences that Palm Delete would, and view all the folder contents of your SD card unlike the Palm Launcher. Last but not least, supports hi-res+ devices.
FileProg - People say this is more of a supplement than alternative to FileZ. In other words, some people keep and use both this and FileZ on their handhelds. A user claims that this app forced a hard reset on his handheld, but that was the only case reported and does seem very rare to happen. Otherwise, this is also quite a favorite
3X Commander v1.02 - the lesser known good file manager. Supports up to hi-res+, can display 2 viewing panes for viewing/manipulation, and small footprint at 44KB
File Caddy -
http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-283.html?FileCaddy

ScreenShot utilities
zGrab - seems to be a favorite among all types of users. From those with grayscale devices to color handhelds, from with hi-res screens to high-res+ screens in capturing the DIA area, and even zodiac users.
HRCaptDA
Zgrab
Snap - hardkey trigger. Saves snaps only in .bmp format
JollyRoger
Snapshot5 - Tiny footprint. Only for grayscale shots
mScreen -
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mscreen/

drawing/sketching apps
PenPenCol v3.1! - Got it’s own feature set. It does resemble the sketching app that came with many Clies for taking freehand notes, but with some extra features. At 113KB, it’s pretty trim. Each image eats up about 200KB each. However, a 1src user posts it doesn’t work for his zodiac tho. No support for hi-res+, but it does allow for scrolling of vertical canvasses larger than your screen (like Notepad). Exporting to bitmap is available.
http://www.pamupamu.com/soft/penpencol/pencol_e.html
http://www.pamupamu.com/index.html some of his other freeware apps
MoePaint!* - Good footprint at 200KB. This app leans towards the drawing category. Has some nice features, the least of which include: set various resolutions for each sketch (even up to 640x640, these images eat up 2.4MB each!), hi-res+ landscape and portrait support, color sampling, various air brushes, textures, pen sizes, colors, shades, fill screens, tools like straight edges and curves, and even artistic effects like smudging and over coloring. You can export and import pictures as BMP and even add layers on top of your sketch
Diddlebug - freehand notes with alarms features
HappyDays - Application for collecting birthday info from address book
Idea Pad - like a flow chart program. From the same devs as FileZ

media players/viewers
TCPMP - The Core Pocket Media Player. Based off a similar freeware app that was developed for PPC, possibly by the same dev. A media player of video and audio that supports some comman formats. Good freeware alternative to mmPlayer since it plays many native files w/o conversion unlike Kinoma Player/Producer
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/
DioPlayer - Plays popular formats including MP3 and WAV. Has skins and can play audio off internal RAM as well as SD card. Some random review below. Only for devices with Palm OS 5.2 or above
http://www.pdabuzz.com/Home/tabid/5...ioPlayer10.aspx
http://216.239.37.104/translate_c?h...2005-24,GGLG:en
RealOne Player for Palm! - this comes with most P1 handhelds and I’d bet even some older Palm Inc. handhelds as well. This is a no frills MP3 player that will work with virtually any Palm OS hardware. You can set your own playlists. I still stick with the older version that came bundled on my T3 and z71 CDs since I don’t find screen fading worth another 150KB or so of space to be worth it.
TextDrive v1.5 - DOC viewer
Plucker – Offline HTML viewer
AvantGo ’05 - ”Retrieve information from the Web and corporate intranets directly into your handheld. AvantGo lets you store Web sites in your PalmPilot, so you can read them later. You merely select the Web sites from AvantGo's desktop application, and then you HotSync the information to your Palm. The AvantGo Palm client is compatible with ASCII text, HTML documents and GIF or JPEG images.”

Database apps
DB (or Palm-DB) - Nice little database application
Yaps - DB app to encrypt and store passwords for sites and other uses

Programming/Development
Palm Pascal - ”What is PP ? : PP is a freeware standard Pascal compiler for PalmOS that runs directly on the handheld. PP generates true native 68000 and ARM executable code from standard Pascal source code. Console applications, standard Palm applications, shared libraries, DA's, armlets may be generated on board in the train, while waiting the bus, while fishing, on the beach, or wherever you are.
We hope this site will be a tool of knowledge sharing.” Unfortunately, Palm Pascal Compiler also forms the acronym PPC

http://www.ppcompiler.org/?lng=en
OnBoardC – ”create PRC program files w/o requiring any libraries for execution
http://sourceforge.net/projects/onboardc

