Blinking Palm Logo

Every 3-4 days, my Clie N760C crashes and needs a major hard reset. Usually, it goes into a mode where the Palm logo just blinks on and off about once per second. There is nothing I can do except a hard reset.

Now, this usually happens in the evening, so I've set Backup Buddy to backup in the mid-afternoon, so I haven't lost too much information. But, it's a very annoying problem and was wondering if anyone else has encountered (and, hopefully, fixed) this.

I am running YiShow, PiDirect, and X-Master (with AfterBurner, Beam recieve, Crash, FontHack, McPhling, PopUp Time, Silence, StayOff, and TechSounds hacks). Plus, I have programs that use the Sync conduit, like Docs to Go, Avantage, and Time Copy.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

When you do a hard reset, do you still have the problem? Try it for a day and tell me.

Are you using any particular software when that happens?

If you do....It could be...and I say could be...a loose board. I don't know if this happens in new Palm OS devices, but my old old old old old Palm Pro had a problem where when it was shook or tilted a lot it started flashing the logo and reseting itself. Does it happen when you shake it or tilt it very much?

It's probaly not that type of problem, it is probaly something wrong with the software. But still, try the hard reset thing and tell me the results.

> When you do a hard reset, do you still have the problem?

Yes. I do a hard reset and restore all my files. Then, about 3-4 days later, it crashes again.

> Are you using any particular software when that happens?

Nope. It varies. This last time it was WWCalc. Before that it was iSilo. The time before it was an unknown program that was randomly selected when the case pressed the screen. Once it was when I inserted a different memory stick. Most of the time it seems to occur as I am exiting from a program.

And, I might note, I can run all of those programs without incident 99% of the time.

> Does it happen when you shake it or tilt it very much?

I don't think so. Usually the Clie is just sitting in my palm and I am tapping away at the screen.

That's what I am figuring.

> But still, try the hard reset thing and tell me the results.

Well, because of the crashes, I do do a hard reset once a week or so.

Hmm...when you say after the hard reset it works for 3-4 days, then crashes, when it crashes, is there any other software you installed on the Palm? Or is it clean with nothing on it?

Did this start happening recently? Or have you had this sonce you got it?

You may want to try disabling your hacks and see if it crashes.

If is still under warranty, call up Sony. Even if it is not, maybe you can call them and ask if they have heard of such a problem.

Of course. Whenever it needs a hard reset, I reset it and then do a complete restore from Memory Stick. It takes about 20 minutes to put everything back the way it was at my most recent backup.

> Or is it clean with nothing on it?

Heh. If it had nothing on it, I suppose I wouldn't be using it.

Lately, it has beeing doing that about once a week. Previously, it only did that once every other month.

Well, that's kinda why I'm posting. I was hoping that other people had this problem and already went through the business of disabling this or that application to see if it fixed things.

The difficulty I see is that if I disable one specific hack, and the Clie doesn't crash for a week, have I really isolated the problem? Not really, because wouldn't know whether I had disabled the errant hack or whether the Clie was just behaving for an unusually long time.

I am fairly certain this is quite common. I often get this when exiting Planetarium. In fact that program was the only one that had a blinking palm screen of death on a consistent basis. But I have had other programs that this has happened on. I can usually tell when this is going to happen, it has happened to me so many times. Usually if I exit a program or start one and the screen becomes white or mostly white withthe possible exception of the Graffiti area, I have to soft reset and I get the blinking Palm Screen of death.

BTW, I have FontHack123 and PiDirect II installed (I also have Jot but I got the blinking palm screen of death (BPSoD) before I got that).

I had the same problem using my old 625. At one point I just did a hard reset and just hotsynced (Restored system databese), then I copied all PRC files back to RAM (from my previous backup). Then, when a program asked for a database, I would only copy back this single database. After less than an hour I had all programs running again and the crash problem was gone!

Hmm. Yes, I have FontHack and Pidirect both running. What font do you use? I am using the OS5 font.

I like the idea of copying just the PRC files.

Thanks!
