| mac newbie question - nx70 & isync so, i just bought a powerbook (woo hoo!) and i like iCal and the address book - what would happen if i were to just use isync with my nx70 (with no palm desktop installed)? i know the mac would not be able to read/write the memory stick without the missing sync software, but i don't really care about that (i plan on getting a separate memory reader that works with memory sticks, cf, etc.). would my nx70 or powerbook explode, resulting in the loss of all my palm data? i just want my calendar, to-dos, and address book to transfer to my mac. i'm running os x 10.2.6.
i'm trying to do the pc --> mac switch and it's working well so far - i love my powerbook. if syncing my nx70 with the mac is too much of a hassle, i'll just start syncing it to my pc at work instead.
i did see the thread regarding the necessity for missing sync in this forum - again, i don't care about the ms being visible to my mac, i just want to use the mac apps and not necessarily the palm desktop.
any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks,
marianne |

| just hooked up a NZ for a friend with a powerbook and OSX: you may do it without MissingSync, over bluetooth. But you will definitevely need the Palm Desktop sw even though all calendar datas will be in ical and bring alot of patience with you... iSync is terribly slow...
I suggest you buy MissingSync, probably the best invested thirty bucks ever if you have a MAC!

#3 | | Guest | You have to have the palmdesktop installed to connect the handheld to isync, it uses the hotsync program... not the actual desktop stuff. For the whole MemStick issue ... Missing Sync allows the Memstick to be recognized in the device for iTunes and iPhoto. Using a seperate reader will allow these programs to function as normal, which it seems you are well on the way to using.
Aside from some strange isync behavior transfering to iCal, the lack of a Memo app of anykind for the Mac, and the bizarre catagories within the address book that do not sync correctly with the Palm software. It works great.
To solve all those strange things though you could just use Entourage and mimic the whole outlook experience from your PC switch and operate like normal. I believe there is a conduit specific for Mac PalmDesktop into Entourage.
No I am not bashing the Mac I own 4 of them, 3 powerbooks and 2 dual g4's, the apple included software as it stands appears to be focusing more on the bluetooth, cellphone end instead of handhelds, unless we are talking Palm Palm's specifically | |

| 3 Powerbooks and 2 Dual G4's are 5 macs, not 4.
On the memo app, Palm Desktop includes one which can be used, even while using Addressbook and iCal
I do recommend Entourage if you already use it, tho'
Sadly, the main problem here is that the Palm does not support all the information in Entourage or Addressbook or iCal, so it has to "approximate" it, which is where all the inconsistencies arise. |

| thanks for the information! i understand now that hotsync as part of the palm desktop is key to syncing my nx70 to my mac. i had thought of using entourage instead, but i'm still checking out the trial version that was included with my powerbook. i was trying, in principle, to stop supporting the microsoft empire, but i may not be able to at this rate!

| You don't need entourage nor do you have to use it. I use it at the office because I have no option.
If you don't want to use it you don't have to. You can perfectly use addressbook, mail and ical for the same purpose. |

| cant install palm desktop I cant seem to install the palm desktop on my poserbook g4. I have never installed any prior versions and when installing the new palm desktop it goes through the installation and then says that installation failed. The folder is located on the HD but when I press the hotsync button I get:
The application
hotsync
manager could not be launched because of a shared library error:
*4<hotsync
manager><hotsync manager><hotsynclib.ppc><>
Please help me here. I have a sony clie nx73v and have downloaded the palm desktop 4.1 and purchased the missing sync program, which states that I must install the palm desktop first. |

#8 | | Guest | Personally, I prefer Palm Desktop for the Mac to Entourage or even iCal. Palm Desktop is much better on the Mac side than the PC side, so if you haven't tried it with your Mac, you really should. The best advantage (although there are several) is that it preserves categories when you sync. That means that you can set up color coding in PD, and then the color coding/categories will be preserved in something like DateBk5. Though I work in a mixed environment, I *always* choose the Mac for syncing.
