Post How Palm got Cool Again

Somwhat revealing business insight into Hawkins's boomerang career and the products he helped shape.

How Palm Got Cool Again
The company created the handheld computer market, then sank into a miasma of infighting. But a little gadget called the Treo has given it a lifeline.

On a foggy day in the fall of 2001, the top executives of Handspring gathered in a drab conference room at a hotel in Monterey, Calif. The mood was tense, the debate heated. The company, co-founded three years earlier by Jeff Hawkins -- the inventor of the Palm Pilot personal digital assistant, who had quit Palm (PLMO) in 1998 after a feud with his boss -- was being hammered by the tech bust. Its Visor PDA had been a critical success, but the company was bleeding cash. It was down to just enough money to turn out a few more versions of the Visor, which many in the room argued could still be a hit and save the company. Yet here was Hawkins, Handspring's chairman, lobbying for something that at the time seemed likely to finish off Handspring for good...
How Palm got Cool Again

I can't wait to see how a cool Palm based Smart Clie/phone from Sony revs up the market...

This fall???

Palm? Cool? Not yet. Palm was kinda geeky gool with the circular blue logo, but the very ugly red&orange Pa1mOne logo is only appealing to soccer moms IMHO. More than just the logo, the industrial design seems to be of a lower quality, the original Tungsten|T looks better than the T3 I think. Mini-USB ports make everything incompatable.

I think that the Palm One symbol is smooth on ma T E. Mini USB makes everything easier. Soon all peripherals will be mini usb ( maybe a year or two)

where i would like to see more of the future palm os :

smart phones -- some of the upcoming PPC smart phones are really neat.

another GPS integrated device

watch type of device. the fossil fizzled, and while the MSN Sunto and fossil are not all that great, at least they are something to build on for the next generation.

i love my nz90, but i also just bought a h4350, which frankly, for my needs, is a very good device. i'm really looking for a kick but smart phone next.

WTF? Anyways, Palm has a future as long as laptops stay as big and high priced as they are.

Thumbs down

PDADiddy what the heck are you talking about?
I just sold my entire Handspring setup, that had cost me originally over $1000.-- for under $200.--
Yes I know the techno progress has some part in this, but fact is that I'd rather would have kept my Visor Prism.
I had sound, video, everything for it.
But fact is that with Handspring dead in the water, so was the Springboard technology, which got me hooked on their device in the 1st place.
That idiotic smartphone was the greatest blunder of them ever. What a stupid concept !!
Just like the internet access via home TV that never took off.
You can not watch a movie and browse the Internet at the same time on the same device any more than you can make a phone call and look up some PIM data on the same device at the same time!
Imagine this! While I'm calling the customer on my PDA phone to tell them I'm running late on the highway, I try to look up my GPS info at the same time on the same device, oh and yes also get that spreadsheet up to date.
I hope that traffic judge who gets to "judge" me would take my PDA away as a first step back to sanity.
I want my microwave to microwave, not do my laundry , too.
And I want my cell phone to be as good a phone as they come, but not try to do my spreadsheets on the road or run a video.
One functionallity gets in the way of the other and my nightmare scenario is having to get the stylus out to do a reset all the time because that latest hack installed just doesn't agree with my calling plan

What you say makes sense, but lately smart phones have gotten more and more popular because people want the convinience of having one device that does three things rather than three seperate devices. As long as people like you and me are around, the smartphones won't overtake palms

I don't like smarphone... been tempted by Xplore but still stick with my UX. I like my SE630 and would upgrade to the new one with more features but at least I don't have to dump my PDA just because I want to upgrade my mobile.

Your not alone with not liking smartphones. I rather carry a palm and phone.

Exactly what I think. What would you rather have? A Lo-Res screen as big as my old M130. Or a nice phone and a PDA with Wifi and BT that can play videos and games, along with surfing the web with a bigger screen?

I respectfully disagree. I think many of us would like to, as someone put it, 'just carry around one device'. My kitchen doesn't need a microwave/fridge/TV all-in-one combo because it's rather spacious enough for all three. The same can't be said for my pocket space.

Who is really going to be checking their email while talking on the phone while inputting a new entry in their schedule while driving, anyway? Sorry, but no one is THAT busy. If you are, then it might be time to ditch the "Digital" part of "Personal Assistants"...

I, for one, would be dumping my 'dumb' phone in a second, if I could just hold my NX80 up to my ear and talk! (Try it--closed, it doesn't feel too awkward )
