| switch to mac? I am becoming increasingly fed up with my pc and am very close to getting a mac (mac mini, iBook or PowerBook). It would be great for my iPod but I'm very attatched to my TH55 and don't know how smooth the transition would be. Any advice, tips or tricks?
I really like DateBk 5, SnapperMail and the SplashWallet Suite. Would I have to get new registration codes for those to work on a mac. Are they even compatible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers in advance. |

| In short, programs on the Clie will continue to run there just fine. The problem will be with syncing. You should strongly consider Missing Sync by markspace.com.
There's no SnapperMail sync on the Mac. The best I've seen is a Entourage conduit. Splash does some Mac syncing, check the web site for specifics. Again, I don't think you'll need new registration codes but you'll need to investigate the sync situation. |

| Agree with the missing sync suggestion Hi,
Yeah I'm also definitely considering getting ahold of missing sync. I've been just using palm desktop with the TG50 and really would like to explore what that program has to offer. I just hope I can find it at a retailer as I don't want to have to buy it online. One thing about mail, if you get missing sync it provides internet sharing with the pda and so you could always just use your email client to connect directly to your mail server while plugged into usb.

| SplashWallet Suite works fine on a Mac. I use the Splash desktop versions on my iMac - SplashPhoto, SplashID and SplashShopper all work well (note that there is no desktop version of SplashMoney).
I don't use MissingSync. I'm very keen to hear of others' experience with it as mine was terrible - syncing with it was very very very s l o w ...(10 minutes plus!)
If no-one else has this problem, I might try it again.
Good luck with your Mac. As a former Wintel user, I couldn't ever "switch back". OSX is a stable, powerful and beautiful OS. I can still tinker with it, but unlike my wintel machines, I don't NEED to tinker to keep things running smoothly. If you get a Mac mini let us know your experiences (I'm considering buying one for my parents - I'm tired of being free tech support for their PC!).
Cheers,
Tim |

| no problems here! Hi to Vienna Ziehensack!
Even though Snappermail does not sync with desktop there is an easy work around: just check in prefs (in SM) to leave emails on the server. Once you are at home/office use your normal email client to fetch your emails once more... the only draw back is, the sent ones you will not be able to sync unless you send a CC to your own email Adress!
In terms of MissingSync: yes, in the very beginning it took 8 minutes or so, but by now it is about 1-2 min!
Hope that helps!

How do you make sure your SplashWallet data gets backed up? Do you use the Memory Stick for that? |

| I've been using a Mac Osx with a NR70v, UX50 and now a TH and have no problems syncing at all, use missing sync and everything will go fine. As for slow syncs?? there is a check box in Isync that forces a slow sync, do this on your first sync then uncheck it. Use Palm desktop and in the conduit settings enable Isync. I tri sync with a BT phone and TH all over Bluetooth.
Funny, i'm thinking of finally ditching my mac for a PC, seems too many new things will only work on a PC. Looks like BG will get my cash after all. |

The SplashWallet conduits syncronise with the desktop versions on every hotsync (exports SplashMoney to a CSV file) and hotsync also backs-up the SplashShopper, SplashID & Splashmoney data. Photos are on my desktop already. So I end up with 3 copies of all the data - handheld copy, desktop copy and back-up copy.
Cheers,
Tim. |

The real advantage of Missing Sync is the ability to switch conduit sets on the fly. If you set it up with one preset to do installs only and another to just update you main PIMs without doing all the backups, it actually syncs in under a minute for most connects. Quick updates of my PIMs run 20 to 30 seconds at most.
The only time syncs drag into the times you saw in the early version is when you enable all the conduits, and have a lot of new stuff to backup, or when you are using special conduits, like Pocket Quicken, or AvantGo . But those are app specific, and drag on the regular Palm Desktop, making the abiltiy to change conduits on the fly a major reason for investing in Missing Sync.
I find the new version (V 4.x) to be significantly better than my Palm Desktop for XP at work. With USB 2.0 it actually flies, compared to the earlier versions. It also seems much better at implementing the hotsync manager on the Mac than the Palm desktop for Mac was. I would have to reboot to get the Palm hotsync connection to reset all too frequently, but will admit that I'm not sure if that's still as much an issue, since I've been using Missing Sync for the last two years. |

| My experience with Missing Sync (both v3.x and v4.x) under OS X with my TJ37 has been very positive. There are a number of reasons for switching and I wish you the best of luck and believe that you will be very happy with the Mac platform.

| An Update Hi again. Well I did email markspace and there is no way to get missing sync at a retailer. I have to download it and pay over the net for it. I wouldn't mind except I don't have any way of doing this at the moment.

| more help needed well, I'm now within days of ordering my mac (still haven't decided between mac mini or iMac) but have another question: how can I easily transfer my data (e.g. iTunes mp3s and photos) from the pc to the mac?
If I put them onto an external hard disc via the pc and then connect that to the mac will that do it or will it want to format it and erase what's on it first?
Any more help much appreciated! |

There are some 3rd party apps to assist the proces (refer Apple website for details), but for a basic transfer use of an external hard disk works well. That's how I transfered data when I bought my iMac. The Mac sees the drive even when formatted for a PC.
Good luck. And definitely keep me updated about your choice between Mac mini and iMac.
Cheers,
Tim |
