#1 | | Guest | I got the recorder!! I got the recorder!!
The Video Recorder records TV programs or videos onto the Memory Stick® media* for playback with the CLIÉ handheld. Take your CLIÉ handheld and watch those recorded videos at your convenience...on the plane, on the subway or when you're waiting in the lobby for your next meeting.
Compatible with: PEG-UX50 / PEG-UX40 / PEG-NZ90 / PEG-NX80V / PEG-NX73V / PEG-NX70 / PEG-NX60 / PEG-TG50
Model: PEGA-VR100K / Price: $299.99
It's cool but there are some drawbacks. Like LP and Lp2 mode are pretty much useless. EP is watchable, and HQ is great! but check their site for record times. more details later after done playing...

| I heard you can only record a maximum of 2 hours with it. No matter the quality or size of MS. Can you verify if this is true? Or is there a way to go over this limit?

| I know the specs. But, if someone actually has one, can they test it out?

| The quality of LP and Lp2 dont compare to EP or HQ. its terrible in my opinion.
I tried it with cartoons, news, sports and sitcoms and cant stand the LP modes. they are just too blocky!
SP is the minimum I will ever use unless I am recording audio (yes recording audio to the line in works)
another thing I do not like is that U can not play back the memory stick recording IN the recorder! YET it does have a video out? put simply the recorder is basically a composite tuner with a memory stick recorder piggy backed on to it. video and audio out are only used to see what you are recording or as use as a stand alone TUNER. makes no sense to me. video out does NOT work when you are in standby mode and it is recording.
U can set time, change channel, recording quality, start and stop recording FROM the recorder. You cant program from the recorder but U can change the channel and start manual recording. it has a one touch record like most vcrs (timed, 00, 15, 30, 60) so U can start it recording and walk away
It does have a line in, which is selectable in the channel list for use with external video like cable box! nice! could pump a radio into the back and use it as a radio recorder!
I may keep it though as mem sticks go down in price 1gbs will start to go down in price 1gb in SP mode will store 7.6 hours which is enough for one day.
the thing made me go out and buy another 256MB card. 256 wont store much at SP mode at 105 minutes. and U need 2 if U want one to record while you watch the other.
What they should have done
add a remote control
add on screen programming
add a way to play back recordings to tv from the recorder
add a small HDD inside so it can copy to it while the memory stick is OUT and then copy it later
add a way to use an internet Guide like Tivo!
add a way to name the channels on the clie
I was watching howard stern at work today! hahaha
I wonder if someone could find a way to adapt hdd's and other media (like CF, SD, multiple memory sticks, etc) to fit in the recorders front slot?

| YES, if U use a device that strips the copy protection (like a macrovision remover)
What is macrovision?
Macrovision is an analogue copy protection of Videotapes, DVD movies and PPV television (Analogue signal). Its purpose is to make it harder to record such signals with a VCR, thus it's about 5% of all VCR's on the market, which can copy it. If you try to copy a Macrovision-protected tape, the copy becomes crappy and not worth seeing, the picture changes brightness with time and the color is distorted. Not all TV's work very well with this form of protection e.g. the top of picture is distorted and it might look like the tape is damaged. If you Forward or Backward the tape while you se a picture on your screen, you may actually se at the top of the picture has small regions with black - white - black - white.... this revels the Macrovision signals.
The Macrovision tricks the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) in the VCR in such a way that the AGC thinks that the signal is really weak and need to be amplified and the strong signal is attenuated. In this way the picture becomes very unstable (bright-dark) when the signal is fed through a VCR. It is not possible to trick the signal if you try copying it through the aerial in/out -puts. (You may already have tried that?). |

| yeah but crook man, what is your intened use? its nice but check out www.snapstream.com
I have this as well and for $50 and a cheap tuner card -- U can set the recordings from any internet pc in the world! and never run out of space because you use a real PC with a real HDD
just get a memory stick usb reader and copy the ones U want to take with you for that day, leave the rest on the HDD.
you see, Snapstream has a feature called RECOMPRESSION that takes the original 3gb WMV file and recompresses it for you for pdas. U can have it do it immediatley or at 3 oclock in the morning
unfortunatley, it is geared for ipaqs and pocket windows media payer.
--> I havent figured out is how to record in a mode that clie can play. AND I HAVE ASKED on their tech support site. :-(
damn palm does recognize Windows media player files (WMV)
if it did I would have never bought the pega vr-100

2 hours per show. this *IS* what the manual says! sorry also one touch timer i mentioned before (00, 15, 30, 60) goes up to two hours as well
I only have 2 x 256mb cards. havent tried long recordings!
handheld can old 100 presets and 20 on the memory stick
its great if U have a certain show U watch every day like bill oreilly or something
guy, please get the manual before buying! it is on sonys site.

| where is the tivo functionality that they mentioned? there is no guide. I bet someone could write one real easy though if they figure out the format they are writing to the card
If I had unlimited money, I would buy 10 of these stack them on top of each other and also buy 20 1gb cards!
then get a splitter and hook them all up to extended cable
hehe

Those specs are for the different capacities of the memory sticks only. It says in the manual that the recorder cannot record more than 2 hours CONTINUOUSLY. In other words you can have a bunch of presets (up to 20 on a MS) up to the capacity of your memory stick, but no single preset can be for more than 2 hours CONTINOUS. I also checked under manual recording and it mentions the 2 hour limit as well. I suppose to work around this you could set up 2 presets one after the other. If you're recording manually hit stop when there's a break in your program near the 2 hour point. Then hit record again to get another 2 hours worth. I'm sure one of the clever people on this forum will come up with a slick and easy way to work around this limitation.
