| Moving from TH55 to Lifedrive Well, for weeks I chuckled to myself that my TH55 did everything that the LD did (courtesy of a 2gb Memory Stick) and that I would have a LONG wait before I would have a need to upgrade/change/move to PPC
Then, boom, TH55 dies a sudden death, 3 months out of warranty. No warning, pop and an overheating case that feels like it will melt if I don't take it off charge... Sony takes its usual approach, shrugs its shoulders and tells me that repair will cost £100-£200, no less.
So, with no new TH55 to replace and nothing much on eBay (UK anyway) I decided that the LD was the next logical step. I am still a Palm loyal, no desire to go PPC, but the T5 is cheap to the touch, IMHO. I am presently awaiting delivery, due next week.
So, I have copied all the backup files from my Memory Stick (from Sony's MS Backup program, I dunno what the Palm equivalent is) to my PC, and have tidied up my archives.
My questions are -
Can I copy the Backup files to the LD and then "restore" my programmes and settings? If so, where on the LD do they go and what programme restores them?
If I simply hotsync the LD using the same username will all my files and settings appear anyway?
Anyone else made this move and have advice to offer?
Cheers

| I don't have a Lifedrive but most that do says that's it best to start over or else you might get resets-crazy. And MSBackup is Sony only, so I doubt you will be able to restore that to Lifedrive, and some of the apps you are using are optimized for Sony's HHE processor, it will cause problems on your Lifedrive.
Get a second TH55, I think most people prefer it over the Lifedrive. |

| I'd start clean also. There's too much that can go wrong moving everything from one device to another.
Get a TH55 if that's what fits your needs. Get a LifeDrive if that's what will.
I almost bought a TH55 when they came out, but Sony's exit from the market put me off. The LD is fantastic for me. Weigh your needs and buy what fits them. |

| Thanks Adrenochrome. I loved the TH55, but Sony's exit has been a worry, as application upgrades may well pass it by. The thing about the LD is that the syncing of entire folders renders my intended purchase of an external hard drive backup device unnecessary. My critical files only run to 1.35gb.
That's a difference of £80 anyway, and I also get to sell my 2gb Memory Stick for £100 as well. When you look at things that way I effectively get the LD for £120 and get future product and software support. I would rather stay with the TH55, but am not paying street price for a unit that has sat in a warehouse for over a year, and has probably the same useful life as the one I had which just died.

| Start fresh. I just upgraded to a LifeDrive from a TH55 and decided to start from scratch based on what I have heard about application incompatibilities. I have been installing programs one at a time and making sure things are OK before moving on. |

| @weelogic, sorry to hear about your "loss"!. As one old TH55 user, and now a LD user, I undertand your attracttion for the TH55. I also intend to use my LD as a HDD back-up for my laptop.

| Well, the LD arrived today and I am impressed. Yes, there is a slight lag as mentioned in other discussions, but it's not noticeable and the auto-syncing of whole folders is a fabulous addition to the package. I have installed all my critical programmes (there are only half a dozen that I use on a regular basis to be honest: Agendus Pro, Handyshopper, Tomtom Navigator, Redo, Busker and Docs to Go) and they all installed just fine, no resets, soft, hard or in between. The real test starts Monday when it gets into work mode.

#11 | | Guest | Well, Weelogic, now you have had it for the whole day, you still in love with it? I have an old Tungston T, have been thinking of upgrading, don't like the T5 since it doesn't have the voice recorder. Now the lifedrive has me interested! Keep us posted | |

| Am I impressed - oh yes! By using Sharkboy's amazing caching programme the lag drops to an unnoticeable level. I am looking for a better utility for mapping the buttons, however, as there's a glitch in getting it to open Agendus at the correct view. That's a minor annoyance though, no worse than the TH55's daft power switch that TheGoGo cured.
I much prefer the launcher to Sony's effort, and the fact that landscape is fully functional is great. I used the landscape app from Mobile Stream latterly and it made a major improvement, but I was never fully satisfied with launchers in landscape. Now I am (I hate all those multiple status bars that ZLauncher and Megalauncher use).
Autosyncing whole folders is fantastic. I get to backup critical files, kids photos and tunes without the usual messing around. On the subject of music, I still think that Busker is far better than Pocket Tunes, both in simplicity of operation and quality of sound. Subjective, I know, but there you are.

| You could do away with the top/bottom bar of ZLauncher if you want. What I didn't like about LD's own status bar, is that the battery meter is not displayed, you will have to press to get the battery/sysinfo popup window. It would have been better if it's displayed always.
i really like Busker's ability to display album art, if you are playing mp3 on a big color screen PDA, might as well take in all the eyecandy...now, if they could make some visualizations, it would be neat (but probably a CPU and battery hog). |

| I'm curious, was the TH55 a gaming device in terms of control? Were the PIMs out of place, tiny, or hard to press? |

| @weelogic - thanks for the tip re: Busker. Sounds very good when playing OGG files. From memory, I think the TH55's MP3 player was really good, better than PocketTunes but probably not as good as Busker with OGG files.
