Read the article carefully. They strongly imply that passwords are not a barrier to investigators. Quote:
Hand-held users often believe - wrongly, investigators say - that what is personal is also private. "People assume that only they can have access," Dr. Leibrock said.
As the criminals are discovering, that isn't the case. The simplicity of a hand-held makes information easily retrievable - not only by the owner, but by whoever has physical access to the device.
|
And, also note that your PDA may be password protected, but that hotsync backup on your hard drive probably isn't.
The best you can do is make it difficult for police to get in. I doubt you can make it impossible.

| ok i'm getting paranoid now, i keep my jounral on my pda, and i just realize i keep some of the most personal things that i would never want anyone to see about me, i guess i shouldn't think of my pda to be my best friend, it knows more than my own best friend does about me...scary no one can get info out of the human best friend, but the electronic one is open to anyone, any way to keep the device from betraying me?

| Cool...
Hey why didn't those people just backup to a card, hard reset the device, and hide the card...anywhere? I can think of a million ways to permanently hide an SD/MS card in a retrieveable place. |

Because it seems like there were still using the info to help them keep their 'activities' organized. They probably didn't think they would get caught.

Right. A To-Do List of criminal activities and the victim's personal schedule isn't much use to the criminal if it only exists on a memory stick that's hidden behind that loose brick in the fireplace.
Criminals use the PDA just like the rest of us do. It's just not much good if the PDA is stored in a plastic bag at the bottom of the Oatmeal box.

How did you know? Who told you? Now I have to find a new place...
I had read an article about this about a year ago, may have been the same article, I haven't read the one that is linked to in this thread yet. It is really interesting though, how criminals are being so careless with thier information. Now I know why all of these 128-bit encryption programs are popping up for PalmOS! Seriously, I'm sure that's for the cooporate sector of the market... but I'm sure Big Louie wouldn't mind having the same high-level encryption for his list of "associates". |
