| Had the lock up, soft reset and everything gone problem again today. Here is what happened:
I put my hand in my jacket pocket to retrieve my clie and accidentally pushed the memory stick, so it popped out. Without thinking, I pushed it back in, and then...well, you know the story.... it wouldn't turn back on!!!! I soft reset it and everything was gone.
Since this lock up/hard reset issue started back in December I have had this exact type of problem happen to me a few times. I am now in the habit of always having my clie on when inserting a memory stick (except today obiously), so it hadn't happened to me in quite some time (at least a month).
*****RANT****** Why does the year have to reset to 1900!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*********** |

| Others, even some within this thread, have reproduced this hard reset without memory sticks in the pda. Perhaps what you are describing is a different problem. It would be much easier to discuss this problem if we could put accidents with memory sticks out of the picture. |

| I think there are clearly two different issues here. First of all, I am certain that the auto-lock feature was causing my clie to reset. It _may_ be that something else was conflicting with autolock, but it is diffinately related to autolock. Disabling autolock allowed me to become sane again.
Secondly, I believe there is an issue with memory sticks. Check out this thread: http://www.cliesource.com/forums/sh...ight=aeroplayer
I read about other people having trouble with the memory sticks locking up there Clie in another post too, but I can't find it right now.
Lastly, although these may be issues, I know longer consider them as severe. I am able to use my clie without it reseting on me - and thats the most important thing! A month ago before I had identified these two issues, I was nearly ready to buy a Windows CE device (shudder). |

| [almost] CURE ALL FOR PALM OS I cant post new threads so will someone please post this somewhere obvious? Thanks.
So here goes.
I was tinkering with my palm, and im the type of person who puts 1000000's of apps on it, so it started messing up.
I was toying with what files i could delete and fix the problem, when i stumbled on one that just about fixed every software conflict ive ever had.
here are the steps:
1) hotsync or otherwise back up your device.
2) find the backup directory
3) find the file called "saved_prefs.prc" (or something like that)
4) delete it
5) hard - reset your device
6) hot sync/restore backup
7) enjoy not having software bugs!
NOTES: this method works to delete pesky files too. Just do the same process, deleting the unwanted file instead.
SIDE EFFECTS: many apps store data in this file which makes it a cureall solution, and a small problem too. Be warned that you may have to reset some mundane settings in your apps before you are back to normal. Also, although i dont, you may want to make a backup of this file too, so if things just get worse [can't immagine why] you can replace the file and be back to before.
PLEASE POST THIS IN A LESS DISCRETE PLACE!!
Hope this works for you, Alex |

| I dunno...maybe I have been lucky so far. I've had my TJ35 for 4 months now and have yet to have this lock up problem. I do not have autolock on my pda, however I do have a MS and it has been knocked out on several occasions - even when it has been on - and I have not had this problem. Seems wierd, maybe it's a problem with a certain number of these that was manufactured at a specific time? Not sure why it would do it for so many and not for others.
Anyways, I hope you all figure the problem out, and I hope after posting this saying I don't have these problems...that I don't get them.... |

| I have had a TJ25 since early Feb 2004. I use autolock and have experienced 3 times when it would not come on. Each time I did a soft reset and it came on but all data was lost.
I have not tried disabling autolock, but do backup frequently now.

| I've got a TJ25 that I've had since late Feb. 2004. It's also had the lockup problems, most recently last night when I swapped memory sticks (Sony 8 Mb for Sandisk 64) with power off to change apps. I'm one of those people who uses one memory stick for apps and one for games and other stuff, and I was wanting to put some spare pix on my game card to carry around. Lockup occurred, hard reset, start over. SOS, BTDT several times, but took about 30-45 minutes to get back up and running. Tried FireSpark's tip and backed up games stick (found a bad app that didn't want to be deleted) and reformatted it. I'll let this thread know if that fixes the problem. BTW, the problem app was an install of Castaway...I'd deleted it (or so I thought) quite a while ago, but it seemed to have come back. Shouldn't do that again, though....everything's been erased, checked, and reloaded...what a time-consuming mess! |

| Ok, this finally happened to my TJ35. I came to work this morning and noticed my Clie was dead. I thought for whatever reason the battery was dead, so I recharged it. After about half an hour it still wouldn't turn on. I thought that didn't make sense, so I did a soft-reset. You know the rest of the story.
I do remember the last thing I did last night was insert my MemoryStick to the Clie. I am pretty sure I didn't try to pop it out and in.
Now, since I've got nothing else to lose (I already lost everything), I just tried using AeroPlayer to play MP3s on the MS. I deliberately ejected the MS. AeroPlayer just quit and I was returned to the Clie Launcher without lockup or crash! I even tried popping in my MS while in Clie Launcher and while the MS LED was still lit, I popped out my MS. Again, no lockup!
Darn! I don't even remember the last time I did a HotSync. It's got to be at least a week ago. |

| Have you guys called Sony support? I have the same problem with my TJ-35 and they basically told me to it's not their problem, go to hell. |

| Yah... hate to say it, but generally tech support is crap. no matter what. unless its the developer / one of the developers 1 on 1 with you via email or IM, the techies dont know the stuff better than you. The only advantage they have is a big manual and a company exclusive intranet database, which seem to take them ages to browse anyway. For palm OS problems, youre better off posting here (we usualy respond quickly unlike tech support) and we generally can fix a problem that others cant. I solved (well- sort of) my keyboard problem here when all sony wanted me to do was shell out another $100 for a proprietary POS keyboard that they can mess with whenever they want.
as for my trick and this ms problem, Usually the trick works better for software conflicts (repeated soft resets with 1 app), but it may work with this too to some degree. Ive never tested it as i back up like every other 30 seconds to install something new or transfer a doc. Hard esets usually arnt a problem. I just take the opportunity to kill the saved prefs right there. |

| I have tried all I can do!
Unless I unload all applications, the machine still lock up 1-2 times a week!
I love my wallpaper, so I am not happy to unload the zlauncher. I have a lot of applications on my clie, ebook, database, datebk5, dictionaries.......
I listen to MP3, so I have to switch MS, you know MS causes problems... |

| Try This: http://www.bluenomad.com/bbvfs/prod_bbvfs_details.html
BackupBuddy will (if you desire) automatically back up the entire contents (or a subset) of RAM to your MS every day at a time that you set.
I've had to do a hard reset, but I then just access the MS, run BackupBuddyVFS's Restore, and my palm is up and running (sorry: palm=clie), restored **exactly** to the way it was as of my last backup. Everything the same: settings, conduits, etc.
The Lite version is only $7, and you can try out both the regular and lite versions for 30 days.. I'd recommend it.
