 | Memory Stick Hack
Can someone help me out? I don't have a small enough memory stick to hack open without worrying about losing like 50$ worth of memory. If you have an 8mb or 16mb that you don't use, would you mind opening it up carefully, make sure you are grounded and hm... don't even touch the chip inside... but tell me the part number of the chip? Also try to read off the manufacturer...

I'm wondering if the "Memory Stick" is simply a packaged Flash chip sold by Intel or AMD. In that case... I have a way of getting larger capacity flash chips easily... |

| nope ive got a lexar see thro MS, and its made by samsung, and sony wouldnt make that kind of mistake, they like making cash out of the fact they are made by sony

It is NOT Sony-made silicon, I can tell you that much.

| Hi, i have done this a few days ago, cos i was trying to fix my Aibo memory stick (it is stuck as read only!!!)here i have pics of both a normal 8mb MS and the Aibo 8mb ms
Both still work, and are made by sony!
The bottom one (the dark green one) is the normal one
The smaller square chip is made by sony, but the larger rectangle chip is made by Samsung   | |

That's about it....
The square chip is the controller it is essentially a simple embedded CPU with a small amount of RAM. It takes the serial memory stick protocol and interfaces it to relatively standard flash chips.
There are also a few different flavors of the square chip (all made by Sony AFAIK). There are differences for white sticks and of course MS Pro sticks.
I've seen a few different manufacturers of the flash chips (the rectangular one).

FWIW: it isn't that easy. Even if you could find the larger size parts, and remove and resolder the surface mount parts, there are also low level format issues on the memory sticks.

It is a good thing to do before touching any electronics with exposed metal. | |
