| How much free RAM do you have/keep? Every new handheld I've ever owned has had a memory card slot.
For that reason I've made something of a hobby of keeping as many apps on the memory card as I can.
EDIT
I figured I'd throw in here that keeping apps on the card has saved my bacon when migrating too!
END EDIT
MSMount used to be the way I side-stepped large or non-cardable apps, but then I switched to ZLauncher, which handles them too.
There is a little delay while ZL loads up large apps and databases, but it's totally acceptable to me.
As a result, I am running with alot of stuff on the card, but still have 24MB of RAM free.
Anyone else do this or something similar? I don't know why I try to keep so much ram open, it's just a thing I do.
How much free RAM do you run with?
Do you try to keep a minimum amount available?
How much open RAM SHOULD we leave available? And why should we?

Reason: grammar mostly, and spelling. Don't forget my horrid spelling!

| AFAIK, There are no issues concerning how much free RAM you leave on your device, since programs use HEAP memory to run, and NOT RAM memory.
That's the first point. We should keep in mind that some apps require a minimum amount of free ram to worl properly: Example: If you set the cache on Netfront at 1,2 Megabytes, Netfront will need AT LEAST 1,2 Megabytes of free RAM to use for caching internet pages.
Another good example is Mapsonic (GPS/routing software) which uses RAM for temporary databases to make its own route calculations when it's in use. These databases are deleted once you close mapsonic. But you need at least 8 mb of free RAM in order for mapsonic to work properly with large maps (which are obviously stored on the memory stik)
Hope this was clear.
BTW I keep all my apps (except some games) on the TH's internal memory and I still have 18 mb free. |

| Interesting! I wasn't aware of how the memory was used.
So it really depends on the kind of applications you are running and what their requirments are, as opposed to a general rule?
Of course reading this makes me think of moving some apps to RAM, simply for the convenience of faster loading times.
Not to mention still having them available when swapping memory sticks!
I've got my cache opened up in NetFront too. Great example! |

| One basic use for keeping more free RAM is when you beam or send files. If you send a series of photos or some large files (e.g., MP3 or movie clips), you'll need a lot of free RAM. If you need to beam a 4MB MP3, then you'll need about 4MB free RAM. |

| I take the attitude that I'll put everything on memory card unless there is a reason to put it in RAM. This means that the only things I keep in RAM are my PIM data (since that is about the only read/write data I have on the device) and my applications (since when I launch an app I want it to start up as fast as possible so, for performance reasons, I consider it a requirement to have at least my frequently used apps in RAM).
Right now I have 19.2MB free, but I am still installing software since my TH55 is relatively new. If my RAM went below 10MB then I would definitely start migrating rarely used applications to my Memory Stick. In fact even now, when I do my next cleanup, I really should move almost-never-used applications like icon manager and my big 2,000 icon archives off to memory stick since now that I have created my working collection of 50 or so icons set up, I will hardly ever access the other stuff again.

| Right now it has 24MB free. But I see it decreasing very soon.

| What tips do people have for freeing up RAM? I don't mean running stuff from memory stick, I mean what can be deleted from RAM if you're not using it?
For instance, I just went into the Clie Viewer section of Clie Organizer (which I never use) and found not only the famous 3 pictures (2 baseball kids, the mountain and one other) but I also found 4 freehand notes. Deleting all these cleared up a good few hundred KB of memory. I realise that these need to be deleted on the PC to avoid them coming back on a hotsync, and that they will come back anyway on a reset, but my TH55 is pretty stable now so even a soft reset is quite rare and I don't mind doing 5 minutes cleanup after a soft reset if it gains me an extra megabyte of RAM.
Are there any other items that can be deleted from RAM immediately after a reset if one doesn't use any of the Clie extra software?

| I deleted all reference files and the CO icons (big/small), which made up quite some space. So did Clie Demo, which got deleted right after the first hotsync. |

Oh wow! I'd assumed these were all in ROM so I didn't even bother trying. How do you delete the CO icons?
What steps do you need to take on the PC to stop all this stuff hotsyncing back? I assume one just notes the files being deleted and then looks in the Backup and Archive directories on the PC and deletes similarly named files.

| I deleted StickerLarge_enUS.prc and StickerSmall_enUS.prc. They show up in RAM for some reason.. If you want to reinstall them, go on your PC to this folder: Sony Handheld/Add-on/PEG-TH55/ClieOrganiserSamples/IconStickerData. Deleting the icons is only recommended if you donīt use CO datebook at all.
