you should edit your post then to reflect that other deleted one. No1 will ever know

MicroQuad was another game that was 4+ MB. I needed nearly 7MB free to run all the levels, which on my z71 was no easy feat

I am using the trial version of SharkeCache 1.1 since yesterday. While it seems to do some good when loading the apps locked in the cache, I am still experiencing lags with some of them. These lags seem to occur when e.g. going back to Favorites (cached) after using DateBk5 (which I have LockCached) and Blazer and TCPMP (which are not locked in cache). I am not sure, but there seems to be other occasions as well when I experience a similar lag as I do without SharkCache.

Wait a minute here...I thought I had about 3.8MB out of the 4MB of the SharkCache utilised, but now when I checked it said 4.2/4mb. Is it possible to lock more than the 4MB in the cache?

Also, I have been trying to find which app/panel to cache in order to get the brightness/battery/mem screen to load without a delay, but all my experiments so far have not enabled that.

Any ideas?

hi!

>I am not sure, but there seems to be other occasions as well when I experience a similar >lag as I do without SharkCache

this could very well be. due to the nature of the LifeDrive, apps that directly access the hd for media-related tasks will not experience a benefit from the cache like a data-centric app (DateBk5) would.

>Is it possible to lock more than the 4MB in the cache?

No... but in your case it seems that the application you locked added records to its db or something like that to increase its data size. while this is still ok, i recommend un-caching an app or two to get it back under the 4mb threshold

>Also, I have been trying to find which app/panel to cache in order to get the >brightness/battery/mem screen to load without a delay, but all my experiments so far >have not enabled that.

i'll look into that and get back to you. currently you can't cache hidden applications using SharkCache, and i think that popup is hidden (or it's not a normal app type, that is 'appl')

I have purchased and am using SharkeCache 1.1 and can reproduce the lagging consistently:

Calendar, Notepad and Tasks are lockcached!

1. Switch to Calendar (Agenda View).
2. Switch to Notepad, draw something, and do a "Save". It will access the MD now.
3. Switch to Calendar (Agenda View) , now I'll get a 1 sec lag.

Another problem is, when the Multimail(Versamail?) application is Sharkcached, the machine will fall into an infinite loop of reset. Any ideas Sharkk717?

(Sorry Off-topic a bit: Can any Life Drive user kindly send me the default wallpapers bundled with the LD to my email richard.yeung at gmail.com? I've deleted them accidentally... Thanks a lot!!)

hey ypw!

your test example doesn't reproduce lagging for me. actually, launching calc the second time is actually faster. however, i'm continuing to look into this. for now, maybe try a combo of TempCaching one and keeping the other locked or quickcaching one immediately on reset and tell me how that goes (you can email me: sharkboy717 at aol dot com)

>when the Multimail(Versamail?) application is Sharkcached...

i've seen this report from one or two other users. i'm looking into it but for the time being don't cache the app.

thanks! regards, sharky

Is it possible for the next version of SharkCache to cache the databases as well as the app? Or does it already do that? I suspect that must be where my slowness is. I'm trying to cache the following apps with 1.1:

Agendus Pro (nee actionNames)
AudacityPro
InstantText
Launcher
LifeBalance
Tasks-PTod (I assume this is the built-in ToDo list)

SharkCache IS enabled.

I find that, with or without SC, it takes several seconds to launch LifeBalance, Agendus Pro, the Launcher, or even Tasks, and there are still significant orange-LED hard-drive accesses, as well as green-LED "fake RAM" accesses.

Ideas?

SharkCache already does cache both Database and applciations. Just to check: have you reset your device after changing the settings to LockCache and are you sure the Enable button is selected?

also, if you try QuickCaching these apps do you see any difference?

thanks! regards, sharky

Oh! I somehow missed the mention of "after reset" in the docs. You might want to add a "Now reset your device to activate these settings" dialog in SharkCache...

Yes, that's much better. I still see a little bit of HD access launching each of the apps, but it does happen in under a second. Is some access normal? If not, any way to see what it's doing?

hi jay! good suggestion

yes, some HD access is necessary to save any changes you made to a DB in an app. as you mention, it should always remain <1 second (unless you made mega changes :-])

Sharky, many thanks for what appears to be a great app. As soon as I can be sure that the new Pocket Tunes 3.1 will work, I'll be buyin'.

Some thoughts for the future: Is there a way to use SD ram to help speed things up? Many (most?) LD users already have SD memory cards, so maybe there's a way to use 64mb of it as a duplication of the original HD partition. Any app could then be loaded into the LD ram from the card instead of the HD, speeding up all apps. You could still have SharkCache's original cache-locking system to keep maximum speed for certain apps. The card could keep the HD partition updated behind the scenes.

There may be other ways to utilize the faster speed of an SD card as well. Just an idea.

And what about replacing the Microdrive with a fast compact flash ?

Do you think this is possible ?

CoolMel.

hi! i can look into SD ram, but from what i've seen preliminarily it will be hard. the only solution i can think of would be to redirect app launches from the hd to the card.

i imagine it may be possible to switch the HD compact flash, but i wouldn't try it. i'm not really a hardware guy

thanks for the ideas!

regards, sharky
