#1 | | Guest | RUMOR: Sony to dump Palm OS, to create its own Sony OS Sorry can't reveal who I am, but I know many insiders at Sony. From what they told me, all I can say is that if TJ37, and the newer TH series, etc doesn't sell well, Sony is strongly considering to dump Palm OS, and perhaps create its own proprietary Sony OS. This way, it does not have to pay licensing fees to any 3rd company, and Sony can design things the way they want to..
People don't understand, Sony wants to dominate the PDA market, just like what the walkman and playstation has accomplished for them. It doesn't look good that Palm OS isn't as popular as it used to (e.g. its marketshare isn't as high as it used to be) ------- although it's extremely clear Sony will NOT adopt Pocket PC. It will make decisions to try to dominate the PDA market.
Hint: It's own Sony OS may have an OS core based on LINUX...
That's all for now..... | |

| I don't think it is unreasonable to suggest that Sony, like all other companies, is constantly reviewing its strategy and evaluating its options. The dominance of M$ is a real issue for Asian countries according to the press and a group of Asian countries are funding the development of an alternative to M$ OS for PCs. Also given that Sharp are using Linux does not preclude the option for Sony to consider this as a way to differentiate its products and offer what it believes is a better package. Remember in Europe Sony Ericsson have been very successful with Symbian for Smartphones - something that would have been difficult to achieve with Palm OS as this has only recently supported multi tasking.

| if sony makes its own OS i bet you can expect to pay lots of money for their software. they will either have their own software they will sell or charge devs lots of money to license the rights to sell.

| even if sony makes it's own OS, it will still be using many previously designed programming. there's only so many ways you can make something, especially on a PDA.

| If sony made its own OS, i think it would be 99% crap. Sony makes nice hardware, but a lot of the time they just miss it on software.

| Considering what junk their software like Sonic Stage is I hope they stay out of the PDA OS business.

| IMHO, Sony would first get out of the PDA market before launching a new one with another OS.
What would we run on it?

| i am not sure what sony can get out of creating a new OS given the costs associated with it. Palm has a big eveloper base and that is the reason many vendors lincense palm. if sony comes up with a new OS, then they should make it compatible with existing palm software so people are willing to upgrade..interesting thing is that "rumor" pointed to linux core...this is good because apple is said to be developing a linux PDA and there is an excellent sharp linux machine already in the market...perhaps some intelligent programmer could run the same software on all these machines!!
i hope one can tell me why i am allowed to post and reply and make new threads at my work but not on my home computer!!
tnx |

| No way would Sony switch one of the best things going for it. It would be like Stephen King deciding to write his next book in latin.

| Sony going solo on PDAs would be just like when Ginger left the Spice Girls thinking that she could do better on her own. In other words sucide..!!
In the PDA world you have two options: Pocket PC or Palm. If you go with something else, you are not gonna get as much software support as you could with either Pocket PC or Palm.
And by the way, the rumours I've been getting is that Sony has plans to buy PalmSource in the long run. I think that makes more sense, don't you think?