reference material
Palm Quran v0.98b - Holy Quran in Arabic. Requires no Arabic language support
http://www.freewarepalm.com/religion/palmquran.shtml
The Holy Bible for the Palm - Good ‘ol Bible in DOC format in up to 48 languages.
RoadLingua! - this is an app that reads databases in a particular format. The app reader is free as well as well as several of its databases. Some of the more practical free databases include 1st aid, area code reference, area code to city lookup, US zip codes lookup, PPC programming guide, and drug guide. Other free databases include famous B-days, dying quotes, Chinese to English dictionary (only for single characters, doesn’t cover phrases), and poker terms. There’s a nagging reminder to register for the reader which despite the website link provided, doesn’t allow me to register. You can still use the app normal despite the nag and it isn’t that bad. However, the devs mentioned that the app will only be able to recognize a maximum of 16 lexicons/reference items at a time. Pity
www.absoluteword.com
CIA factbook
Noah Lite - supposedly the best freeware dictionary out there
Metro - Métro computes the shortest route between two subway stations in more than 300 cities around the world (Paris, New York, London, Tokyo, any city with a subway & more!). FREE, FAST & ACCURATE

utilities
BL Off! - aka Backlight Off. As far as I can tell, this only works on a Zire71. Has no effect on my T3. Allows you to set the screen brightness to below the minimum setting that’s available via the brightness slider. Multiple taps of the app let you adjust the brightness below that threshold
Silk Dimmer - This has been tested with a z71, T|E, and T|T. Also reported working with a T|T2, but *NOT* a T|T3. As with all of these backlight adjusting utilities, “working” is defined as setting the brightness setting to below the factory minimum while still being able to see the screen contents.
http://silkdimmer.sourceforge.net/
Backlight - This supposedly works for a T3
http://www.net-cell.com/bricenter/bloff.prc
MultiUserHack!* - Let’s you change the username association for individual apps. Great in use where you have a new handheld with a different username. Some devs’ policies won’t permit you to re-obtain a different registration code for a different username of software you already paid for.
http://www.pdassi.de/product.php?prod_id=3688
Icon Manager!* - create and manage icons for apps that use them like Agendus and Datebook5

BatteryGraph - Looks like it does some testing or diagnosis on your handheld’s battery
Benchmark - Looks like benchmarking for your CPU compared with other known Palm handhelds
http://palmos.front.ru/
Speedy v5.2 - Yet another benchmarking tool to compare handhelds and test performance on single handhelds
Password Launch (Freeware Release) v0.5 - ”allows you to select the desired applications to be protected. With this software, password will be required to access a protected application”. Later versions appear to be shareware
FullPower - is a tool to control battery threshold value on PalmOS 5 devices to get additional amount of working time. Despite being shareware, it’s reported that the demo period is unlimited

SoundOff - http://palm.tunt.lv/zoom-disc.php?m...69&tabula=faili
WarmSync v2.0 - ”Schedule an automatic HotSync throughout the day or week at the interval you specify”
MSmount5 let’s you stream database (or read only parts of apps) off SD card as opposed to having to copy the entire contents from SD card into internal RAM first to run the app. This app would allow for fast load times of large apps and allow handhelds with low dynamic heap memory and/or user RAM to run larger apps

PIM/organizers/productivity
HandyShopper - A buffed up ToDo list app.
ksDatebook - Like datebook5, uses the same db that Datebook and Calendar PIM. With less features than datebook5, but more than the built-in and being free, this is a good replacement for those that want something in between
ksToDo - Like ksDatebook above, but pertaining to better than ToDo, and Tasks features while being less than Agendus’ version of a souped up ToDo app
Due Yesterday - ToDo app with more features: Desktop component, hi-res+ support, and archiving to name a few
MiniBook - Like Address..... small footprint, extra fields/types, but doesn’t have a desktop component, doesn’t look like it uses the same database as Address/Contacts, and more of a replacement if true
Contact-M - Like MiniBook above, but this one has its own set of features. Unlimited categories for one

MiniWord - Simple word processor for simple word processing. Unfortunately, there’s no compatibility with M$ Word files, but from this to Word, copy and pasting will work one-way
FreeGrid - Spreadsheet app. Unfortunately, there’s no ability to perform calculations/formulas, no desktop component, nor Excel compatibility, but seems to work great for just static data

Flash Cards - Create your own flashcards by entering text to help you memorize or study

FontHack - change fonts system wide or for certain apps. Requires hack manager
TreoAlarm v0.99 - ”Add Alarm Clock with Weather Forecast to your Treo 600. Not only it will wake you up, TreoAlarm will also deliver local weather report and 5-day forecast to your smartphone”. Still in public beta, so get it while it’s still free
Grouptextmessaging - from PalmOne? For SMS I think.
http://mytreo.net/downloads/details...upTextMessaging
SoundRec - allow voice recording on devices with the ability to record sound. Good for tr600 and maybe tr650 users if it works on them. Seems pointless for other pOS devices with a microphone since those devices will already include Vmemo software. Perhaps it’s better than those built-in apps?
http://www.infinityball.com/soundrec.aspx
Today - ”gathers information from the built-in applications Date Book, Mail and To Do and displays the things to do today together with current time and date and owner of the handheld device”
TopGun SSH – “an ssh (version 1) client for palmtops running PalmOS and having a TCP/IP stack”
PalmVNC - “an ssh (version 1) client for palmtops running PalmOS and having a TCP/IP stack”

miscellaneous/fun stuff
PalmPuke - lets u swap different sound effects in lieu of inserting/removing an expansion card. Some hilarious sounds are included
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?f...F=&prodID=46623

