Exclamation Wireless Blogging

So for the last few days I've been working toward being able to update my web site remotely using my ux50 and my T616. Surprisingly, I've been having to go through a million hoops to be able to do this. I'm hoping that the community here will be able to help find the most direct path.

First off finding a good HTML editor has been a trial into it self. No app seems to have a good path from the strange memo format a .html file. Docs to go doesn't read a simple text file or a html file. I find that odd.

The max file size limitation seems to limit Torpedo. PHTML just wont run on my clie at all. Torpedo can send to memo pad but seems to be limited by file size. On top of that its super unstable and there are buttons I cant touch or else crash. PHTML wants to use Xiini and Torpedo wants to send to Palmscape. Wouldnt it be better to just send to a user defined browser? Example: Netfront.

This may be a limitation on how the Palm handles files but It's not an impossible task. I managed to upload an html file to my web server from memopad, download it as a .html file, zip it, then in the archive "send" it to netfront from LightNzip. Not exactly the easiest way to "preview" a file locally. After uploading to my web server it kinda defeated the point. but why can i send to netfront from a zip utility and not from the html authoring app!?

Shouldn't I be able just to save a index.html file on my memory stick? then use my own FTP client to send to my web server? LFTP seems to be compiled programmer example code and only seems to be useful to send memopad notes to the ftp server.

I bought Torpedo, PHTML and Docs to go in an attempt to just export a .html file. So far no luck. I'm guessing its not impossible. To send to my web server I'm using VFSFTP+ which has proved to be the highlight of this experience. So far its been the best FTP client I've used on the Palm. This how ever also pointed out that identifying which movie file is associated with which file on the memory stick. The Clie Viewer shows a "title" but no file name. Everything else shows a File name but no title. How do i know which movie im watching is which file I need to upload to my web server?? does that confuse anyone else?

I'm guessing/hoping that Docs to go will be able to dump out a .html file. It's already writing a more complex .doc formatted file, a .html file cant be much more difficult. Torpedo hasnt been as useful as I had hoped and PHTML just hasnt worked.

If anyone has any suggestion for a good text or html app that can just open and write a simple txt or htm i'd be ever so greatful.

cheers,
BadKangaroo

Some excellent questions that I would like to hear the answer to.

My one answer would be to use ssh client and login to your server and use vi. But I have yet to try this, still waiting for my UX50 to arrive.

http://www.okita.com/test/test.htm

well its not much, but it was wriiten in torpedo, as the text says, then exported to memo pad then VFSFTP+ was used to uplaod from memo to ftp site. The trick is that if I modify the file in something other than torpedo there is no way to "import" from memo or .htm or .txt or .doc into torpedo for more editing.

ah yes... bleeding edge technology... how it manages to defy logic.

Content management tool?

What about navigating to your own hosted blog system such as Movable Type (which runs out of your own cgi-bin) or even Blogger?

Then all you would have to do is type your updates into the Net Front browser or even copy them from memopad.

When I upgraded to the UX50 from the SJ33 I had webediting in mind for my new Clie using Torpedo or PHTML, but it seems kind of pointless at the end of the day. Too convoluted and too many hoops to jump through, as was previously mentioned. Logging onto your own CMS might make things a lot easier.

- just my two pence worth! -

I know its possible, but I dont know how.

I don't know why those editors didn't work for you, but perhaps you should change your strategy. Have you considered changing the backend on your page to accomodate Blogger or PostNuke?

With Blogger you can have your own free site on their server or at your own URL on yours. And they just upgraded the free service to include all sorts of cool features (spell checking, blogcasting, etc.). The only downside is that they no longer seem to be offering "post by email" which IMO would have been the ideal way to blog from the UX. It's pretty easy to integrate into your current website without affecting your overall design too much.

I haven't found any thing that would make posting to a PostNuke site super easy from the UX, but at least it's all web-based content editing, so you could do most stuff that way.

I'm going with Blogger. I think it's the cat's pajamas. I can only hope they make posting by email possible (and free).

I find it kind of a bummer that I cant write an html and upload it to my web site all that easily. Seems to me it would be a simple task. So fat it looks like just using VFSFTP+ and the standard memopad will end up to be the complete solution. into and out of the memo pad via VFSFTP+. Im still guessing that the 4k limitation will inhibit large pages, but I'd guess that may end up being a good thing. Makes them easier to load for Netfront. The only real annoyance is that I cant preview from memopad into netfront.

I'll give blogger a try, it might not be as self contained but for now it might work better.

Oh, if only there were Dreamweaver on the palm HAHA. or even just BBEdit. ;-)

oh well I guess i should get back to work...

cheers

I'm using TextAmerica.com with my phone right now. You e-mail a message with a picture attached and they post an entry on your blog. I'm sure you are looking for a true webauthoring option, and TextAmerica is pretty dumbed down. It is an option though.

Mine is at http://ocellnuri.textamerica.com

I also use Blogger, and agree that the e-mail to a post would be a great tool for the UX, but I have not had a chance to see if they include it since they moved everyone up to the Pro version.

Just staretd a blogger account looks like this will work pretty well. havent tried any of the more interesting features. the problem of associating a clie title to a file is still a rather annoying hoop to jump through.

They don't. They eliminated even the option to go "pro" and they gave everyone who was pro a free hoodie or a refund. They gave all the features of Pro to everyone EXCEPT the email feature. I can only imagine that this is because they are re-tooling their email feature, and just decided to leave the old one on line as a gimme to the former Pro users.

I couldn't be happier with Blogger what with all the new features. It's been a while since I used my account, but since I got the UX I've got an itch for blogging and restarted the account. I'm still piecing together a better system out of the tools, but I think it'll serve my simple needs for now.

WiFi Blogging App...

hi guys...

I was Googling for UX50 programs when I came across this:

http://web.vee.net/projects/azure/

Azure is a free WiFi blogging client that should be compatible with Palm OS machines. I followed the link from Andrew Diller's Clie Pen site (http://www.dillernet.com/clie), which has a screenshot of it running on the UX50.

I'll download it tonight and give it a try tomorrow.

I tested Vagablog and it works like a charm. It's very basic, since it doens't allow posting of pics and only supports editing of one blog entry at a time, but it works well for what is so far, and it's very quick to post. All you do is type and send, and the post is automatically published on any Blogger site in about 1/10th of a second.

..whoops

didn't get around to testing Azure today as promised because (...insert excuse here!...).

Will get around to it tomorrow or the weekend. Don't have much access to WiFi, but will be doing some exploring this weekend. Found a great map (for all you other Londoners) at http://www.consume.net/nodedb.php.

It's probably not 100% accurate, as I know a few unlisted hotspots that aren't on that map, but it makes for an interesting walk home from the Tube! (Found 8 on my way home yesterday).
