| Problems with N710C and TH55 I haven't seen this post out there. For those of you owners with the Clie N710C who are thinking about getting the TH55 consider this.
The N710C is NOT COMPATIBLE with the new Palm Desktop for Clie (ver 4.1) that comes with the TH55. You will not be able to sync the N710C whatsoever.
It's nice that the manual tells N710C owners to look at the sony.com support website for help with the Palmdesktop. Unfortunately, there is NO INFO there to help out. After 2 hours with 1st level and 2nd level tech support people, we come to the wonderful conclusion that the N710C is not supported by the new Palmdesktop and Hotsync. And they do not know if and when a patch will be created to fix this problem.
I was hoping to give the N710C to my wife to use, since she's using the Palm Vx, and I'd be using the wonderful (IMHO) TH55. Now the only solution (to sync the N710C) would be to flip installing/unstalling the new and old palmdesktops on our one and only computer, or get a second computer just to keep the old version of palmdesktpo on to back up the N710C and TH55.
To add to this nightmare... my TH55 does not have a reset button. Peering into the tiny hole, all I see is white plastic and some metal contacts. What the frick?! So now I'm taking the lesser of 2 evils by sending the unit back to sony (via their pre-paid packing), vs. trying to go back to the seller (ecost.com) to get a new unit (where I'd have to pay to sent the unit back). I think more than likely, sony would send me a new replacement unit. I cannot see them trying to open it up and try to fix on a new reset button... I hope.
If there is anyone out there sharing one of these unbelievable events please post it. I'd like to hear. Thanks. |

| Is it possible to have the new desktop installed in a different folder so that you can continue using both in the same computer?

It takes me a couple of stabs to hit it, but I definitely have one.
I coudn't get my S320 to work (for long, anyway) with the new Palm Desktop. Luckily, I think this is something Sony may fix. It would just involve updating the HotSync Manager, I believe.

| A different folder is an interesting idea. But would there be a conflict with registries and other things like that hidden within the deep confines of Windows? And then I wonder if windows would be able to properly uninstall the old desktop when (or if) Sony comes out with a patch.
I would like to believe that sony would come out with a patch soon, especially since they specifically mention the N710C (and another model) in the Read Me First Manual.
Anyway, I'm going to write to sony and complain about the issue. The tech support person gave me the address to Sony CISC for complaints. I can post it if anyone wants. Just don't have on me at work. |

| The reset button definitely has a 'technique'. Trust me, I'm probably wearing it out with my alarm reset issue.
If you hold your TH up facing you, and insert the tip of the stylus into the slot (not the screw slot next to it, which I constantly do when I'm not looking closely), then pull the stylus bottom toward you, effectively levering the tip in there towards the back. You can always get a reset this way. |

| My wife still has her N610 and I have my TH55 and they both sync just fine. I installed both Palm Desktops on top of eachother, it still runs the later version, but by installing the older version, it at least installed the drivers for hers. |

| Miss Clie - I'll try your technique when I get home (don't have it handy now)... but I did try every which way to insert that stylus and nothing, nada, no reset.
Would people tell me what you see when you peer through that little hole they call the reset button. All I saw was white with bits of metal, which I assume to be some sort of metal contacts. Can anyone else confirm that? |

Good Evening-
Peloquin, this is very interesting since my wife has an n610c as well. Could you please describe your technique here in more detail? I would very much appreciate it.

| we use windows xp with seperate accounts, so that made things complex in and of itself, but basicaly, it was like this. I had just done a format and reinstall of the OS so we started completely clean (but I think you could get around this by removing all PalmDesktops and starting clean that way at least). I installed the software for the
TH-55 and when we switched users to her account, everything was there but when when I tried to sync hers, it said the driver wasn't found. So without doing anything to the currently installed palm software, I installed the palm desktop from, actually, my old N710C. When the software asked to overwrite anything, I vehemently said no. That way it installed new drivers, but didn't actually overwrite the new Palm Desktop.
Now aside from the fact that certain HotSync conduits don't seem to show up on both her account and mine, everything is working fine, but I think that's an XP issue. I hope this helps you with your problems. |
