How do I keep Quick Install from doing a full HotS

OK, I am hoping this is one of those "duh!" things. I just upgraded to a Treo 650 from my Treo 600 and T|3... I was using Envicon's Pilot Install, but it doesn't seem to like my T650. So, I am now using the Quick Install, but when I do, it always does a full HotSync.

I have poked around in the online help and googled a little, but I can't seem to find the obvious I guess. Can someone tell me how to use PalmOne's Quick Install to install a .prc without doing a complete HotSync?

I would be much abliged.

TIA

matty

I am not familiar with the Treos, but on my T|E, T|C and TH-55 I always just run HotSync as normal, wait until the initial "Installing Applications" message goes off (for me usually replaced by "Syncronizing Documents to Go") and then cancel the HotSync from both the Windows app and the Palm. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to cancel but I have never had any problem with it.

Regards,
R

Thanks for the tip, of course I could do that, but isnt the Quick Install App supposed to just install the file without a complete HotSync?

Anyone?

I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but my understanding of the Palm Quick Install is that it doesn't shorten the Hot Sync but instead makes it easier to get the apps on your handheld. By either double clicking the app icon or dragging it to the Quick Install icon, it is added to the install pluggin for the Palm Desktop. This is much easier then the old install app. On the old Palm Desktop, you had to search and find, then open the app to add it to the list and then you could only put it on the handheld. With the Quick Install, you have a choice of where to put it but a regular Hot Sync is still used to install the apps.

Well, you obviously figured it out before I did...All this time I thought it wasn't working right for me...

Of course I think Quick Install is a pile of poo. Nothing is easier to use then Pilot Install. Double-Click, Hotsync, done. Here's how...

Credits to rbienstock on TreoCentral for posting how to get this Pilot Install to work.

1. Create a separate folder and put pinstall.exe in it.
2. Search your hard drive for other versions of pinstall, and if they exist, delete or rename them.
3. Copy USBTransport.dll from your Palm directory (usually C:\Program Files\Palm) into your new pinstall directory.
4. Make a second copy of USBTransport.dll in the same directory and rename it USBport.dll
5. Go to your System32 directory (usually c:\windows\system32) and rename the file USBport.dll to something else.
6. Copy USBTransport.dll and USBport.dll from the pinstall directory to the System32 directory.
7. Run pinstall and do Options>Unregister Filetypes, then do Options>Register Filetypes.
