| Yikes! Hot LifeDrive! I just finished loading up the HD with music, and when I picked up the LD, it was darn hot! Not burning-hot, but way past comfortable. It was sitting on a desktop with plenty of ventilation around. This is the first time in three days that it has gotten anywhere near this hot. Must be that giving the HD a major workout takes a toll. |

| Hmm...
I unplugged it and let it sit for a minute, then tried to turn it back on. Nothing. I plugged it back in again and it came on and responded fine. I unplugged it and fiddle for a few minutes before a low-battery warning popped up. It had been plugged in for about three straight hours.
Hope it's not a defect. Haven't noticed anything else that would suggest so. Interesting... |

| I would watch it very carefully and keep it in a well ventilated place. Several people have mentioned that the LD tends to run warm. I cannot help but remember the first Apple PowerBooks and the first Dell attempt at a notebook--in both cases the units had a tendency to burst into flames and had to be recalled.

| The T5 of my friend heated my SD card to a pretty hot state after having it inside for only 30 seconds. And one of my IIIc's gets quite hot as well. Don't ask me what happens here, but the Sd card still works and so did the IIIc.
Probably either processor, screen brightness, battery charge or drive heating! Tried underclocking yet? |

| Adrenochrome, how much music were you loading? I'm thinking that write access would demand more from the HD rather than read access. Does the LD get hot while you're listening to music? |

| palmone should put a warning in there to say that it will get warm. Because it WILL get warm it's a hard drive. thats why the entire back has holes to ventelate but it will still get very warm when writing/reading lots of files. But theses hard drives are designed to get hot and not malfunction so don't worry. Unless it gets so hot you can't touch it, don't worry.

Sorry, missed this earlier...
I loaded about 3Gb of music onto it. It got hot enough that though you could hold it in your hand, you probably couldn't touch it to your neck (how's that for scientific?).
I haven't noticed it getting hot at all when playing music. It definetly seems to only be an issue with lots of writing. |

| Dang,,,
That's why I hate the idea of putting these HDD on MP3 and PDA. I know the flash price is kind of high but I feel a lot better. Also, if you are carrying HDD device you have to constantly watch out for it since it's weak on physical shock.
If HDD gets that high when it's writing, how do they expect to put musics and movies on them? We all know that extensive heat will damage HDD, LCD and others parts inside.
Well, I guess you can use LD for coffer warmer while you are putting 4Gb of movies.

| Weird, I hadn't really considered that heat could be an issue...!
I mean, unless you're thrashing the seek head around and constantly accessing the HD, it really shouldn't get that hot...!
(I can see how restoring a 4GB image back onto it might, but since the USB interface can't keep up a high enough data rate to stress the HD it shouldn't even then!!) |

| It's a shame PalmOne chose a MD instead of flash memory. I would've settled for a 2GB LifeDrive with flash memory. In fact, I think PalmOne did this to get the maximum profit (MD is a lot cheaper) and yet, they still price the thing at US499... |

PalmOne should have also placed two SD card slots in the LifeDrive just for exandability. Seeing its a media device.

From the looks of it this does look like a high profit device for Palmone. I have no problem with the harddrive, but the device would run much better if Palm had also given it 64 megabytes of flash memory to store and run your programs. Save the harddisk as a storage drive only.

Yeah right; That be too 'daring' for them.
Their design department has less balls than the Clie designers have sanity
Mmm, I just thought; Imagine all the cool stuff in the Tapwave Zodiac 2 combined with the cool stuff in the TH55
And then add a 1mm thick slideout membrane keyboard!! (No foldies, I HATE foldies!) |
