Hi, it's pretty easy really.

I'm using a 2.6.4 kernel, but it should be the same generally for all other kernels. (I used to do this on 2.4)

I'll assume you've got all the USB stuff you need to hotsync in the kernel or as modules, you'll also need vfat and the usb storage stuff. If you're making this youself that will turn on SCSI support (USB Storage devices appear as SCSI devices).

Now, once all this is loaded you want to connect up the clie, go to the Data Import (or MSImport?) app and connect.

If you look in /var/log/syslog hopefully you should see something about usb_storage and it should tell you a device name along the lines of sda1 (it may not be sda1 if you have other scsi devices).

Now all you need to do is, as root, type:

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mountpoint

replacing sda1 with whatever one it tells you in syslog, and mountpoint with the place you want it to appear.

I've put this line in my /etc/fstab:

/dev/sda1 /ms vfat user

So all I have to do is type mount /ms and it'll mount on /ms. I also used to have it automatically mount using hotplug, but given my understanding of hotplug that was probably a complete fluke.

One thing to watch is that once you've copied your files across, make sure you umount it from the computer first, as it doesn't sync all the data until the unmount, then once that's finished you can hit the "disconnect" button on the clie.

Hope that helps!

Yup. Assuming you have a modern kernel...
Plug in the USB cable, start PCLink (Setting/Prefs/StatusInfo/Memory Stick/PC Link), mount as a drive (check output of dmesg to see what/where the Clie is identified), then cp, run MC, or use your GUI tools to move your data.
I get chmod/chown errors with MC, but that's not a problem.
To disconnect, I umount the drive, then Disconnect.

I seem to remember reading something about 2.6.x kernels having troubles with some clies, I'll try to check when my box is not so busy.

Slackware 9.1 and Knoppix LiveCD work well for me. Maybe try a 2.4.x kernel or a LiveCD?

Hmm, my brand spanking new TH55 is recognised as:

Vendor: Sony Model: CLIE MGMS Rev: 1.00
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

So perhaps it is an issue with certain clies and the kernel...

Any chance of seeing some of the output from dmesg?

Hmm, you seem to be using devfs which will mean you won't see /dev/sd*...

I don't know too much about devfs, so I'm not sure where the device file should be, probably something like /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disk

when you've got the clie attached the device it uses should appear automatically, but it will probably be hidden away in /dev/scsi/ somewhere...

Sorry, I can't be more accurate, anyone else got any idea?

Question

je suis en 2.6.3, avec un TJ35.

quand je connecte DataImport, j'ai ça dans /proc/bus/usb/devices :
T: Bus=04 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 26 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=054c ProdID=016a Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=Sony
S: Product=Sony PEG Mass Storage
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 0mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=05 Prot=00 Driver=usb-storage
E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=83(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 32 Ivl=1ms

dans dmesg, y me met ça :
usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using address 26
scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
WARNING: USB Mass Storage data integrity not assured
USB Mass Storage device found at 26

mais par contre, dans /dev, y a aucun device créé.

une idée ?
