#1 | | Guest | someone help a NX n00b. Please explain the Wireless connection to me. Ok, I know about the wireless card for NX series. Now, If I get one, can I access the internet while I am on the street or do I have to be near some sort of access point? I mean, I dont want to buy it if I can only use it if I am inside of my house.
What additional equipment will I need? | |

| You will need to be within a 100 to 300 meters of an access point. So yes it's mostly meant for in the house or in the office roaming. Besides the wireles card you'll also need a LAN, an access point hooked op to that LAN or a wireless adapter hooked up to a PC with routing capabilities (Windows XP and perhaps Windows2K)
That was enough for me. I like being able to get the tv guide from internet while sittin gon the couch. Or looking up a question without going to my PC. OK so I love gadgets and their magic, but I would guess most NX owners do.

| Apparently so yes. (I'm from the Netherlands and never been in a starbucks) Actually there are some initiatives to roll out public wireless acces points. You would need a subscription for accessing the internet on a public access point though. |

| There are settings that you can use to have a generic "roam" link that some people have used in various public places to connect. This is usually great in a big city (heard good in NY, etc) and a couple of people have connected in places like Drs' offices. Mostly this is just by chance. Also, I believe that Starbucks requires a subscription ($). There have been quite a few discussions about this in other threads.
I have my Wireless LAN installed in my apartment and love it, but like ragermac said, this is kinda for those who love the magic...and the chance of the convenience.

| Some can also use their cellular phone, via bluetooth, infrared, or direct cable.
You can peruse the wireless forum for further info.

| Bluetooth does not work with an 802.11b wireless LAN nor does it have the range. Bluetooth is more appropriate to use amongst devices, like phones and such.

| I think of Bluetooth kinda like "glorified" IR Beaming. If two devices have bluetooth capabilitites (specific installed or periperial component) they can talk to each other. (ie clie with printer or wireless headset with cell phone)
More and more devices like video cameras are coming with them as part of their internal hardware......guess you could compare it to the old days when modems were external vs internal. Bluetooth can be external on some older components.
This will be a cool thing as more components have it standard...
Does this make sense? *crosses fingers*
