AudioPlayer Discovery!!

Not sure if everyone knows this but you can play MP3 files at 32kbps on the UX in the AudioPlayer in the ROM. Read below.

Quote:
Audio Player Ver.3.1

Using the Audio Player application, you can play MP3-format audio files and ATRAC3-format audio files on your CLIÉ™ handheld. To play music from audio CDs on your CLIÉ™ handheld, convert them to ATRAC3-format audio files using the supplied SonicStage software on your computer before using this application.
You can switch and display the list of audio files instead of the playback screen.
Audio files you can play with the Audio Player application
MP3
• Format: MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer-3)
• Sampling frequency: 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz
• Bit rate: Minimum 32 kbps to maximum 320 kbps
• File extension: .mp3 or .rmp

Notes
• The Audio Player application does not support MP3Pro-format audio files.
• You cannot play VBR (Variable Bit Rate)-format audio files.
• The maximum number of playable MP3-format music files on your CLIÉ™ handheld is 999 files per “Memory Stick™ ” media or per Internal Media.

ATRAC3
• Format: ATRAC3
• Sampling frequency: 44.1 kHz
• Bit rate: Maximum 132 kbps

Notes
• You cannot play ATRAC3Plus-format audio files on your CLIÉ™ handheld.
• You may not be able to play some audio files even if they meet all the above specifications.
• The maximum number of playable ATRAC3-format music files on your CLIÉ™ handheld is 400 files per “MagicGate Memory Stick™ ” media.
• You cannot play ATRAC3-format audio files stored on a “Memory Stick™ PRO” media since your CLIÉ™ handheld does not support the copyright protection technology adopted for “Memory Stick™ PRO” media.

Supported storage media
• “Memory Stick™ ” media *
• Internal Media (supports MP3-format audio files only)

* There are two types of “Memory Stick™ ” media: • “MagicGate Memory Stick™ ” media, which is equipped with “MagicGate” copyright protection technology.
• “Memory Stick™ ” media, which is not equipped with “MagicGate” copyright protection technology. You can use both types of “Memory Stick™ ” media with your CLIÉ™ handheld.

You can play back music files stored on either type of “Memory Stick™ ” media in the Audio Player application. However, you must use a “MagicGate Memory Stick™ ” media to play back ATRAC3-format audio files on your CLIÉ™ handheld.
“MagicGate Memory Stick™ ” media (color: white) Standard “Memory Stick™ ” media (color: purple) “Memory Stick PRO™ ”
ATRAC3 usable not usable not usable
MP3 usable usable usable

Note
You need to install the SonicStage software on your computer. For the installation procedure, refer to “Installing the SonicStage software”. Also, read “Requirements for SonicStage” before installation.
Requirements
• SonicStage software (supplied on the CD-ROM): You need to install this software on your computer to convert music recorded on music CDs for the CLIÉ™ handheld.
• “MagicGate Memory Stick™ ” media: You need a “MagicGate Memory Stick™ ” media to play back ATRAC3-format audio files.
• Your computer

Look in this directory:
C:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\Manuals\PEG-UX50_PEG-UX40\CLIE_application_manual\00_nav\nav_f1500.html
on your computer. You should find what is above there.

iTunes is evil. It lets you use AAC, or MP3. Nothing else supported. WMP lets you play anything it has a codec for.

MP3 playback on Audio PLayer

Hi there,

I think NONE of my existing MP3 are in Constant bit rate, so Audio player is useless. I am not going to re-encode all my MP3 to be able to play them with Audio Player or even Media Launcher --which looks great, thanks to JAmerican.

Do you guys know a good alternative to Pocket Tunes, which would not drain the battery ?

Thanks,

Couldn't agree more with moUk. I was one of the 1st users of dbPowerAMP, and it's awesome plain and simple. Powerful with many features, supports every codec under the sun.. the list goes on.
iTunes: Featureless, codecless, slow,.. it even sucks when it doesn't have an iPod attached to it.
People with iPods are so stupid they probably don't even realise the drawbacks of essentially having _1_ application for their music "player" aka "trying to be cool with money because it doesnt have any features" device.

I do not use audioplayer as it does not recognise ID3 tags and for me this makes it useless, if there is an easy way to list songs by artist and album in audioplayer then i'll start using it. As it is I put up with the poor power usage of pocket tunes for the sake of not listening to my mp3s in one big alphabetically arranged playlist. Audioplayer is probably one of the worst music players I have ever encountered.

Maybe I'm just stupid and can't figure out how to use it.

And another thing, I can't seem to copy anything into RAM, it's not an option in FileZ. Maybe I should be asking this in a new thread.

And another thing, DBpowerAmp is fantastic.

Clarification on MagicGate

This thread needs to be updated with the following information:

Memory Stick Pro media are equipped with MagicGate DRM technology -- they are currently sold in black. The problem is not that AudioPlayer/any Clie is not compatible with MagicGate DRM on Memory Stick Pros, but rather, something more ridiculous: Sony hasn't bothered making SonicStage compatible with Memory Stick Pros.

This has become a sore embarrassment with the release of the PSP. Users are realizing that Sony's bundled software cannot copy music to the PSP onto anything larger than 128mb (i.e., Pro media).

The history is stupid and immature. Sony has admitted that its executives at the Connect and hardware divisions are in a deadlock-fight over ATRAC vs. MP3, so the warfare has suspended all development on this compatibility issue.

At the very maximum, I have received correspondence from Sony saying that they are considering updating SonicStage to recognize Pro media. Sony refused to lay out a timeframe.

I have not installed PocketTunes as I find AudioPlayer sufficient. What are the primary benefits of PocketTunes over Audio player.

For me, VBR MP3.

I have my entire collection ripped to VBR MP3 and I do NOT want to go through that again.
