Connecting to T-Mobile using irDA port.

OK this isn't for me but for a friend of mine who has the PEG-TJ37. She also has T-Mobile with unlimited internet access. Her phone model is the Samsung SGH-V200 which has an irDA port. I wanted to know if there was a way that she could go online with her Clie (TJ37) using her phone (V200) via irDA. If there is a way can someone please show me how to configure the Clie to work with her phone? Thanks I appreciate any help.

I have used both the IR port on my phone and a bluetooth memory stick in my Clie to connect my Clie to the internet. Your friend will need to subscribe to the data service through T-Mobile. I believe it is $19.99/month for unlimited access.

As far as setup instructions just search this site for the information. There are numerous posts relating to setup instructions.

do not bother with IR internet through a phone as it is too slow to be worth it. if your phone already has internet through t-zones, it is best that you just use that service.

go with bluetooth if you can. i as well am currently in the market for a bluetooth-able phone.

I would agree IR is slow but for email and BASIC web browsing it is acceptable if bluetooth is not an option or the BT memorystick price of $150 - $200 is out of your price range.

I used IR as my sole means of connecting my Clie to the internet for about 1 year before switching to bluetooth. I mostly used it for email and weather forecasts.

OK She already has the unlimited internet data plan on her phone I believe so thats one. I was doing some searching yesterday and was not able to find anything. She is only going to connect online to check her mail, basic browsing and looking up stock quotes so i think its fit for her. However if she could get a bluetooth adapter for her phone it would work out better cause I think the PEG-TJ37 has built-in bluetooth all she needs is a blue tooth enabled phone or an adapter for her phone if there are any available. If anyone knows if there is a bluetooth adapter for her phone the Samsung V200 please let me know. I am sure she would purchase it cause she wants to be able to go online at work but our job doesnt have a wireless network in place. She can go online at home cause I set up a wireless network for her at home but for work the only solution is her T-Mobile phone. I appreciate any help. Thanks everyone.

OK my fault the PEG-TJ37 does not have built-in bluetooth but thats not the point in this post anyways. Today I was messing around with her Clie and we got the phone to act as a modem to dial a number, however since we didn't have an ISP set-up and no dial up numbers that didn't work but atleast we do know that the irDA ports are working and communication exitsts amongst the 2 devices. Now the only thing that I need is instructions on how to setup the TJ37 to connect to T-Mobile via irDA. If anyone knows how to or knows of a post that explains it, please post instructions or thread link. Any help is truly appreciated. Thanks.

This post should help a lot. Towards the middle of the thread there is a post by Swinter that explains the steps:

Finally got it to work. After a week of online research, 2 tideous hours and 4 different representatives with T-Mobile Wireless Data Technical Support we finally got it to work and I figured it out. We tried all sorts of different things. We tried connecting as a PC, Modem and Local Network, tried 3 different scripts and 2 numbers to dial. I don't remember which one was the script that worked since I was doing this at work with my co-worker and gave her all the paper work afterwards but it was a short script unlike many of the ones i have seen posted but very similar. If I get the script I will post it. The number *99***(CID)# is only for Sony Erricson T306 so that wasnt working. The number we tried instead was *99# and we put connect to modem via infrared. We were establishing connections because we signed in and everything but we were unable to browse and we were gettging an error saying "invalid network settings". As the T-Mobile rep was looking for another solution to the problem I decided to go into the browsers settings. It was in these settings that I noticed something odd. There was a checkmark next to PROXY. Now I knew that PROXY usually had to do with some security setting like if you were behind a firewall or something. (Im not sure since I am not a computer super genius) I asked the rep if there should be a checkmark on there, instead he told me to hold cause he was looking into an alternate way to get this to work. I decided to uncheck PROXY, went back to the browser, typed in www.google.com and VIOLA! It came up on the screen. I just hope I bever have to go through this again. We did have to change her plan to the UNLIMITED WIRELESS DATA PLAN for $19.99 a month and we got rid fo the UNLIMITED T-ZONES PLAN since this new plan included T-Zones. The only odd thing that we noticed, after changing her data plan, we tried to go into T-Zones on the bottom of the screen it would always display the workds GPRS as it would log-in or load a page. Now it displays GPRS for about 5 seconds and then the words GPRS are replaced with a little cell phone icon. The t-zones background graphic keeps flashing on the screen and it doesnt connect to T-Zones. I though that was odd. If anyone has experienced this, please let me know.
