| Why is it so hard to log in? This is a complaint I've had for a while. Why is logging in so difficult? Sure, there is a big LOG IN box on the CS mainpage, but I cannot so much as find a LINK to login anywhere else.
I would characterize myself as a lurker. I check in from work, from school, and on the road. Occasionally though, I will read an article that I would like to comment on. If I'm not logged in (which is most of the time), I have to click around finding something that will prompt me to log in, then BACK-BACK-BACk, refresh, logged in? Great. Then post. It's annoying, to say the least.
With all the complaining I see about anonymous posters, one would think the log in option would be highlighted better.
Tangentially, what purpose does the username / password box serve for anonymous posters (the page guests are shown when they post)? I've typed my credentials properly, but the post is still submitted as a guest. Just to be sure, I tried in the CS contest winners thread. I do not understand the purpose of a password box if it is not used to log in a registered user.
To summarize:
- Logging in is unintuitve. I submit that there should be a login link on every pertinent (read: forum) page.
- The guest post page is also unituitive. I ask for a clarification: is the username / password box supposed to log in a registered user, or simply used for the guest name? I submit the page should be clarified either way.
I hope you'll consider my suggestions. Thanks in advance! |

| I'm not sure I follow you. Not to sound condescending but to me logging in is pretty easy. At the top of CS Homepage are two boxes, one for username and the other for your password.
Some things may effect that though on your computer such as firewalls, which browser you are using and whether or not you have cookies enabled.
I'm using IE6 on an XP machine and I have my browser set to remember certain things that I type in boxes such as my username then it automatically enters the password (not very secure but I'm the only one using my PC) On my work PC, I log in each time by manually typing in my username and password and just to play it safe, I purge the internet cache when I'm done.
I think I found your problem...I went backe and checked my settings in my profile after I replied.
From the CS Homepage click on "profile" at the top of your screen and then click on "edit settings". About halfway down the page yoy will see a choice marked "Automatically log onto Cliesource (requires cookies).
If you want to, you can check this box and log on automatically each time. No need to type in logins or passwords.

| dave i think molerat is trying to say that there isnt enough login links, not that the login process is cumbersome. like he stated he logs in from many places where he probably isnt using his main computer.
molerat i agree that the guest user page is weird. it does not log you in or anything so i dont know why the password field is there.

Hmm, I guess my subject line is misleading. Like dann said, I don't think the login process is difficult, but that it is difficult to log in from a page other than the main page.
And yeah, I'm talking about browsing away from my home system. I don't comment often, so I don't log in. When I do want to comment, and am not logged in, it is usually after I've read an interesting thread.
If you don't see what I'm saying, try this: log out, then browse CS until you find a thread you'd like to reply to. You'll not see any obvious way to log in. You can click around until you find a log in screen, or you can post anonymously. |

| OK, I see what you are saying now. I logged out to see things from your perspective and the only way to post is if you go back to the main page, log in and post. It would be nice if there was a place to log in from any page that you are viewing. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

| I discovered this the other day...for some reason I was not logged on when I entered the site and for the life of me could not find where to log on since I always the forum via a bookmark. I thought I was just blind or lame or both but now I know that it isn't just me! They really should put a "log in" script on every page.

| I'm not sure why this is the case here, but it may be because guests are allowed here. When I am on one of the other forums that I frequent, and I am not logged in but hit reply I am asked to log in. and after logging in it allows me to post. |
