ok this is battery extending on almost the cheapest possible ...



4 batteries
1 battery holder
severed usb wire
optional? - usb charging cradle

since the output of 4 rechargeable batteries is close to 5 volts this works rather well. except one thing, you have to remove the batteries from the holder and charge them in a real charger ...

options:
- search for battery extender on ebay, they are a bit nicer than my electronics project battery holder ...
- you can omit the cradle if you can find another way of securing the wires to the right spot, it is empty! ... there is only a led in its circuit ...

how to wire this ghetto contraction for dummies
1 charge batteries
2 put in holder
3 connect usb end of severed wire to charger without ux!
4 try different combinations of wire until the led lights up
5 solder the wires in place
6 secure wire with some strips
7 go brag to some eb40 owner that you made a more powerfull battery extender for $20-$30

warnings:
- havent tried it with regular batteries, they would be 6v together, I guess it would be well within the ux voltage regulation limits, but somehow I don't want to be the first to try

DJBOA did you make that picture? I noticed the third-party cradle (the only one that still can easily be found) and would like to know how bulky it is. Is it much bigger than the original cradle from Sony? I intend to do an extended battery mod and would like to know if such a cradle would me suited for my project. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Wow, this looks rather simple. However, I don't have a USB charging cradle. I'd also be a little hesitant to cut up my charging cable... I wonder if there's any other even cruder way to do this? (But safe of course... The last thing I want is a dead UX40 because I wanted to get an extra couple hours of battery life).

I am not versed in all this type of electrical stuff. So how safe is it for someone like me to be playing with this? Would I be putting my UX40 at risk?

So say I hook up the batteries together in a similar fashion. Then connect to wires to complete a circuit to the bottom of my UX40? Could it possibly that simple? What about safety? What does the UX40 do when the internal battery is full? Does it internally not accept anymore current, or does it rely on the charger assembly to cut off?

Just curious to know about this...

well, there is no electronics in the usb charging cradle that cuts off the usb voltage when the battery is full .... so if you have the guts to use the usb cradle as is, this is pretty much the same ...

and connecting the batteries after each other in series with the points in the bottom of the ux should work, just be sure you are doing it to the correct points!

if you havent messed with any electronics please dont mess up the ux as a first project ... this is a very easy mod ... but buying a ready made usb battery extender and the usb cradle on ebay is much safer ... I'm just to cheap to pay more in postage to denmark than the extender costs

For the people who are stupids in electronics (As I am), you can try this list. Much cheaper than EB40. Specialy if you consider that many people have a ziplink (aditionnal cost 0 USD) and many buy a case or a second cradle.

The list : (prices are correct only if my memory is good)
- case/charger at ShopBrando or surplusPDA for 32 USD. There is a test made by the Gadgeteer.
- ziplink, same place 15 USD.
- case for 4AA at surplusPDA for 10 USD

Shipping : 3 USD.

There are others solutions :
- replace case/charger + ziplink by a kit from Brando including cradle+ziplink.
- other cases for AA batteries, more expensive, can be found at Semsons (expensive shipping costs) or Boxwave. Semsons has a case which can be used as a flashlight.

I love this, this is way better. I get to keep my skinny device and use a skimpy cable to charge my device. I'm all for this method.

BTW, I haven't gotten it yet, just excited.

it is bulky ... I am seriously thinking about doing hippo's mod, this thread was requested when I mentioned my current extender in hippos thread as the reason I was hesitant to jump into it ...

Remember this... easier said then done.

I tried his mod then I remembered, I'm not an electriction or technical expert. So I partly damaged my EB40 and devestated my JC40. I'm ordering a solderer to fix my EB40 but I'm also considering your method djboa. DJBoa, just get the leather case. It has a USB port in it for charging. You mod is for novices like ourselves while Hippo's mod is for tech experts.

For example, I noticed that my JC40 became very bulky when I tried to close it. Even when I placed my UX40 battery in the JC40, it was still too bulky to close. Did you think of this? I didn't. This is why Hippo takes off the protective covering exposing the dangerous Li-Ion. I'm not that desperate for power. Your mod is also the best solution for the most power. 9200mah!!!!!!!! That is beautiful. I misread it first thinking the UX had 16000mah, but when I compared, I noticed how way off I was. Great find man. Stick with this, trust me. Only if you have some engineering background or have a friend that knows engineering.

Only suggestion to give you is to get the $10 battery USB pack. Then use your Data cable as a power extension. Then you can place the pack in your pocket and keep your device connected to it for power. OR you can get a Mini-B Male to Female cable that can extend from your mod.

2300 mah @ 4.8V - in series
9200 would have to be parallel and would be at 1.2V ... not practical ...

anyways ... if I was to do hippos mod I would take great care to use the same batteries as he did, I guess the ux battery is a tad thicker, or you didn't take of enough material from the interior ...

anyways, lets try and keep this and hippos thread seperate.

Wait a sec. So what are you saying. You have 9200 mah worth of batteries. So are you telling me that you only get to use 2300mah? Whats the purpose of the extra batteries. If you are telling me that each 2300mah battery is used until it dies and another battery is used then that's fine.

Please explain.
