is this an alternative for pidirect? i'm not sure if i understand correctly, i'm trying to free ram and run apps off my ms like avantgo, dictionary, and my bible off the ms. is it possible and if it is i greatly appreciate it if someone can help me.

no, launcher x is just like any other launcher. It moves the app itself to MS and no database or other related files. The person who said that may have just been lucky and only used apps contained in a single file. The person saying that doesn't have any apps in RAM anymore is obviously an exaggeration? LauncherX is apparently in RAM. Powerrun easily does all this stuff he claims launcherx to do automatically without having to create your own shortcuts, etc. I am currently working on a thorough comparison of all major launchers and I have not found launcherx to be any more beneficial than other launchers when moving apps to MS. Powerrun is where it is at.

I used LX (past tense) and can tell you it does move apps to MS just great; drag and drop em. It did NOT synch any app needing a conduit that I use, specifically Bonsai, Daynotez, or Vindingo.

Powerrun will synch apps needing conduits? I was under the impression that it did not.

Actually, it is true, but it only works with one particular setup.

To do it, you need to:

a) Using the Card Tools icon to drag an app to the MS (don't need to do this step if the file is already in the /Palm/Launcher folder). This will make an icon in LX with a small MS icon shown on it.

b) Drag the new icon to the Card Tools icon, and choose to create shortcut. This will create a "shortcut" for the app in RAM. This shortcut is probably of no use to you as far as launching goes, so you may want to move it to a hidden tab in LX.

c) Now, as long as the databases for this app are stored in RAM, it will still update them on a hotsync, because the shortcut tricks the conduit into thinking that the app is still in RAM. Normally, for apps stored on the MS, the conduit thinks the app is gone so it won't bother updating it's databases.

With PowerRun, it works a little differently. PowerRun gives you the option of putting the database on the MS too. It also creates a shortcut in RAM, so the conduit will see the shortcut and place a completely new version of the database in RAM during a hotsync. When you next run this app using PowerRun, it will notice that the database in RAM is newer than the database on the MS, so it won't copy the database over. It will allow the app to run with the newer database, then upon exit, will move both the app and the database back to the MS, so the newer database will overwrite the old database at this time.

The key differences are that:

a) If the database on the handheld contains updates, the PowerRun method will not sync them back to the desktop. Therefore, the PowerRun method is primarily good for databases that are read-only, such as AvantGo files.

b) With the LX method, the database files are always stored in RAM, so you don't get to save space by moving them to the MS. However, you do save space over the normal setup because the app is moved to the MS.

Question for you - I'm cool with creating the folder but no longer use LX; I use the launcher it came with. If I do that, using the imbedded launcher, will I get the shortcut?

No, the default launcher does not create a shortcut at all. ZL does create a shortcut, but it's different than the LX version and doesn't work for doing stuff like this.

Yep. If you don't feel like using LX, you can load it, create all the shortcuts you want, then delete it again. The shortcuts will be maintained. Of course, if you want to add additional shortcuts in the future, you'll need to repeat the process.

Or you can keep LX loaded via PowerRun and start it up exclusively for that specific purpose
