TJ35 mini-review

TJ35's are now available in several "brick&mortar" retail stores. I found a stack in the Santa Clara CompUSA.

I needed a thin OS 5 unit to replace my aging Clie T615C. The TJ25/35 are the thinnest OS 5 models currently available; and the TJ35 cost about $100 less (before rebate) than did the old T615C.

The most important note is that the Graffiti 1 restore trick works on the TJ35 (copying the ROM files from my T|T to a SD card to a Memory Stick on my Mac, and then the from Memory Stick to TJ35 storage heap before a soft reset). That makes the TJ35 usable for me (I've been using G1 for 7 years, it's probably wired into my brain already).

The TJ35 display is slightly brighter than my old T615C on all equivalent brightness settings (low to max); with much more saturated "red"s. The alarm sound seems to have around the same volume. (Of course, my T|T is much louder and has a brighter display).

The audio output from the TJ35 earphone jack is much louder and cleaner than from the T|T. I'd guess the 60% volume setting on TJ35 was roughly the same as the 100% volume setting without overdrive on the T|T (using Aeroplayer of course). All the way up, it was too loud for me to put the ear-buds in my ears.

The CPU performance is between 35 and 40% faster than the T|T on both ARM and 68k code, which almost exactly scales with CPU clock rate; and roughly twice as fast as the T615C on non-accelerated 68k apps.

It's still charging, so no battery life results yet.

Compared to the T|E, the TJ35 is thinner, benchmarks faster and has a metal case and regular serial port connector. On the downside, it cost more, has less storage memory, an almost unusable stylus and doesn't have as bright a display. So the TJ 35 works for me because I prefer a dimmer display for ebook reading at night, store my large databases on a card instead of in memory, and usually use a full-size pen with a PDA tip instead of the built-in sytlii. Plus (biased reviewer notice), I wanted to show off a model with my software in the OEM ROM.

Thanks, that's a very nice summary! I tend to have the same preferences you have: don't need a super bright screen, because I would never put it at maximum brightness to begin with, and I also use a full size pen-stylus. I have a TJ35 on order and I should receive it by 11/3 the latest (hopefully sooner).

Here is the result of my initial TJ35 battery life test. I used a non-CPU-intensive task (clock display) with the backlight at 33% to simulate e-book reading on a long airline flight.

TJ35 = 6:51 to the first "low battery" warning dialog.
T615C = 5:34
T|T = 4:20 (bluetooth off, backlight at minimum)
Vx = (over 12.5 hours, backlight off)

The TJ35 battery life test was run after a full 4 hour charge to 4.2V, and run at a room temperature of 70-72F. The unit powered off automatically after about another 14 minutes.

At almost 7 hours of battery life, the TJ35 is good enough for cross-country flights, but not trans-Ocean flights. The above are not power user tests. Running something like a graphics intesive game at a maximum backlight setting can reduce the battery life to betweeen 1/3rd and 1/2 of the above estimates. YMMV.

I have a question... is there any way to get the sound utility from a TG50 to the TJ35? The fact that I cannot choose some of my current customizable alarms was very disappointing, but if I can get most of my desired app's back in the TJ35 and find a good stylus/pen combo then I might actually reconsider it again. Any thoughts?

I have a TG50 and am seriously looking at the TJ35. I prefer the "look" of this PDA over the Shiny Tugsten E and have compared the screen to several PDA's and find that it is very similar to the NX70v which I was looking at in my local Cicuit City. It definitely not at bright as my TG50 but it is brighter than the t665 (there was one of those STILL on display at Circuit City!) and the color saturation looks good. I remember when the TG50 came out everyone complained about the "stage lights" along the bottom of the screen... The slightly bluish cast of the NX70v was complained about... there is always something lacking for someone on EVERY PDA so there will never be a perfect PDA that fits the bill of every consumer.

I feel the screen on the TJ, while nowhere near as bright as the TE, is still a super screen. I had a SJ22 earlier this year and felt at the time it was a great screen (coming from a t615c and a Tungsten T) and this screen is definitely better than the SJ22!

To each his own............

Maybe, I had a bad TJ35, but my T665 was brighter than the TJ35. If anyone else has the TJ35 and you have compared it to a T665, can you let me know what you think of the brightness? I am willing to rethink this thing, since I really want a Palm OS 5.2.1 device.

