How can I hot sync directly to Sony Clie and not to the memory stick?

Hey All.

I was just wondering if anyone can or knows how to hot sync movies, pictures, etc.. directing to the sony clie PEG-TH55? I've been trying to hot sync anything, but all the software I have that came with the sony clie will only let me hot sync to the memory stick, which I can't afford right now...

Any help will do. Is there some other software that I can use that will allow me to hot sync directly to the CLie? I have the data export and Image converter. Please help........

unfortunately, due to palm's, how shall i say, "unique" setup of their file system, ONLY .prc and .pdb files are allowed to reside on the main handheld. Therefore, you're only option is to buy a Memory Stick, or buy a Palm that uses cheaper storage (such as SD cards).

Don't worry though, memory sticks aren't THAT expensive (well, actually, never mind), but you can save SOME money on them.

Disk Manager

If you're feeling a bit advanced... (even though you might be a n00b)
You could create a RAM disk. I love this program. However, without registering (and according to the release notes, possibly even the registered version) you can't make a RAM disk larger than 8MB.

If you do use this, make sure to use the 'permanent' option versus the temporary one. (both are easily removed) I've had problems using the temporary ones (which supposedly are removed after a soft-reset)

Disk Manager

Edit: Instructions
After creating a RAM disk with Disk Manager, hotsync your TH55... You will have a notification in the log that the expansion cards have changed.
Then put the file you want into Install Tool (making sure to change the destination to RAM disk NOT memory stick... you may need to change the destination from memory stick to RAM disk like I just did)

Then hotsync again, which will install whatever you wanted to your new RAM disk (Any type of file is fine: prc/pdb or not... e.g. .jpg, .mp3, etc.)

PLEASE NOTE: most of the built-in Sony applications will not work with anything but a memory stick, but most 3rd party programs, including AcidImage for photos, mmplayer for video/mp3..., etc. will work just fine.

P.S. sharkboy717, without a VFS RAMdisk, You are, as you well know, correct about the PalmOS file system, and I assume when you said it was his "only option," you might have been taking his possible lack of experience into account. I am assuming his main reason for asking is to delay purchasing a memory stick.
Regardless, he should buy a memory stick ASAP... especially if he wants to take advantage of the extended battery life by using the built-in applications and the built-in DSP.

enderenya-

i really didn't ever know about the RAM disk option LOL! interesting, and maybe i'll look into it to see what makes it tick

Once again, it shows that 1src is made great by its community of great posters, each with his/her own knowledge of Palm!

Well I was hoping...

Hey, thanks for the advice. I also have a tungsten E palm and I thought there was something like the software that my tungsten has that could hot sync converted items(pic's, mov's, etc..) directly to the palm. With my tungsten I can convert almost anything and store it to the palm. As long as I have space. Thats kinda weird that it will not let you convert a movie or pictures and then store it to the Sony Clie. I have a couple MB's of space I could have saved pictures to.

Hey, you know what? I have another question. Maybe the answers the same as before, but..
How come I can take pictures and store them(with the installed camera that came with the clie), but there's no software that I can use to convert pictures and store directly. It makes no sense to me. Oh well, I guess I'm out of luck. I'll keep looking though.

One truth always prevails.

Ah, but you CAN convert. There should be a program on your CD that allows you to install a program that converts pictures and movies on your PC into a format that can be used on your Clie. At least, my N610 and NX73 came with such programs.

right, but the format it converts them to has to be installed on your memory stick

There is a mozilla-license command-line PC freeware software that does the trick: convert bmp, jpg or Macromedia flash files into PDB format that can then be installed directly on the TH55.

I have used it successfully to transfer background for ZLauncher and Macromedia flash-files to my TH55, all this without any memory stick (actually, I even infrared-beamed the created pdb from the PC to the TH55).

The software is called "PAR" and can be found here.

All you have to know is the right creator ID and file type but you can get that from existing files already on the Clie.

I have not tried (yet) for Macromedia Flash with sounds (again, Macromedia flash 5 files without sound are OK) nor for movies files (MPEG).
