| webcam for the programmers out there, how difficult would it be to allow the camera on the NX70V to function as a webcam? |

| This would seriously rock. Right now I'm using a cheap (Digital Video/Still Camera/Video Cam/Web Cam) Combo camera as a webcam. I know the NX would have much better quality, and I could give the cheap cam to my friend who wants a webcam. Let's see it made! I mean, MSImport goes straight to the MS port, surely a app could go straight to the camera. |

| please take the poll at the top, I'm hoping this thread will catch the attention of a develop who sees the $$$$. Short of an actual contest a poll is the only incentive I can think of to inspire a developer.
I'd drop $20 on it... |

#6 | | Guest | I allready have this working actually... am currently using my NR as a webcam, works like a charm.
As for this working on the NX, it wont - until ( or rather if ) Sony releases the necessary developer information on how to control the camera of the NX.
I have allready said more then I should, but if you want to see this app for the NX, maybe it is a good idea to start flooding Sony with emails requesting this info to be released. Not sure if it will help though. | |

| the answer (an answer) would be to get yahoo to do a clie nx port of yahoo IM... this way they can do the legwork and work with sony on creating an IM webcam that would work over the wifi.
so in keeping with the previous poster... let's all write yahoo.

| HA! Good luck getting Yahoo! to do that. They won't even provide Linux/Unix support for their streaming media at launch.yahoo.com

| problem with that is that m$ has created a standard interface for webcam and streaming media which linux/unix has failed to do (i believe)... it *probably* has to do with all the different windowing environments that exist for linux/unix. yahoo capitalizes on this where microsoft is concerned because it's simple.
i guess the same problem would be faced with all the different versions of OS5 if there is no standard interface for streaming media.
so there's really two companies to lobby... palm and yahoo...

| Apparently there is no "specific" email to submit request but you can access the live help person and they will forward it to the appropriate department: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INT...sy_customercare
Nowhere in the SDK documentation does it reference code to employ the camera...
Did the SDK for the NR series include documention for the NR's camera? Otherwise how did you develop your current webcam software?
What specifically do I need to beg Sony to release?
We could also ask MarkSpace (makers of Missing Sync) to jump on it... |

| you know neojipc, you asked a question and i didn't respond "as a programmer"
in my experience, when you create files in other languages, before you can actually write to the filesystem the data (be it a document or video) has to be "serialized" at a low level.
since this process would be taking place (from camera to memory stick), it is reasonable to assume that a "redirector" could be written to either intercept and/or write to the ethernet interface as streaming media. the biggest hurdles would be 1) creating the redirector and 2) (my biggest hurdle) understanding and coding the encapsulation necessary for streaming video

| Rock the vote! I submitted a request to MarkSpace for a web cam feature for CLIE N series. Here is their response:
"This is on the "wish list". Being quite a bit of work, we'll have to see if it would add commensurate value to the package, but it sure would be neat."
...and also a request for wireless hotsync over 802.11b via their missing sync software:
"Palm Desktop for Mac does not support a TCP based sync. We could get our own stuff working over TCP (disk mounting, iPhoto,
iTunes), but a HotSync will be a thornier issue."
So if you all show your support in this thread which I will email them perhaps we can convince them its worth the R&D to develop a webcam feature (and possibly wireless iPhoto/iTunes/disk mounting support).
Those interested, write a quick blurb and vote to show your support either here or to Brian Hall: brian_hall@markspace.com
thanks |
