I'll be perfectly honest with you...

in *my* opinion, the only thing that the NZ90 is lacking is more RAM.

That being said, those who have experience using things like PowerRun and the like, which one is best ? What are the pros and cons ? Some software cannot run with the MS ? Will the new MS Pro sticks make it so that it takes less than 5 seconds to load up some larger software ?

Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks !

don't have experience with powerrun, pidirect. i am using zlauncher which offers my also the opportunity to move apps to the stick; might be slower and also might still need to load the apps to ram first; but it is working with most apps. i have some apps always in ram (agendus amongst others). games and apps which i do not use frequently (cliepaint etc.) i could transfer to the stick without a problem.

All I use is Z-Launcher on my NX. Programs only take a second to load. Most software runs fine from the Memory Stick. Whether the MS Pro will be any faster is questionable.

I find Launcher X to be the best solution for MS Apps.

Before Launcher X, I could put any app I used onto the Memory Stick, EXCEPT the apps that need to hotsync with a conduit on my desktop.

Now, with shortcut files, even apps on the Memory Stick can hotsync with a conduit now. I don't have any apps in RAM anymore.

I've been unable to get apps with conduits to sync with the computer from the MS with ZLauncher. I was actually thinking about starting a thread on the subject, but now I just think I'll hijack this one.

The shortcut idea seems like it could work, but ZLauncher doesn't create true shortcuts, from what I've gathered. Maybe you could do that if you wanted to, but I was actually enjoying the shortcutless thing.

Apps with conduits will not ever sync if they are on the MS.


Also, as concerns memory, I was just talking to a friend at PalmSource today. Palm OS 5 as shipped by PalmSource to the OEMs like Sony only supports 16 MB of ROM and 16 MB of RAM. This is a legacy from OS4 and just hasn't been changed. Running on ARM processors, the 32 MB limit is gone, but the limit remains.

However, Garmin changed it in their new GPS PDA (the name escapes me). They modified the OS to allow a full 32 MB of addressable memory. My friend assures me that this is fine and has been expected. At some point PalmSource will undoubtedly add the change to the base OS just like they have added other changes made by OEMs in the past. However, for today the OS is limited to 16 MB unless the OS is specifically changed to allow more.

This is not entirely accurate. As mentioned by big_raji, when using the shortcut "stubs" in LX (and it's predecessor LIII), the applications will sync with conduits even though they are located on the external memory card. This is because of the stub shortcuts which are different than the "pointers" used by the other launchers.

Obviously, these stub files must be in RAM, but they are very small and the application resides on the external memory card.

Right - that is what I am saying. Both of those apps make the OS think there is something in RAM. In the case of the stubs, there is an app in RAM that the OS thinks is the real app.

But the OS have to support the ability to address more memory, expandible media... but that might be a VFS component... so why doesn't Sony include a 16Mb RAM and 64MB High speed built in memory unit addressed by VFS?

Knowing Sony, this model won't last for long because there are SO MANY updates that will be included in OS 5.1 or 5.2, and sony rarely releases updates for thier devices. Sucks but if you got a Best Buy or Circuit City service plan it means upgrading is much easier

You know, I was thinking the same thing. Since the newer units basicly require a Memory Stick to do MP3's, video and Flash, they should build in like 32 or 64 MB of Flash memory accessable through VFS.
