| SharkCache Released! Hey LifeDrivers!
SharkCache lets you eliminate the application lag time that has become the ominous trademark of palmOne LifeDrives by allowing you to permanently cache applications that you often use!
It has a price of $10 through paypal (7-day trial), pending the PalmGear/Handango release. If the speed issues of your LifeDrive bother you a bit (as they did for me) it may be worth a look: http://www.ludustech.com/modules.php?name=SharkCache
enjoy! regards, sharky
PS: this is my first app to have a tag line (or should i say a "lag line", jk). actually, it has two: 1) Your life doesn't lag... why should your LifeDrive? and 2) Less Lag, More Drive

| a little explanation of what SharkCache does:
The LifeDrive has 10 megabytes of cache (this is known as DBCache), and SharkCache only lets you use up to 4 megabytes of this space (40%). The other 60% is movable heap, for the system to use.
Media-centric apps can't be cached easily since they read off the card (in this case the hard drive) and never actually put the source file into cache in its entirety (this is generally called "buffering"). consider the case with an app like TCPMP: ALMOST EVERY movie is >10 mb... it can't all possibly fit into the cache at once.

| So Sharky, how much memory does the LD actually have? I heard it has 64mb. What is the rest for, and might it be utilized in future versions of SharkCache?

| Hey jjf!
ok, let's do this lol
Hard Drive is partitioned into 1) 3.8gb segment for your "card": basically all your movies/music/etc... 2) 64mb segment for applications. this is like the RAM on a T3 or TH, and since it's on the HD there is LAG while trying to spin up and put the data into cache. 3) the rest of the space is a partition for holding the OS
RAM is divided into 1)16mb for the ROM, 2) 10mb for DBCache *** this is what the OS uses to copy the HD apps from the 64meg partion ***, 3) 6mb heap space like on most palms where running apps can handle data like variables.
regards, sharky

| I see, because alot of people were saying it had 64mb of RAM, which isnt true. It really just has 64mb of fake RAM. You know what might be useful? A program that could re partition the HD to give more fake RAM space.
As for the ROM, isnt OS5 only about 8MB?
6MB of untouchable heap space.
Well, it sounds like SharkCache does just about all that is possible from that description. They really should have given it more cache.

| prayer4eev- as jjf says, it's IMPOSSIBLE to fit 35mb of apps into a 10mb space... i'm doing all i can given the circumstances. if P1 wants to give me more cache to play with then that's excellent. you're the only one on this thread who doesn't seem to understand the point of SharkCache: to speed up the LifeDrive. it does this and it does it well and to the best of my abilities.
jjf- yes, a re partitioning app might be cool . i'm not sure about ROM but as i remember it was definitely under 8mb when i last check so yes 16mb is a bit much
regards, sharky

| afaik OS takes about 15Mb's
about repartition - correct me if i am wrong but i think that OS5 is not able to address more than 64Mb of RAM.

16MB is just the right amount for Cobalt...

| Sharky's Right sorry to burst your bubble prayer4eev, but Sharky's exactly right.
1) Using 4mb of the HUGE 10MB DBCache is not gunna hurt your palm, i mean have you even herad of an application bigger than 2mb (and that's big)
2) In answer towhat you said about opening those "huge" pictures and "huge" movies, unless they're being handled by another db, they're gunna go to that 6mb heap space Sharky takled about.

| prayer4eev- yeah, 64mb might be tops for OS 5 (i think you're right about that) BUT... lol
as jjf says 16mb is perfect ROM space for cobalt so maybe P1 is thinking along those lines (serious speculation)... b/c cobalt can do up to 256 megs of RAM
regards, sharky
ps: sorry if i came across as angry back there in post #7... but if you reread your post #6 and pretend you're the developer and you're reading false information that accuses your app of false advertising, think of how i felt! i didn't see your clarification

pm
well, more than 8mb's because of all apllication that are i being supplied with garnet?
15mb OS with applications in ROM and 1Mb loader.
yeah Cobalt will deal with a lot of things ^^, more than 64Mb addressing, vga, mt. sweet, sadly it does not hae CF support. i wont be against if OS6 took 64Mb ^^
Superjoe
i think that i already apologized about my words about heap memory?
and explained that i just misunderstood.
