Clie- still the Winner, Sony- the Great Loser

Greetings,
With the many floating threads that have been posted about the USA Clie demise, the fact still remains same that the late model Clie device is a fine product as it stands. There is still life in this great handheld and keeping it for the current uses will not render it obsolete down the road. Sure it needed some updates or some hacks (NetFront3.1) to keep it fluid with today's growing SSL secured site browsing, but as a group in this Forum (ClieSource!!) we (you) managed to make the work around to make the Clie greater then the Manufactures allow it to be, without Sony support. This displays determination between us working to Help each other get beyond Sony's lack of power/interest to make the Clie greater for our own needs.

Sony's lack of help to push more improvements into the untapped Clie line, proves that they hung their self out to dry and committed Hara-kiri for all the US public to see. This alone makes Sony the Corporation the Great Loser. Shame to the living Sony executive that helped the Clie demise.

Shouts outs to the members who made ClieSource great with positive contributions, to just name a few I came across: Madmaxmedia, Amoon, Winexprt and Wytnucls. We (I) learned so much together and the Clie was the focal point in bring this forum and the member's minds together. This bond makes the real Power behind making the Clie greater then when it was produced.

The Clie device and it's users will always be a winner, .... Sorry Charlie*, you are the loser.

Thank you, Vision

I think that the long term viability of the present Clie's is largely depedant on how well OS 6 does in the market. If OS 6 is successful, there will be a smaller and smaller number of developers coming out with any new pre-OS 6 products. Since there seems to be no chance that Sony will produce or offer and upgrade to OS 6, the Clie will become increasingly marginalized in the long term, especially since developers have to do so many tweaks to make programs work with the Clie's non-standard OS changes.

Of course, if OS 6 doesn't do well, the whole issue of the Palm OS may become a moot point in a few years.

I grant that, but restate: as the Clie is currently used right now it is still useful until new formats are adopted. I don't see an replacement in the wings for a new Calendar or a Phone book that will not Sync up the current one. The real threat is Palm it's self, imagine if they offered Trade in recalls for Palms and remove the 4.1 palm desktop - Hot sync conduit from Download page and didn't put it in the archives to spite Sony for not renewing their licensing with Palm.

Yes if OS 6 is as radical as they say and positive, that does changes how and what OS developers makes programs for. If you don't change with them and keep stationary with all your applications you are still good to go (there are still people using Mac OS9 on a G4 or people still using Windows 3.1 on their Pentium MMX PRO).

Right back at ya Brother!

We sure did have a great time over there on CS. I just hope this new place can be half as good and fun as CS was!

Here's to the future!!

I agree that, even without future development, the Clie platform is still good for what it does. With KeySuite, Netfront and a decent email app it's good for my needs for a few years yet.

And Palm could well remove their apps for download by Clie users, but that's hardly likely to spite Sony, since Sony couldn't care less about the PDA market. All it will do is lose them the sympathy of possible future upgraders. I, for one, would go to PPC if I had to upgrade if Palm pulled such a stunt.

Why so glum? Look at what we CLIE users still have to look forward to!

- Discussing how Palm's T4 is STILL not as good as our 2 year old clies

- Figuring out how to convert the UX-80 to english OS/keyboard (replace the keys from our UX-50s???)

- Seeing any new PALM OS licensees (Dell, HP?)

- SOFTWARE!

There will be an upgrade to OS6 for the CLIEs.
Sony has already stated that they will continue support for their current models.
Only "problem" will be that those SW upgrades will be in Japanese, Chinese and only be (very) slowly ported to English, German, etc. since only the Asian market will still be an active one.

Thanks for the shoutout Vision!

Cliesource is really one of the best user forums I have ever participated in- very friendly and always informative, so I always tried to return the favor whenever possible. People here are into their CLIE's, but not so dour and serious about it like (some) other sites. All the apps and hacks and general knowledge shared here has made our CLIE's WAY more functional and useful, and come to think of it have largely overcome Sony's deficiencies (no updates, poor CF support, etc.) Without Cliesource I would also never have found programs like KeyQuick or MSMount (let alone learn how to use it!!!)

I was a little sad to see Cliesource get folded into 1src, but it doesn't really matter. I think there will still be a large CLIE user base here for a long time, heck there are still sites out there about Psion Revo's and other discontinued products.

I think the PDA is going through changes, but will not go the way of the dodo. In a few years when WiMax is rolled out, I think PDA's might make a resurgence. And hopefully Sony will continue to bring out new models in Japan that can be modded and imported. If they ever really hit the right note with a future model, they may re-consider launching it in other countries.

Just a quick reply,
If we were to Support the gray market trade of the Clie into the USA, it would only serve the Asian market in boasting sales, thus justifying Sony's Marketing strategy ....seeing much higher numbers up in their region.

Vision, I hear you!

To date, The TH55 is the most good looking "Organizer" out there. IMO
