Sadly this is true for many computer products, any non US version of the hardware usually get either none or very slow updates to their european version of the hardware...
I don't think the updates for the TJ37/U works on the european models, I heard someone try it but it won't install properly on the european clies... |

| In another thread on this website, United States Sony Support was quoted as saying that you can try installing the US Clie version of the update, but they don't promise results, and they STRONGLY recommend a full backup of the handheld before proceeding. Hope you get it working!
Cheers,
Brady

| My 2 cents.
I bought my tj37 a few weeks ago. Once I got the right settings (with a little help from snoslicer). My problems, not the machine or the help. No problems with wi-fi, and I have yet to install the patch (which I will do soon).
Surfing the net and Hot synching. Using Lynksis router "b".
I'm hardly a techie. Maybe they should have taken it to the real world and tried it, perhaps the "experts" may have had as much success as this middle-aged non techie average user has had.
If they wanted to knock it, a real review would have talked about the battery. I just charge it more often. Big deal. I don't think so.

| Now someone slammed me, funny stuff... Well,
I got slammed by someone over there who tried to get my BP up. He needs to try harder to accomplish that.
Anyway, I did get a reply in this thread: http://discuss.pcmag.com/n/mb/messa...mag&msg=38428.1
Where they state: Quote:
I checked with the team that reviews that type of product. The reviewer (an experienced employee in PC Magazine's Labs) identified the problems with wireless and brought in the Labs Technical Director. He confirmed the difficulty, and they both spent hours on the phone with Sony, but the problems were not resolved. They do stress-test the products to make sure they operate in various environments. You may have just been lucky in your connections.
Sony did release a patch last month, well after the reported testing."
|
Note it says THEY BOTH spent Hours on the Phone. I find this difficult to believe myslef, but if they say it, it must be true, huh.
Maybe someone from sony, or someone who has a contact there can verify that one.
I still say it was a biased review, and amateur at best.
Many members in here could have written a better review, and we have seen those reviews within this forum.
Oh yeah, did you see the last quote:
"You may have just been lucky in your connections."
No, I followed the directions given to me in the manual, and guess what PCMag, it worked for me. It wasn't luck, it was following directions.
Regards,
Joe |

| Sonar5,
You maybe came on a bit hard with your choice of words. Might be they had a defected unit while doing the review, I'd suppose the PCmag guys know how to make the settings. They failed however to test a second unit or a different AP just to be sure.
Spending two hours with Sony help desk does not surprise me the least. I just wrote an E-mail to the local help desk about the inability to use WEP, they replied that they are not familiar with Clie products. In fact, they advised me to turn to www.vaio-link.com for further assistance!
Later they did apologize for that one...

| I have a Linksys 80211g as well. Works perfectly. As with anything it's up to the user to have his/her hardware up to date with drivers and updates, in order for things to work properly. |

I don't know where they get this stuff, but I think they just have a problem with Sony coming up with some great ideas.

| Another double-negative for the Zire72:
There's no Universal Connector! Are these designers on CRACK?! How much more expensive would it be to throw in a Universal connector with USB-charger dongle?

#24 | | Guest | m a proud user of tj37. great design, value for money.
i agree that tj37 is far better than zire both in design and feature.
But, i do encounter some connection problem with wifi connection. at times, it works perfectly, but sometimes it just hang and return with an error message "Invalid network setting".

Yeah, flood Sony's tech support email address with complaints until they come up with a fix!

| Invalid Network Settings with SMC Router Well I just have to chime in with my experience so far...
I have an SMC 802.11G router and I am constantly getting "Invalid Network Settings" on certain sites. Once this happens ONLY a hard reset of the router can clear it up.
I'm sure it's my router, since the clie worked fine on a trip over the weekend at a hotel. Kinda of a let down, since I'm a 3 generation clie owner.
BTW I have applied all the updates, disabled power save mode, updated my router's firmware, placed it in 802.11b mode only.... and sprinkled pixie dust on it.
Has anyone else experienced these symptoms? |

| You need to make sure that your router doesn't have an "access list" where it only allows certain MAC addresses to connect. There should be a setting for this somewhere on your router's admin page, obviously you know how to access that if you've upgraded the firmware. Anyways, check to make sure that this type of access restriction is gone (if you need restriction, consider using WEP Keys). Most routers won't connect to Clie's when they have this type of connection preferencing enabled.
Cheers,
Brady
