| 2Wire works After a few emails with 2Wire (pretty quick response) and quite a bit of frustration, I got my 2Wire Home Portal to work! If you have SBC DSL, this works. I also know that Linksys works as well for me. I have no other choice but the DSL so I am relieved my wireless system works. |

#19 | | Guest | Just the WEP key After going through all these manual settings, I erased eveything and starting from scratch noting the SSID setting. I made a new connection under prefs/details titling the SSID. It will be 2WIREXXX where the X are numbers.. Then put in the WEP key (I now know mine by heart - in brackets under the router). All I did was hit connect, changing nothing else, and voila - It worked. I was surfing with ease.
I still cannot wireless hot sync but that is another topic I need to research.
IF you need manual settings, I'll post that too. I'm posting this via the Clie. Good luck!

| Probably don't need manual settings Here's the copy of what 2wire sent me. If you can't do it automatically, I would email 2wire yourself. They are pretty responsive though Christmas is coming soon.
"Here is ALL the information you should possibly need or Sony might ask you about the HomePortal connection.
The HomePortal is an 802.11b wireless access point.
It uses 40/64-bit Hexadecimal WEP by default.
The 10 digit HEXADECIMAL WEP key can be found on the bottom of the HomePortal within [BRACKETS]
For hardcoding the settings, you would use the following:
IP: 172.16.1.x (x=any number 1-32)
Subnet/Netmask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway/Router: 172.16.0.1
Primary DNS: 206.141.193.55
Alternate DNS: 206.141.195.76" |

| itu2000; If you can connect to the router, you can either go to Prefs, network, then menu, options, view log. At the top is your MAC ID. The other way is to connect then go to your router's diagnostic page and see the MAC address there, but there may be more than one because your computer's address will be there too. Another way is to connect, and click "status" from the wireless LAN setup page.
I agree my previously posted problem above is DNS related. I'm still trying some of your solutions. I will keep you posted if any change. |

| I use two different Linksys routers at home. B & G (I have two diff. connections)
Using one of my routers, I have a static IP address assigned on the UX, on another I use DHCP and don't have any problems with either.
I cannot connect to the router if the channel is greater than 6. (Even when using an Adhoc connection)
I don't have any problems using WEP. (I use notepad to copy the key and transfer it to my device using BT)
It helps to initially have the SSID to be broadcasted so that I can find the router/AP, but it is not manditory if you know the SSID.
When you have two different Routers/AP in your list, the UX50 will choose the one broadcasting it's SSID if you use "Auto Connect". I had to specifically choose the connection that wasn't broadcasting it's SSID to make the connection. I've got a feeling you will need to specifically select the connection if you're not broadcasting the SSID even if you've only got one WiFi connection.
I've connected to different brands of AP/Routers as I've traveled around.
I've connected using Adhoc via a secondary WiFi card in my laptop.
I get the connection error in NetFront because I forgot to change the connection setting after using bluetooth.
I've had problems going through a Linksys G router at a friends house, (no DNS assigned when looking at info) and had to reset his router. I didn't check his firmware and that may be the issue. (I did not soft/hard reset my UX. It wasn't the problem)
When you Hotsync, ensure that the correct IP address is set:
1 Computer > Hotsync > Setup > Network > TCP/IP Settings (note the IP address)
2 UX50 > Hotsync > Primary PC Setup > Primary PC Address = (Above IP address)
3 If you have a firewall enabled on XP, add the Hotsync service and ensure the above IP address is entered
in there. (The internal/external Port is 14238 via TCP)
4 On the UX50 make sure the Primary PC Name is set to: !! in your Hotsync settings.
I hope this helps.

#27 | | Guest | Clie UX50 Problem solved I read read and read some more about all of the problems with these things. At home on my NetGear router, everything was cool. At work however, the Clie would connect and not browse the web.
Simple solution for me? Set a static IP address in the Clie for when I'm connected to the work router. Of course, that was not the solution alone because the problem is a lack of adherence to true DHCP spec on the part of some mobile device makers, so setting the IP address statically was a mere way of getting to the core of the problem: the DNS server assignment.
Apparently these routers are not able to pass the DNS IP to the client device, and so the device gets signed on but has not access to DNS info and so it generates the well known "Invalid Network Settings" error--which is in fact correct.
Just find out what DNS server IP is getting passed to normal computers on the network and when you set a static IP in the Clie, be sure to supply the same DNS IP(s) that other normal computers are getting. Problem solved. ;-)

| I am having problems as well. My ux50 works and surfs fine(with the exception of some errors listed above) for a few hours and then will not connect unless I reset the router and the ux.
My ipaq 4150 connects fine and never needs to be reset or anything. I am thinking that this problem must be unique to the sony and not to pdas/routers in general. |

| I've noticed something else with this problem though I don't know exactly what the solution is. I have two WAPs here in my apartment with the same SSID/WEP key. Normally a laptop will pick the AP that has the better signal and use it. However, I dont think the UX50 has this capability.
What I noticed was that when I scanned for APs and then attempted to switch from one to the other (based on MAC addresses), the profile in Network... Wireless LAN... continued to show the original MAC address even though I had told it to switch to the other WAP.
I don't know how to fix this, other than deleting and recreating the profile. It's a hassle since I use static addresses and every time I redo the profile I have to type all the information in again.
Just my 2¢ |

| chicago84,
All I have to say is THANK YOU. I found your post on the manual settings you got from 2Wire and entered them in a few minutes ago. I'm now browsing on my UX50 via my 2Wire router!
Thanks again. Hope you got your wireless synching issues worked out. Let us know if that task went more smoothly.
