Is the Clie connected to a "real" USB port or through a hub? On the Clie have you started the HotSynch application, and verified that it is set for Local > Cadle/Cable ?

| im using palm desktop that came with T E (not mine), i didnt use the clie desktop that came with the UX. this is my 1st PDA too, think you'll have to make a username for your desktop app.
in the Manual it mentions click on prefs icon, on the top right corner select network option, go to details and press scan, it should scan for available network
take a look around abit on your UX just dont delete anything you'll figure it out. glad to help |

When you tap the HotSynch icon, in the center of the Clie screen, to initiate the connection, does any error message appear?

| emm did you try the scan? 1st of you have to make sure you are in a wireless network. if you are, what does the message say coz some networks may need you to enter a wep key, whatever it is. you'll probably have to check the settings of the network. an open network should be fine, make sure youre within range and its just like plug and play . i have only had my UX not so long ago myself and ive been able to manage with few (some eventually resorted to hard resets) troubles . |

| I would approach the USB problem as a PC configuration issue. If you are running a firewall on the PC, try disabling it. When you first connected the Clie to the PC's USB port did the PC "recognize" that a new device had been attached and install drivers for it? (It's been a long while since I used a wired connection, I cannot recall the normal first attempt behavior.)

When you installed the desktop software, did you have the UX50 connected to the computer? You shouldn't have the Clie hooked up until the desktop software is installed. That way, when you hook it up, it will recognize that one is attached. It also installs the USB drivers for the UX50.

You can run into problems if you use the Palm-desktop that came with a Palm device, rather than the Clie-desktop that comes with the Clie. Sony modifies the Palm OS when it puts it on their PDAs, and their desktop takes those modifications into account. It may work now, but you could run into some problems down the road.

| There is another way to link your PC to the Clie via USB. This is NOT a replacement for HotSynch, it's only for file transfers, but it will help you test if the PC and Clie can communicate via the USB port. On the PC start the "Data Export" application, and on the Clie start the "Data Import" application. If this works, the PC will be able to see the Clie disks.

| the computer recognizes the PDA when i plug it in, then a wizard pops up stating I should install software that come with this hardware but the thing is i have already installed it ;/
same goes for Data Import
as for wireless LAN when i scan i finds a access point but i think i need a WEP key, how do i find out what the WEP key is.
EDIT:: wireless lan has a bit of progress now all of a sudden i did not need WEP to select the access point after i scan. This is the new problem when i try to connect it goes 'initalizing' then it goes to 'connecting: MSHOME' then 'getting address: MSHOME' then it will jump to 'retrying: MSHOME' then it doesnt connect can someone help?

the problem is i cant install both palm and clie desktop at once. it will create all sorts of havoc. this is already being mentioned in the manual somewhere, and from personal experience i know this (installed clie desktop with when palm desktop is already installed!!arghh!!). id like to install clie desktop you think the T E would work well with clie desktop? ive only got 1 PC so its gotta be one or the other. since palm desktop is more general i took to that path, so far im happy with no troubles syncing and using quick install is as easy as pie . of course i did install some of the bundled apps that came with the UX like dataExport. still not able to figure sonicstage out, just move MP3 files from dataExport |

I never had that problem before when I installed mine. There are updates available from the sony site for both UX40 and UX50. Why not try and see if one of those update might solve your problem? If not, I agree with djl, it most likely be your PC configuration. Good luck.