I know that PalmOne had some issues with their TT3's where one was significantly dimmer than the other.

Simply copy it over! But please not the speaker is not the same so the sound will be terrible on TJ35. I dont mind as the current tones are sufficient. If u looking for poluphonic sound like the TG50, then TJ35 is NOT for you.

Compusa, Circuit City, Fry's, etc., all said that the TJ35 has polyphonic sounds. Are you saying that it is not polyphonic? Are these retailers all wrong?

Also, how would you copy it over? I currently have a Palm OS 4.1 device. I am pretty sure that it won't work on the TJ35. Where else can I get this software?

I could relate to this thread... since I am an ex T665 and TG50 user.

Now I am a proud user of TJ35... Malaysia was a little too slow with TJ35 so I got mine in Singapore, @ SGD 489.00... Finally I have found something that quite close to my needs... Its sleek, minimalistic, double the memory and lightweight. Ans the screen quality, nothing comes close to Clie lines. In other words - it's perfect for my needs.

I have close to 1K Address entries, heavy DateBk5 user, and keep all my important information in Memo. I use DTG6 for my spreadsheet and presentations and sometimes Word files. I like Mobipocket, but only reads occassionally, thinking of avantgo since it doesnt come with Mobipocket anymore.

I dont need keyboard or bluetooth. Nor I wasn't too happy for the speaker isn't really polyphonic. Actually it gives quite an audible alarm/ reminder tones.

I tried to look at PalmOne models, the closest I got was TT2. Its sleek and compact, but its heavy. Sliding in and out of cradle was also an issue to me. TT3 doesnt look appealing and not practical to slide open when u need full screen. When TT came out, everyone complained about not having to be able to do a number of things without having to extend it. TE was the next contender, but the fingerprints smudging issue, no universal connector and lately the case of the paint job coming off, I am glad I didnt take the plunge.

http://www.cliesource.com/forums/sh...?threadid=30787

Now in the look-out for the cradle, extra stylus as well as a nice leather case.

Oh, FYI, one difference that I found out is that TJ35 has shiny metallic sides as well as the bottom part where the connectors is. Also, other colours available in Japan only.

If you like TJ25, wait for TJ35, comes with more memory and headphone jack as well as AeroPlayer. Or if you still thinking betwen TE or TJ35, well, you know I've made my choice...

U said TG50 to TJ35. Look for the Sound Utility apps using Clie File or Filez, beam it to TJ35. Palm OS 4.1 apps probably won't work.

Someone mentioned that the speakers are not the same. Its better then TJ25. but not as good as TG50.

It makes sense as TJ35 does not come with the Sound Utility software.

Please try it and let us know!

The TJ35 can play polyphonic sounds, but apparently not using the older Sony Sound Utility MIDI files, only by using ADPCM files. The OS 5 sampled sound manager on the TJ35 can also be used to play polyphonic sounds, but I'm not sure if any apps other than a few games use this feature. And of course, you can play any music in mp3 or ogg vorbis format thru Aeroplayer. There may be at least one 3rd party alarm app which launches Aeroplayer, but I'm not sure which one.

My TJ35 and a store-display T665 both seemed a little brighter than my T615C, but perhaps not by more than the random variation of individual units.

You can buy PDA stylus tips for many full size pens, Cross for instance.

ACK for the CPU and the form factor, but not the memory.
On my T675 (T665) I've got 16 MB usable, the TJ35 has 'only' 23 MB which isn't double but 43 % more!

Please correct this if I'm wrong.

Allmost all 32 MB of the memory in the TJ35 is usable, but only 23 MB is usable for storage, 1 MB is used by the OS, and 8 MB is usable as RAM by the running application.

Programs need RAM to run; the T665 didn't have very much (256k maybe?), which wasn't enough for apps such as 3rd party mp3 players and more full featured web browsers.

I've now had my tj35 for about 4 days and love it. I am little upset at Sony for not including the Ogg-Vorbis plugin for Aeroplayer by default. It was easy enough to find and install but since it is supposed to be the default plugin it makes sense to have it. I don't really have any complaints about the device at all. I had to add it to the visor driver for linux and recompile the driver, but that is only due to the newness of the device. Once that was done I have had no problems syncing with any of the apps available for *nix. I am happy with the sound quality using ear buds and even a cassette adapter for my car stereo. I would definitely say that Sony did a good job overall on this one!
