Unhappy Help me! I am being tempted to switch to a Pocket PC!

I am so tempted to switch to a pocket PC... all of my brothers have done so. Also, my frustration at the lack of clear and easy T665 replacement is killing me when Pocket PC's have so many choices that look so much more functional. What would I gain and what would I loose. Someone stop me and tell me why if it is the darkside trying to pull me.

Gaming/emulation/multimedia is better on PPC. Sony is more stylish, u might miss the remote. PPC isn't as user-friendly, but I feel its more powerful (personal opinion)

As is later revealed in later Star Wars series (New Jedi Order), there is no dark side. The "Dark Side" is unrestrained power, and it reflects the inside of the person, if there is evil in the person, the power will be corrupted. But anyways, enough Star Wars. PPC users also regard Palm as the darkside. Overall, there are many advantages/disadvantages to both POS and PPC, so it's nice to switch, play around with the other, see if you like it and how it fits you.

1945/2215 are good not too expensive choices, Axim x3 Advanced (or wifi model) or Asus A620 are the most powerful two, both designs runs much more along functional than stylish lines though. Another choice would be the ipaq 4000 series, but that is more high-end.

You have a lot to gain and little to lose. What would you lose? Just a little bit of stability, but what you would gain will offset that minor setback.

No harm in trying new things, after all.

On the other hand, you could just buy a Tungsten T3 and wow all of your friends and neighbors and then host a giant barbecue and accidentally drop your TT3 into the grill just as you're about to finish the last hamburger. Now that'd be pretty interesting to see.

Thank you. I am worried that I won't have functionality like DateBK5, SuperNames, Documents to Go, HandyShopper (any list like this), ezTipper, Bible With You, MathU (reverse Polish calculator), WorldMate, and other such apps. Do you think that there are equivelant Pocket PC versions out there? Do you think that the screen resolution will utterly frustrate me... 320X320 on the T665 to a 320X240?

One other thing... when I realized how much it would cost to switch to a TT2, then I began to entertain the Pocket PC. It would be as expensive with all of the periphials that I would like to have (i.e. keyboard, cradle, case, extra styli, new software like Backup Buddie or something similar to Sony's backup version, etc. Does the Pocket PC have a back up software as well in case my battery dies? Any Pocket PC have good battery life along with a nice screen?

Battery life is equal or better on the PPC front now.

The real question is ... do you switch now or wait a little to see what's on the horizon from Sony and Palm.

If you are really that tempted by a PPC buy one from a place with a liberal return/exchange policy. When I bought a PPC a couple times in the past I went through two stages. The initial stage was fun, it was as if I had just bought a PalmOS machine for the first time, everything is new. All that amazing untested software, exploring and tweaking the new device, the thrill of new hardware. Once all that was becoming familiar I started to realize that I found myself using it less for the core functionality I buy PDA's for in the first place, it's just a bit more cumbersome and slower at getting SIMPLE things done.

The first time your PPC crashes while trying to quickly look up a contact, and the slow reset process afterwords, you get a little leery about trusting your new device for mission critical tasks. I found that the main problem was doing things too quickly on the PPC, like you are used to on the Palm, and you seem to kind of get ahead of the OS and it can become unstable while it is trying to catch up.

It is important to note that I have not used the latest generation of PPC's and many of these (to me) shortcomings may have been dealt with, remembering of course this is a Microsoft product in a kind of eternal state of beta. I'm jaded of course because of my past experience with PPC. If you previously bought two Ford's, and they were both lemons, I think you would have a hard time buying a third. I have never owned a Palm that didn't live up to my expectations, and surpass them.

All just my opinion, and once again I say that if you are that tempted, give it a shot. There are many satisfied PPC users out there.....and oddly enough here at ClieSource

If I were in your shoes I'd wait or buy T3
you can easily find one for around $300 brand new (e.g. on pricegrabber.com)

one thing you'd defintely hate about PPC is the screen, especially viewing photos. it's not even comparable seeing photos on T3 and let's say any iPAQ (the only exception is e800)
well, and not only photos, documents, ebooks everything is so much better viewable on palm

and as it was already stated, If you are more seriosly oriented and want some mission critical stuff (PIM, alarms etc) done properly stick with palm, if you'd rather enjoy a bit more multimedia, go with PPC
