Cool And so it begins.....Zodiac ships out!

I'm excited, I'm an early adopter and pre-ordered the Zodiac2. Got my email today stating my account has been processed and will ship tommorow. I'll get it by Monday. I will post my initial review on it here. Oh no! I'm forgetting about my NX70 already, but the clies will always remain dear to me. I am sure sony will come up with one that makes us salivate. For now, I hope the Zodiac does what its advertised to do.

I got my email too. I'm quite excited.

I really wish the Cliesource/PalmOne City guys would add a Zodiac forum. I guess it would kind of fit within the PalmOne City site.

Good idea

That would be nice, but a lot of our fellow members don't even like the Zodiac. I doubt that there will a forum devoted to the "Z". If the Z becomes a hit maybe they will put up one in Palmonecity. So far, there are plenty of naysayers regarding the Zodiac. Most folks are waiting before deciding, which seems to be the smarter move. I guess I'm not that smart.

I like it... not enough though. I would get it if it had a
1. Camera
2. Keyboard
3. Voice recording(or does it?)
and maybe bt... can't wait for your review though! I'll be the first ONline to read it

Besides the aesthetic design, which makes it look like a gameboy and maybe a bit large for some people(although it's about the same size of the NX70) what is there not to like about the Zodiac as a PDA? I agree that it's games appear to be poor at the moment, but just looking at the specs as a PDA unit alone, it looks great. Probably the only downside is a 200mhz processor, but thats what our clies currently have right now, but this has a graphics accelerator.

Even if this fell off the face of the planet in a year, what is there to worry since you have a fully functioning PDA? Yeah no support for your PDA, but probably everyone on this board owns a Sony Clie and we all know how little support is given by Sony to Clies after a few months.

Yeah, i think the graphics processor makes it really easy to port or develop games as well... something like that

Even though GR, Doom 3, Spy Hunter and stuff comming out, its pretty expensive.. These are all what I call action titles.. ie: 2-8 hours of gameplay... 30 dollars for that is too much. On gameboy, its same deal, but HUGE selection. Therefore I pick and choose.. Advance wars 2 got me 20 hours, metroid fusion got me 17, ff tactics got me 55, I imagine spy hunter a few hours, then done. If not then it will be a painfully annoying reflex level

Still a great PDA

I agree. The big x factor for the Zodiac are games. If they get the big game people involved, the Z will be a success. I have been tracking this and it seems like Tapwaves recruiting more big designers like Sega, Activision and Midway. If they get EA sports they have it made. As a PDA, its top notch, all the reviews admit to that. Whoever pre-ordered it won't regret it, especially if you're a PDA user. The game hardware is really tempting to game designers so it has a good chance as a game machine, but I don't think against Nintendo, though it definitely trashes the Ngage.

The camera and voice recording would of been a nice touch to add, I agree, but it's still a great PDA.

When the Helix (Zodiac) was announced at first, they talked about it having a camera. This might have been only rumour, however, the Motorola i.MX1 MC9328MX1 processor does have a CSI (CMOS sensor interface), and the ATI W4200 (if it IS an upgraded 3200) does have a Video Capture Port. The Motorola processor offers an option to switch off unused blocks to save power. With an integrated camera, the batteries would have a hard time, which is not in the interest of gaming. You might be seeing a next generation Zodiac with an integrated camera. Would you be willing to take such a Zodiac at $100 more, and a bigger package, and lower battery life ?
Keyboards will come, no doubt. Of course the Zodiac has an integrated (graffiti) keyboard, and there are IR keyboards. The Zodiac DOES have an IR port, there has been some doubt somewhere. Again, would you be willing to have a bulkier device for a keyboard ? I want mine to be sleek.
Voice recording.......i don't know why they left it out. I'm still trying to get info on the YMF768 Yamaha sound chip in the Zodiac, but Yamaha is not very open with specifications. I think, if the voice recording was done another way (not through the sound chip) it would have asked too much of the software, which would be bad for gaming.
And bt... do you mean Bluetooth ? It has Bluetooth, easily switchable through a small button on top of the device.

Looks good but I think this will be another PDA I'll skip on, this design looks kinda like a gameboy and would be afraid to pull it around in the office, can Imagine someone in the office saying 'Ahh, my lil kid has that gameboy, you know you shouldn't play that in the office' ...<----just like that face heheh

A lot of people would actually bring it to the office. There was a poll about that somewhere. I believe it could be used in an office environment, as long as they don't have neon or pastel colors. The big turn off is the size, thats where you would want the T3 instead. As a business person, you would want things you could easily pocket.

The Zodiac is not a large as you think.
Held in landscape mode it's only 0.3" wider than the T3, slightly thinner than the T3 and only 1.5" longer (without the T3 slider extended).

Tapwave is releasing a business model too ya know. It will be more rectangular and "professsional".
