| I want to build Cradle Power Connector -> USB So this AC-adapter only charging sucks.
And a couple vendors are selling cases and cradles that allow you to charge the UX-50 via USB. this is cool, but I don't want a case on my UX-50, and I really don't want another cradle. I want to use the cradle I have.
So, I'm thinking. If we can figure out what connector is used on the A/C adapter, order one, splice one onto the end of a standard USB cable, then the standard UX50 cradle could be plugged into a normal USB port for charging.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, look at this: http://shop.brando.com.hk/ipdaux50s...ercradlekit.php
This guy made a second cradle and modded it so that it could take USB for power. I want to mod a USB cable for power and plug it into a standard cradle. I use bluetooth for syncing, so I don't need an actual USB sync cable anyway.
Anyone out there with a head for electrical parts know the part number of that AC adapter input on the back of the cradle?
(And yes, i could hack up my UX50's AC adapter, but if it doesn't work, then i'd be left with nothing. which is possibly the only thing more irritating than an AC only power adapter). |

| I had similar ideas...from what I can tell the plug is proprietary to Sony. I couldn't find a source anywhere. I had two AC adapters for my old T615, which uses the exact same ac adapter as the UX-50. I cut and spliced the plug from one of them to a cell phone ac adapter from Comp USA for $10 about the size of a match box, with enclosed, fold up AC plug. I was still tied to the wall, but had less to carry. However, I like your idea and think I'll try it. A replacement AC adapter for the UX-50 is $29, and they could probably be found on the web cheaper. A lot for the small plug, but not so much for not having to drag the standard adapter around. |

| Seconded! I second this!
I'd also like to buy a USB cable that provides power to Sony's cradle. The Brando solution is almost there (and very tempting), but I don't like the idea of adding yet another proprietary device in the mix.
(Another workaround: Sony has an auto power adapter for the Clies (PEGA-DC10), whose plug fits into the UX-50's cradle. Combine this with an A/C to female auto power adapter, and you have a potentially more-portable power solution. Unfortunately the PEGA-DC10 runs $40 retail, although Amazon.com has it on sale for $33 at the moment.)
gwittie, i hope your splicing idea works, because I think a lot of people would be interested in such a solution. |
