Thumbs up [Tip] Your UX has shortcut function build-in!! (Also support other OS5 models)

Here is the updated description and steps:

1. What it does to your UX?

Basically your Nice and Cool UX has build-in function just like PowerRUN (see Note1). In short, it places shortcuts of you programs, which you put them in card, to your RAM memory.

Note1: If you don't know what is PowerRUN and what it does, visit PalmGear http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?f...mp;prodID=15870

2. What is it good for?
As several people have discovered, those shortcuts will appear in RAM (see Note2). That means you can assign those programs to your hard buttons in Prefs panel. Also, some people have reported success in hotsyncing those programs.

Note2: Normally if you put program in card (that is in the /Palm/Launcher/ folder), they will appear in the Card category of launcher.

3. Well, I have my PowerRUN/Zlauncher/etc¡K for this ability.
Speaking of PowerRUN, it can place shortcuts in your RAM. However, if you pull your MemoryStick out of the slot, those shortcuts will still remain in RAM as if they still exist. The build-in function of UX can automatically update those shortcuts whenever you plug in or pull out your MemoryStick.

Zlauncher in this case has the same function as the build-in one. But please read on.

4. The best part of this function.
For now you only see it working for MemoryStick. However, if you use the same method in the Internal Media, you will change the way you use your UX (really!!). Those programs you put in Internal Media will remain even after HARD RESET. And you will not need any memory stick for this to work. Other usage would be putting those HUGE programs with HUGE database in Internal Media, so they don't eat all your precious RAM and are always available no matter which memory stick you are using (or use memory stick at all).

5. Still, there are always drawbacks.
You can't put anything that is larger than your available RAM. For example, if you have 7MB RAM available, you can not put a map that is 8MB in MemoryStick/Internal Media. Remember it works just like PowerRUN. It copies the programs and databases to RAM when you use it.

Although this method works for both the MemoryStick and Internal Media, Internal Media works not as well as MemoryStick. If you delete programs in Internal Media, the shortcuts will not be deleted. You have to remove them manually (see Note3).

Note3: The shortcuts have a "*" before their names when you see them in file manager. You have to uncheck the Read-only attribute before you can delete them.

6. Steps

For MemoryStick
1. Open your file manager
2. Put programs and databases in /Palm/Programs/AliasExt/ (see Note4)
3. Pull out your card and re-insert it.
4. You should see them appear in RAM now.

For Internal Media
1. Open your file manager
2. Put programs and databases in /Palm/Programs/AliasExt/ (see Note5)
3. SOFT RESET YOUR DEVICE
4. You should see them appear in RAM now.

Note4: Databases with the same creator name as the program will work this way. However, if your program has a database with different creator name (e.g. MegaCalc needs MathLib database which has a different creator name), you will have to create a folder under that directory and put all of them in the same folder.

Note5: There is another directory for Internal Media. Programs in /System/Palm/AliasExt/ will also work. Also, you can remove three build-in programs from here (ClieDemo, RemoteCamera, and PhotoEditor). Remember when you remove a program from Internal Media, you have to delete the shortcut manually.

7. That's all guys! Enjoy your UX even better from now on!

[Special Notes Section]

1. Remember to MOVE your programs to the MemoryStick/Internal Media and not just COPY them. UX will refuse to display duplicate programs.

2. Internal Media = VMS, just in case you are not sure what other people are talking about "put stuff in VMS, etc, etc."

3. [Problem][solved] Clie Viewer might not open because of the lack of Internal Media memory.

[Solution 1] Only put apps in VMS and best if only put in /System/Palm/AliasExt/

[Solution 2] In MS, create indiviual folders for each applications.

4. [Problem][solved] Flash Player will crash when exiting.

[Solution] Same solution as above.

5. Other OS5 models are supported. Just install the AliasExtension file from here:

http://c0mm0n.free.fr/alias/ (only need one file depends on your model)

and many thanks to c0mm0n for hosting!

Outstanding tip gnaihc! I did the stpes for the internal memory and it works!

Thank you very much, now I don't need to buy a launcher.

Thanks for the new post, with all the infomation listed above, with other useful applications such as PowerRUN listed, surely this would be a very useful thread.

About Avantgo, I know it can move it to MS's Launcher folder, as long as AGConnect is left in RAM & still the news content would automatically update during hotsync, but when I tried putting Avantgo in /Palm/Programs/AliasExt "internal Media" it failed to Hotsync. Any ideas?

I'm glad to see you like it. I just thought my original post was a bit too complicate and mixed with some unnecessary steps. Hope the simplified steps will be easier for people to follow.

yeah, it was a little bit confusing at the beginning but I managed to figured out what was causing the error. As you've mentioned in your new thread, you can't have duplicate application co-existing at the same time, so what I did was tried a completely fresh new application in the PALM/Programs/AliasExt & soft-reset then Voila! C'est tres bien!

Then I realize that all the previous applications that I've been trying to put in the VMS System folder were used either by launchers or already existing in RAM. Then UX refuse to show duplicates. Thanks for the informative new post! I still want to move avantgo to the system in vms, since the size is quite big, but then it seems not possible.

Since I think Imame has mentioned that UX will not create direct shortcuts to applications stored in SYSTEM, like AGConnect for example, it will look for avantgo, but when I store it in System, then even though the avantgo icon shows up, AGconnect will not be able to see it. Just thought this is something worth sharing.

Sounds interesting...
Did you try then with Netfront "modded"?

It seems it does not work too if the software already exists in ROM...

Thanks again Imame, I've tried the NetFront v1155 on System. But when I go back to the main menu, the NetFront is still v1154.
It can't have duplicates as I've mentioned above. No luck with the NetFront v1155 trying to free up RAM. But it's alright, I still have 7.6M free RAM, so what is there to worry about.

How did you manage the shortcut "by yourself"?

Wow even better ! a soft reset made the app appears in the launcher !! in my test it was warfare with only the gfx in ram ;

For "myself shortcut" i use zlauncher to browse the app in the aliasext folder and then "long tap" it to develop the zlauncher menu, and select shortut

Yeah, that's why I said Zlauncher has the same function. When you Tap n Hold an program in Zlauncher and choose move to card, you will have a chance to move it to /Palm/Programs/Zlauncher/Apps/ . Then Zlauncher will create sub folder and shortcut for you.

With the Zlauncher trick, we can now install Netfront 3 modded in SYSTEM folder... Zlauncher "forces" the shortcut creation

When you launch the shortcut, Netfront3 modded is launched successfully.
BUT, when you exit Netfront, you got an error and you have to reset... (MemoryMgr.c Line: 3675)
After the reset, Netfront3 is not in RAM anyway, so the trick is good as you don't have to have modded Netfront in RAM anymore

EDIT:
A cool thing is that with the shortcut created with Zlauncher Netfront modded is now the default launcher !
