backup program questions

I have had my T665 for a year now and with the discovery of ebooks decided to get a memory card. I know, I should have gotten one a year ago, but couldn't justify the expense for myself since I have two small children all my extra money goes to them. I received a rather generous gift card for Christmas and plan to buy myself a memory stick with it. Since I will have my first memory stick I want to buy a backup program. I am looking at backupman and backupbuddy lite. I don't need a desktop program or a lot of features, I just want to backup my clie to a memory stick and be able to restore it should one of my children do something awful to the clie! From what I can tell both of these programs are similar and the cost is about the same, $10 for Backupman and 6.95 for Backupbuddy lite. Any recommendations on the two, which on is better or are they both the same? If they are the same, Ill go with Backupbuddy lite since it is a bit cheaper. Or are there other recommendations for a simple MS backup program that will save all of my apps and info in case my clie crashes or my kids erase something important. What about the MS program that comes with the clie? Will it save handyshopper files and such or does it only do the standard apps?

The Clie MSBackup program that comes with the most Clies does the same job. I have heard that Backupman is better than Backupbuddy. The difference in price is about $3 - so it's not a lot of money for a better product.

The advantage of one of these 3rd party backup apps is automated/unattended backups (middle of the night everyday works for me). If encryption is important to you (for security), then that eliminates BackupMan. But if it's not and you want speed and reliability (complete restore and selected files restore), then BackupMan is THE MAN!

I think I will try out backupman. I got a 128MB stick! Whoo hoo! Just think of all the books I can have on that! (can you tell Im excited) I dont need encryption, Im a stay at home mom, no high security stuff on there at all, pretty boring actually! Automatic backups sound great though because I would never remember to do it on my own. I think Ill go with Backupman. Thanks for the advice

I have a really stupid question, so please excuse my ingnorance. I have moved some things to the memory stick and they arent showing up. The only program showing is backupman. I can access those files however like my ebooks and some pictures. Is that the way its suppose to be? I would think I should be able to see what all I have on the memory stick.

You need to put stuff in a folder on the Memory Stick like this:
Palm\Launcher\

A couple of questions back to you: What program/how are you moving them? You might want to grab the free "Filez" from Palmgear. Then you have to look in your MS folders with it. What launcher are you using? The most common places where "moved" files end up when not specifically pointed to some folder are:

/PALM/Launcher
/PALM/PROGRAMS/MSFILES

FYI, if you load MP3s to your MS (the T665c is great for listening to MP3s), they need to go in the /PALM/PROGRAMS/MSAUDIO folder.

I am using the standard launcher and moving files with msgate. I installed filez and found my files! I think I will use filez from now on so I know where things go to when I move them. I also installed backupman and I am going to register it soon. It is exactly what I wanted and very simple to use. Thanks for all the advice!

Brisa:

Sounds like you're succeeding. Today is the day 128 MB seemed really big. I'll bet you have mucho free space on it?

I think eBooks are great on PDA's, and I love it that some of the classics are free.

I did good until I messed with mp3's. Suddenly you think about getting "more 128 MB sticks" Gee, only about 2 CDs will fit on my memory stick now, with the other software I have on there too.

Saw a Memory Stick at Sam's Club for $69.
