Yes. It functions well with or without a GPS unit. I don't have one and Mapopolis came through big time when I was traveling.

Does anyone know where to get the older version of maps? Mapapolis site now only has the new version maps that do not work on the previous version of Mapapolis.

Mapopolis has one of the most difficult to navigate websites I've ever seen. And this from a GPS map navigation company!

To download the maps for the older Mapopolis 5.xx application, follow these instructions:
  1. Go to the Mapopolis Home page (www.mapopolis.com).
  2. On the center bottom of the Home page, click where it says Mapopolis Platinum. (There is an image of a T2.)
  3. On the page that displays, you have three choices for maps, as follows:

--Palm OS 5 PDA: These are the Navigator maps. Navigator 1.xx is the newer application and it only works on Palm OS5 and PocketPC.

--Palm OS 3 or 4 PDA: These are the maps that work on the older Mapopolis application. This older application will run on Palm OS 3, 4, or 5. It is simply called Mapopolis 5.xx. The maps have various names, but Platinum + GPS are the best for this application.

--PocketPC PDA: These are the maps for Navigator 4.xx that only runs on PocketPCs.

Select the Palm OS 3 or 4 PDA link.
  4. Select the map pack you want to order/download: You can choose from Platinum + GPS, Platinum (no GPS capability), Enhanced (no GPS capability), or Place Guide (no maps just points of interest to enhace your maps.
  5. Follow the onscreen prompts...

TH55 users need to contact Mapoplis

I received this note in an email from Lamar at Mapopolis:

"What you can do is get folks with this machine who want to run
Mapopolis natively on it to contact me and let me add them to
the request list. This is how a relatively low volume machine
like the UX-50 got on the list, and it's now supported."

So, if there are TH55 users out there who want to use the Mapop. Navigator, please send that request to support@mapopolis.com.

I've tried to run Navigator on TH55 other than screen size problem, it works very well.

GPS was up and running in less than 1 min. voice prompt was loud and clear (wish was a female voice instead). Directions was generated very quickly (compared to my old T665). I love the auto re-route feature as well.

Come on people, let email mapopolis and get them to update Mapopolis.

Good luck with that! Mapopolis has been promising the T3 users HiRes+ support since October, and they still haven't provided it.

BTW: Have you put the navigation features to the test yet? That is, got out on the highway to see how well Mapopolis Navigator does while routing? I know several UX users have complained about lag time of up to half a mile. Mapopolis recommends a minimum 200mhz processor, and the UX/TH have a 140mhz processor. I know my T2 with 144mhz processor had trouble keeping a GPS lock due to lack of processor speed--that is, the GPS stayed locked but Mapopolis Navigator couldn't function fast enough to keep the connection going between the T2 and the GPS. If you have problems with this and you are using a serial GPS mouse, you might try using a Bluetooth GPS instead. The BT GPS units tend to stay connected to slower Palms better than their serial mouse counterparts.

hey guys,
This is the msg. I just received from Mr. Lamar (the programer I guess). Looks like it is possible for them to update the program. let's start emailing.

Hello dragonknight

Hi, Paul,

Find me a bunch of people who'll write to support@mapopolis.com and
request TH55 support in the program (100 is a good number) and I can
justify asking the boss to buy one. We're not a big company, and contrary to
popular opinion at the website, we're not getting rich at this. Buying
another handheld is something we have to consider, and then there's the
programmer's time going into it...

Find me a bunch of folks that I can put on the list, and it'll
eventually happen... if only a few ask, we'll probably not put a priority on
it.

Take care,

Lamar @ mapopolis support

I have playing with their latest version of navigator 1.30b. I have say i love it. They added a new view option (3d bird's eye view) that is very good for driving.
Jack, I have been driving around town with navigator set on auto reroute. I have not find any lag between gps and Navigator.

What GPS and..

What GPS are you guys using and where did you get the cable? I picked up the Radio Shack PGS on clearance a few months ago in anticipation of a PDA with a T series connector.

I bought a custom built GPS that worked with my T665C Clie, since Th55 has the same connector, so I worked well for me. I know there are some webstore that sells all sorts of connector cable. do you serarch here on Cliesource... Also I think Mapapolis sells GPS with cables that can connect to any PDAs.

I recommend you guys just download and try the Navigator 1.30b. It is works great as it is, but with full screen support it will be awsome. Surely beats the $1000.00 stand alone GPS units.

HOLY CRAP!! Mapopolis is awesome!!! I haven't used it in a few years since I had my last PDA...but just downloaded Navigator 1.30 and - dragonknight is right - works flawlessley....will be even better when full screen is supported....I had no idea it gave turn by turn directions, looks up phone numbers and addresses of thousands of business/school/local government listing, etc etc..... AND - I found a cable-based GPS system that was made for Clie 'T' systems....I have an email in to the company now to see if it will work with the TH55 - or when they plan to make one....that way, bluetooth MD isn't needed
