| Explain to the teachers what you intend on using it for ie note taking, homework orgainstation, dictionary look up etc and be prepared to show them at the end of week what you have done. Maybe write up a FAQ sheet for teachers about what a PDA is <grins>. Get home room teacher or (prinicpal if apporiate) to approve it first, so if aske dto put it away, you can politly tell them you have already got permission.
There are a few threads if you search the listing lots of school uses/programs that may impress them.
Make sure you dont abuse the right if you are allowed to use it! |

| at my school i don't think it would be a problem- there's a kid who actually brings his laptop. i took mine all last year, but have yet to actually use it in class this year because i hate the stares "what's that"s, and the "can i see"s from people i don't know. but most friends are cool.
most schools should let you. you might not actually need to ask. just don't get into trouble with it.
our dress code has on it: no cd players, no mp3 platers, no cell phones, but nothing about handhelds! (although if they knew what all it does...) |

| Two years ago I was able to use it but different homeroom teacher she brought her viao to school every day before every teacher got laptops. My teacher this year is thinking that one day every student will have laptops more like PDAs but anyway there's nothing in the school policy concering PDAs. So when school starts should I just whip it out in class and start doing notes and recording lectures or should I do something else?

| My pda 2 years ago was a SJ20 black and white screen still a very great machine but now I have a TH55 so it could be more of a distraction to other students.

| My school years were over before PDAs really came out, so I don't know from direct experience, but I would suggest:
As firescorpy said, be VERY careful with it. People will steal anything that they don't have, in my day it was likely to be a walkman (we used to have these things called tapes... . Anyway...) Think about whether your school environment really allows you to protect your PDA all the time. Are there times when you'll have to leave it alone and can't put it in your locker? It would be very useful to have in school but if you can't know that it's safe at all times, it may not be worth the risk.
As for your teachers, I agree with others who said to get some good school software (or use the built-in apps) and show them how you use it. I would suggest not to get caught playing games on it, not even at lunch hour, because you don't want to remind them that it has that capability. And don't let your friends see your games unless you want to get bugged a lot.
Hope it works out. Someday all students will have something like a PDA and we won't have to go through this. |

| I don't like using my PDA in school because I like to keep mine locked and in my pocket or backpack. For some reason, I prefer paper for school. Occasionally I will use ImagiCalc in math. Technology isn't adopted that well in our school. If I had enough $$ to buy a Zire72 AND a Zire31 that would be great because I could keep my 72 locked up and away while my 31 I can keep in my pocket and not worry that much if something happens to it. I know having 2 PDAs is kinda oxymoronic but that's how I am

| When I used to be at school if someone had taken in a PDA it would have been confiscated - the teachers there would consider them cheating. In some maths lessons we were instructed that if our calculators could store formula then we had to clear them.
There was one kid who had a laptop - he needed it for visual aid reasons. It was the size of a small shed!

| In junior high I got banned from using my Clie to control TVs; I think some kid was using his watch so that got the administration mad about it. I was allowed to use it as a dictionary, calculator, etc., though. Everybody wanted to play games on it, too. Overall I think teachers don't mind that much if you explain them beforehand. |