Sun Compass - An actual working compass app for your handheld. Not asx good as an actual compass, but still better than nothing. The link also contains an explanation of how it works
http://www.ive-software.com/sun-compass-palm.php3

Palm Mirror - Rather pointless for modern handhelds with a reflective TFT screen that goes black when turned off, but I’m told older Palm Inc. models w/o the reflective screen actually turned green when off.

Voodoo - Your own virtual voodoo doll. Take out your anguish with this.
http://palmsource.palmgear.com/inde...f=&prodid=28892

FakeCall - Used for Treo600 but can probably also be used for the treo650/180/270/300 as well. Allows you to set fake incoming calls and even customize those fake ring tones

PalmaSutra - complete compendium of sexual positions
http://www.palmasutra.org/eng/download/download.html

fDic - Allows you to cheat at crossword puzzles and other such word games. Enter the letters you have and it lists all the possible words it could be. English, Spanish and Catalan languages available

HAL9000 - " The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made". This program displays, realistically and worryingly, the electronic eye and the affable voice of HAL9000, the evil computer in the film "2001: A Space Odyssey". For science-fiction fanatics. Page says not compatible with Clies, but one user reported it working on his TH55, so YMMV
http://www.ejse.com/products/hal9000.htm

Animated 8 ball - Like the “magic 8 ball” game
http://www.tucows.com/preview/34046

THROUGH YOUR HANDS v1.7 - ” Palmistry, Chirology or Cheirology is the study of the hand. It involves looking at all aspects of the hand - handshape, finger length and shape, the thumb, nails, knuckles, .........”

Bombel! - Bubble wrap with photo-realistic, hi-res+ graphics, and realistic popping sounds. Even keeps track of stats
http://www.freewarepalm.com/graphics/bombel.shtml
Bubble Wrap Emulator - similar to above. It seems like the above is better
http://palmgear.com/index.cfm?fusea...re&prodID=16235

Scare the Doggy - scares away dogs by emitting a high frequency of 16KHz that’s annoying to dogs but not so for humans
http://descargas.terra.es/informaci...id=34621&plat=5
Mosquito - scares away mosquitos
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?f...teid=1&siteid=1

LightMorse - Enter text and this program converts it to Morse Code flashes and/or beeps
http://www.freewarepalm.com/educati...ightmorse.shtml

MakeFaces - Easy interface and fun theme makes this a good app to entertain young kids

Hands –

Texas Hold'em Odds Calculator v1.0.1 - ”Stop losing, start WINNING!
Many poker players cannot understand why they lose money playing good starting hands.”

http://www.freewarepalm.com/calculator/texashold'emoddscalculator.shtml

re DioPlayer:

Wow, didn't know that it played OGG as well. Any idea on where to find skins for it?

I will add to the list later...

Programming

PP (Palm Pascal) - a complete on board programming alternative to C. A very mature app with great development. Can be found here: http://www.ppcompiler.org

Actually, i checked the description for DioPlayer and it doesn't look like it supports OGG. Just WAV and MP3. Doesn't seem right as OGG is open source and free.

Nice list, BUT:

I checked out the HAL9000 app, and it says specifically that it's NOT compatible with Clies. Is this true?

Well, your avatar is the best! I really like it, even if the character was unbelievably un-nerving...

Probably, altho sometimes devs and READMEs aren't always correct. You could always try the app to be certain but please BACKUP YOUR HANDHELD first!!!! Hotsync AND use any backup programs to SD card first!!. I have tried countless 3rd party apps, and one of them actually forced a hard reset. After restoring, I tried it again, kinda not believing what happened and the second time, it installed and ran fine.

I'll add the lack of Clie compatibility for my next update anyways.

Well, it's now working on my TH55. I guess there could have been a conflict with something else when originally installed (system is now 'clean' for TCPMP benchmarking). Pity it isn't HiRes+

Any idea what triggers the change in "messages" in HAL9000? They do change, but not every time it is opened. And if you leave it up for a minute or so it starts talking again. And of course you get the "Just what do you think you're doing" when the screen is tapped.

(Suddenly Styx' "Too much time on my hands" is running through my mind.)

SC103-PU I've been using this FREE scientific calculator for years. It also does unit conversions and has logic functions as well.

I thought i had that.... I used it briefly for my z71. IIRC, while it was free, there were some plugins that weren't free?
