Bluejacking

...is it possible to bluejack a mobile phone using the UX50?

i.e. - Send a business card to a discoverable BT phone without having to pair them first?

Anyone had experience with this?

It should be. I think there's nothing that would interfere with that.

It really shouldn't be called bluejacking. It should be called bluespoofing or something. There's nothing really being stolen. It's just a prank, but if the wrong name gets out, people will start thinking that it's a negative thing.

I recommend BlueTag. Send a vcard to somebody with "BlueTag: Tag, You're IT!" as the name, and then put your sig in one of the fields so people know who started that particular .... game of tag. Could be kinda fun.

I came up with an idea for a "viral" Palm game like this a few years ago, the idea being that you would beam it to somebody, and then you'd have to pass it on to at least two or three other people within 24 hours to continue the game. If you don't, you lose. The idea for the game included the ability to track people's sigs as they spread across the country, assuming that people logged into a website or something.

I'm rambling agian.

BlueTag: You're IT!

tagbacks?

I also understand that in theory it's possible to do. However, I can't see any other option of sending a business card from the UX50 via anything other than IrDA.

I've also messed around with BT Serial a bit (was able to get a friend's p800 to dial out using some modem string commands once we were paired!), but even after discovery you're not able to communicate with the device unless paired.

Obviously, this is what pairing is for and it's a simple but effective security feature. But if phones are able to send business cards to each other via BT, then why are we condemed to only send via infrared?

- only slightly flustered mode80, but going to bed now -

tnx JustaNoob

Under Address/Send... you can send via BT, but for some reason my UX didn't find my T68 -- even though they're paired. It spotted my PC though...

I'll have to explore this more.

JustaNoob is right, you can send an adress/business card via BT to anything in range.

JustaNoob, you can't find your T68i because the T68i is not discoverable. If you activate that via the menu, it will stay discoverable for 3 minutes. BT Nokias are by default discoverable, untill the user disables it, just like on the Clié and your pc. That's why Nokias are a favorite to BlueJack But your Clié is also an easy target, so when not needed make your Clié undiscoverable.

If two BT devices are being paired, then these can always communicate wich each other.

This is more than a little disturbing.  I hope this applies ONLY if they're set as discoverable.  Among other potential problems, what's to stop businesses from using it to spam you (if this is not being done already)?

No, it's no biggie. It's just harmless fun. It started on Esato.com, SE phones were the tools and Nokia owners the victim BlueJacking is about creating a contact with some funny line as name. T68i have a discover function. It can "sniff" other BT devices within 10 meters or 30 feet. Other phones discovers only when needed, by sending that contact via BT for example. It's just like sending a regular contact, but the reciever doesn't know where it come froms. And mostly, these people don't even know what BT is. The contact arrives on Nokias like an SMS. Even with the same tone This is mostly fun in the cinema, before the movies start. Or if it is a scary movie, during the movie

It's actually a NX73V/E You can also use a TG50, NZ90 or the UX40/50.
It's a lot faster using the keyboard then when using my T68i. Only in the case of BlueJacking that blue light can be very bright. I use the Clié only in well lit places, so the light doesn't draw attention.

Defiant: that's hilarious. I might just start going to scary movies to BT something like "I see you there, blondie. Don't be afraid, your death will be quick and painless"

or "a serial killer sitting right behind you...add to contact?"

Funny stuff.

I should add that I think that I think this "craze" is my sizzle than steak. It's just that there hasn't been anything to replace the whole mob craze of this past summer, and the press is just looking for something tech-culture to publicize. And I think its proven by the fact that the bluejackq grrl is going to be selling sweatshirts. How dumb can you get? Who wants a bluejack sweatshirt?

HA!  I thought it was something else.  This could be fun!  Could be a great way to break the ice with someone you're attracted to - as long as their BT is on.

It would be funny if you're trying to message a cute girl, but some burly, bearded guy gets it instead.  That's when anonymity is really helpful.

Call me immature, but..

...yesterday I Bluejaced two people in the audience for Matrix Revolutions (well before the film actually started) with a message reading "The Matrix has you.....now switch off your mobile phone!".

yes, I'm probably 14 at heart. :-)
