Apps affect Battery Life

Dear All,

I know TH55 uses Sony's new CPU which (the cpu clock) stays slow when the system idles and speeds up when the system is busy. Of couse when the cpu's clock is slower, the battery life will be longer. Otherwise the battery will drain faster.

So I'm wondering if all those hacks (or hack like apps) will affect the battery life? I know many games consume a lot of battery power. But how about those hack apps (affecting the battery life) when using normal PIMs or eBook readers?

Those apps (what I can think of) include: McPhling, DefaultCapture, FlexButton, HardButtonXtender, The GoGo, Hi Launcher, Font4OS5, 1ButtonPro, CodeDive and etc.

There were some reports on the performance differences when enabld or disable some of the above apps. But haven't seen any reports on how they affect batter life.

Anyone did any test on this thing? Will the above apps affect the battery life dramatically?

Just curious about this.

BTW, I have McPhling, DefaultCapture, FlexButton and Font4OS5 installed and enabled on my TH55, and I use LauncherX as default launcher.

Thanks and Cheers!

I care a lot about battery life; you can never have too much. There have been a few threads that have discussed this a lot. Probably the easiest thing to search for is threads that discuss "hede" and TheGoGo slowing down systems, also look for discussion about "PalmInternals" and threads that Igor_n has participated in.

To answer your question quite literally where you ask "But how about those hack apps (affecting the battery life) when using normal PIMs or eBook readers?" you should find that most (all?) hack apps will not affect battery life in any significant way, even ones like TheGoGo that people complain about. This is because the reason these apps can waste CPU cycles is that they introduce additional processing overhead into the PalmOS event handling mechanisms. For something like an ereader or PIM you are mostly looking at a static screen and only doing very occassional processing so for the most part these apps aren't generating significant event traffic in the system so whether the event burns 100 or 1,000 CPU cycles isn't that significant if there are only a handful of event every minute going through the system.

Running something like Bejewelled however, which generates a lot of events, is an altogether different matter however.

- Julian.

All I can say is that I've found when the unit is powered ON it affects battery life more than when it is powered OFF!

I feel like I've installed something lately that is messing with my battery, as I've noticed the battery being lower than I expect sometimes. I haven't bothered to start removing stuff and doing tests, but I'm getting suspicious that something's fishy. I've also noticed the MS activity light going on periodically when the Clie is off. I've heard people mention this before, but I forget if there was an explanation. One of these days I'll really look at it. I don't think it's The GoGo because I've had that installed from day one.

QuickSheet definetely drains your battery faster than other apps. I am always amazed how it drains my batteries when I´m entering data. Guess it´s doing a lot behind the scene, like checking all the fields for input etc. . Don´t know if the recalculate only if asked helps...but doesn´t seem like it.

If you use a 3rd party media player like PocketTunes or MMPlayer, they don't take advantage of the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) in your TH, making the processor do all the work and reducing battery life.
